Are you ready for a massive list of must-view DVD titles from the last two weeks? Good, let's go!
F. Javier Gutiérrez's apocalyptic Before the Fall (amazon), about a small town in the south of Spain that finds out they have 72 hours before a meteorite destroys the earth. Our Cali correspondent Hal got a chance to see the film and called it a "good exploration of how much we should protect innocence," and I can't wait to finally check it out.
Another film that's been around for a while, but is only now hitting DVD is Dead Air (amazon). About a douchey radio dj who has to deal with a virus outbreak, the film sounds a lot like Pontypool, but I imagine it is far more literal minded.
On the TV front we've got a couple sets worth looking at. The bloody, bestselling Afro Samurai: Complete Murder Sessions »

Director: Glenn McQuaid. Review: Adam P. Combining zombies, aliens, grave robbing, and lots of dark humor, I Sell the Dead is a bizarre and interesting gem of a film. Much like Army of Darkness, this film combines the undead with the dark ages, and sprinkles on the laughs as a nice garnish. The film opens with one of the lead characters, Willy Grimes (Larry Fessenden), being be-headed by means of a guillotine. We then see his partner in crime Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) sitting in the prison waiting for his turn to be executed. A priest, played by Ron Perlman, visits Blake to record his final thoughts before he meets his maker. The rest of the film is told through Blake’s words, as he describes the awful sort of profession he and his partner partook. He recounts everything from the first grave he robbed, to the first time the »

If you loved the adventures of 18th-century graverobbers Arthur Blake and Willie Grimes in Glenn McQuaid’s I Sell The Dead, or are just waiting for the acclaimed movie to make its DVDebut, you’ll want to pick up the comic-book adaptation that hits stores tomorrow from Image Comics. The adapatation was written by McQuaid himself, with art by Brahm Revel.
Image’s I Sell The Dead features 40 full-color pages reconting Blake and Grimes’ adventures among the living, the dead and the living dead, with an additional five pages on the art of the movie. Revel did design work on the feature as well as producer Larry Fessenden’s directorial efforts Wendigo and The Last Winter, and illustrated comics versions of those films too. See our review of I Sell The Dead, which stars Dominic Monaghan, Fessenden, Ron Perlman, Angus Scrimm and Brenda Cooney, here and the flick’s official website here. »

“I Sell the Dead” marks the debut outing for writer director Glenn McQuaid, and boasts a great offbeat cast, including Dominic Monaghan of “Lord of the Rings” fame, cult director Larry Fessenden (“Habit”, “The Last Winter”), Angus Schrimm (“Phantasm”) and “Hellboy” himself, Ron Perlman. Although the term label ‘comedy horror’ is quite possibly enough to terrify most genre fans in the worst way, the film is one of the very few examples of the form to strike the tricky balance between laughs and scares, mainly since McQuaid puts a great deal of effort into lovingly recreating the atmosphere of the old Hammer Horror classics, tinged with modern touches. The results are highly entertaining, and the film has rightly been a hit at various events during a successful tour, winning Best Independent Feature at Toronto’s After Dark Film Festival. It now arrives on region 2 DVD via Anchor Bay, complete with commentary from McQaid, »

Can I get all the Edmonton readers in the house to say 'yeeaah!' *crickets*
Ah well, I know there are a few of you out there and to the rest of you, pay attention because the DEDfest boys are once again putting their little prairie town on the map.
The full list of sick flicks for Edmonton's premier horror festival, DEDfest, have just been confirmed and topping the list is the new one by he-who-shall- not-be-named, the man who defies the critics (and even punches a few) – Uwe Boll. His new film, the bloody revenge fantasy Rampage (review), is one of three new films getting Canadian premiers at the event. The others two are British horrcom, Lesbian Vampire Killers and the Thai slasher film Macabre (review)
Other notable additions to the festival include the buddy-buddy grave robbers-vs-the undead comedy I Sell the Dead (review), Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl »

