Aubrey, innocence, first place, etc. While the red represents Dakota, second place, blood, etc. When you see the blue tools that the killer uses, and the blue rose, and everything, it represents Aubrey, and everything she's going through, where for most of the movie we see red with Dakota, and the stripper scenes and what not.
Aubrey and Dakota are twins separated at birth. When Aubrey is kidnapped and tortured, Dakota suffers the same wounds by means of stigmata. She goes to Aubrey's hometown because her mother received money from someone there and she's looking for help. When she's found, everyone assumes that she's Aubrey because nobody is aware that she has a long-lost twin. Only Aubrey's "father," the one who took Aubrey and separated the sisters at birth, knows the truth and he doesn't want to say anything for fear of tearing apart the family he has "created." Everyone assumes "Aubrey's" lost her memory and has taken on an alter ego, but truthfully, she is who she says she is: Dakota. At the end, Dakota finds where Aubrey is buried, digs her up, and they are finally reunited. One theory is that everything after Aubrey is tortured takes place within Aubrey's mind - she imagines that the 'Dakota' character from her story is her sister and eventually saves her - as a way to cope with the horrendous things happening to her.The DVD has an alternate ending which shows Lohan as a different character - neither Aubrey nor Dakota - sitting at her laptop writing a story. The character is wearing a purple shirt which is a combination of the movies signature colours (Aubrey/Blue and Dakota/Red) which would indicate that the entire movie was a story written by this character.
