Shout! Factory gave Fango the scoop that it will release a special-edition DVD of the 1977 nature-run-amok cult favorite Kingdom Of The Spiders next year. The company also sent along final details on its disc of the original Stepfather, which we first told you about here.
Currently targeted for a January 19, 2010 street date, Kingdom will be presented with “a new anamorphic widescreen transfer, plus a slew of extras,” according to our source. Directed by John “Bud” Cardos, the movie stars William Shatner and The Candy Snatchers’ Tiffany Bolling as a rancher and entomologist battling an invasion of killer tarantulas in a Southwestern town. A couple of years ago, it was announced that Richard Stanley (pictured), director of Hardware (coming soon on DVD, as we first reported here) and Dust Devil, was planning to make his big-screen comeback with an apocalyptic thriller called Vacation, to star Bruce Campbell. Then the news well on that one went dry—but Fango hears that the project is back on track again, with a new star.
Tom Welling, who plays Clark Kent/Superman on TV’s Smallville and also starred in the remake of The Fog, is said to be taking over for Campbell in the story of a coke-addicted banker who travels with his stripper girlfriend to a seedy Middle Eastern resort. Their own personal problems soon pale before the disaster that strikes in the form of freak solar storms that eradicate all means of communication, leaving them stranded in an extremely hostile environment.