On the Irish DVD front, look for the acclaimed indy horror flick “I Sell the Dead.” Written and directed by Dubliner Glenn McQuaid and starring Ron Perlman and Dominic Monaghan, the film played in art houses over the summer and earned impressive reviews. On the Hollywood DVD front, Irish actor Michael Fassbender was among the stars of Quentin Tarantino’s kill-Nazis film “Inglourious Basterds.” (“Centurion” and “Jonah Hex” are two of Fassbender’s upcoming projects.) British actor Steve Coogan (whose parents were Irish immigrants) has been in films such as “Tropic Thunder” and the “Night at the Museum” films. But he became famous for his work on the BBC, which has just released a 14-disc set of Coogan sketches, including his famous creations “Alan Partridge” and “Tony Ferrino.” Finally, the new TV season will see the return of Irish-American small-screen veterans Ed O’Neill and Chris O’Donnell. Release Date: Aug. 7Director/Writer: Glenn McQuaidStarring: Dominic Monaghan, Ron Perlman, Larry FessendenCinematographer: Richard LopezStudio/Run Time: IFC, 85 mins.
I Sell the Dead arrives lovingly crafted for a small but loyal brand of moviegoers, the kind who best appreciate their comedy blackened to a crisp—with a few corpses thrown in for good measure. The charmingly no-budget feature debut of Glenn McQuaid, the movie follows a 19th-century grave robber (Lost’s Dominic Monaghan) as he awaits the guillotine and recounts his life story to a priest (played by Ron Perlman, in case there was any doubt what kind of movie this is). Mist-shrouded and whiskey-soaked tales of the dead and undead follow with cheerful gallows humor and estimable makeup effects by rising genre stars Pete Gerner and Brian Spears. »

Back in June we reported on the upcoming slate for Glass Eye Pix, the production company backed by Larry Fessenden which is behind such greats as The Last Winter, Automatons, and I Sell the Dead. One of those films was Bitter Feast, a horror comedy about a chef who takes revenge on one of his critics.. and it stars Food Network and Iron Chef America favorite Mario Batali (whos also my personal fave, go Mario!). What more is there to say? This teaser is a clear definition of the word "tease".

As an Irishman who’s never set foot in Ireland, I’m sort of obsessed with all things Irish. So I was ecstatic to find out I Sell The Dead was written and directed a real, live Irishman, from Ireland, with the accent, the pale (I call it “royal”) complexion, and the Guinness addiction—Glenn McQuaid. Let the stalking begin!
The press has had a field day with McQuaid’s film (including Fangoria; you can watch a nice “Making of…” feaurette and read a “Director’s Statement” here) McQuaid and the film are basically omnipresent in the horror and mainstream press at the moment, which is awesome…
…unless you pride yourself on getting info out of your interview subjects that hasn’t been printed a billion times before. Damn you and your success, McQuaid!
So I decided to let sleeping zombies lie and came up with a random series of »

In salute to the recently announced news that Larry Fessenden would be directing the upcoming remake of Del Toro’s The Orphanage, I present a view into the file of Larry’s 2001 film Wendigo. And also, in honor of Larry’s devotion to the environment, just as Larry’s press release was printed on both sides of the paper, this blog will be printed on both sides of the internet.
Along with the man-crush some of the young filmmakers around the Fangoria office have for him, Larry comes with a certain Irish bar fighting-charm. This genuinely nice guy is not only a great director but one hell of a producer, as such films as House Of Devil and I Sell The Dead prove. My biggest hope emanating from this Fangoria file was that the Wendigo Model Kit, mentioned in a printed email, actually came to be. (Check it out here »

Once again its time to dip a (icy) toe in the murky waters of U.S independent horror with something we stumbled on (whilst ready about the release of Glenn McQuaid’s superb “I Sell The Dead”), the upcoming creature feature, Hypothermia. Directed by ‘Automatons,’ ‘Satan Hates You’ helmer James Felix McKenney, Hypothermias plot centres around two families in Maine, who go on an ice fishing trip and it looks like they catch more than they bargained for. More as we get it. »

While talking with Fangoria Radio recently to promote his new film I Sell The Dead, Hellboy star Ron Perlman gave hosts Debbie Rochon and Tony Timpone an update on the long-gestating Bubba Nosferatu project. In the Bubba Ho-tep (pictured left) sequel/prequel, Perlman will don the sequined Elvis suit previously donned by Bruce Campbell in the 2004 sleeper written and directed by Phantasm guru Don Coscarelli, who encores on the follow-up.
“Well, I have this window that’s about to open,” Perlman revealed. “I’ll be done shooting [his cable series] Sons Of Anarchy in September, and we’re hoping to get into production on Bubba in my hiatus between seasons two and three. I just spoke to [actor] Paul Giamatti [set to play Elvis’ manager, Colonel Tom Parker] and Don Coscarelli this morning, and we’re just moving the ball down the field, trying to get her done.”
Perlman will likely reteam with his I Sell The Dead co-star Angus Scrimm in »
