Director Steve Barker is in pre-production on Outpost II: Black Sun , a sequel to the 2008 UK import Outpost starring Ray Stevenson. A lot of good ideas in that one. Barker is reuniting with screenwriter Rae Brunton again for more undead Nazi mayhem. Courtesy of Black Camel Pictures, here's a preview of what's to come via some conceptual artwork and a synopsis. And from the look of it, the sequel is going to be larger in scale.

Ray Stevenson made his mark playing Titus Pullo in the incredible Rome series, but he also made a splash earlier this year playing the title character of Frank Castle in Punisher: War Zone. Unfortunately the film was a bit of a disaster critically and at the box office but he was perfectly cast and did his job right.
Stevenson has also played some cool characters in King Arthur and Outpost among many others, but the best is yet to come as we’ll be seeing a lot more of the growing star in the next few years with him being cast and working on a few big films including a role in the Denzel Washington starrer, The Book of Eli. For the Rome fans out there, a feature film based after the series is also in development so we can expect to see Titus Pullo back in action yet again.

Is it fair to compare a young, second time film maker with one of cinema's all time greats? No, of course it's not. But if Thomas Ikimi's ultra low budget debut Limbo wasn't enough to convince you that he has aspersions towards making the same sort of high concept thrillers that made Hitchcock famous, well, a quartet of concept posters for his sophomore effort are here to make that point clear. Titled Legacy, the film stars The Wire's Idris Elba in the lead and the just-released poster art has that classic Saul Bass influence all over it.
Here's the press release that went out went we first covered the film back in May:

A few days ago Alcon Entertainment released a poster for their upcoming film The Book of Eli and now they have made public a second poster.
You can click on the image to the left to see the full version.
Directed by the Hughes Brothers (Menace II Society) and starring two of the greatest actors that have ever lived in Denzel Washington (American Gangster) and Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight), The Book of Eli is a film I’ve been anticipating since pre-production.
The film’s premise is outlined as:
In a post-apocalyptic world, a lone hero, Eli (Denzel Washington), guards the Book of Eli, which provides knowledge that could redeem society. The despot (Gary Oldman) of a small, makeshift town plans to take possession of the book.
Co-starring are: Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), Michael Gambon (Layer Cake), Jennifer Beals (Flashdance), Ray Stevenson (Outpost), and Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Ao reported on the sequel to Outpost, which had great production design but a weak script, back in April, and now, Styd has released some plot details. Steve Barker will again be directing and has again co-wrote the script with Rae Brunton. I'm really not excited, but here it is:

Mixed opinions welcomed Outpost , the UK action-horror flick starring Ray Stevenson, when it arrived in the U.S. early last year. Ambitious, it certainly was. But some felt it dragged (this writer included).
Director Steve Barker is getting back behind the camera for Outpost II: Black Sun . Described as 28 Weeks Later meets Cloverfield and Aliens , the plot goes like this:
The year is 1945, the closing stages of WW2, and a German scientist by the name of Klausener is working on a frightening new technology the power to create an immortal Nazi army.
Flash forward to present day, and a Nato task force is hurriedly deployed to Eastern Europe, where a sinister enemy appears to be mercilessly killing everything in its path. But this is no ordinary foe.

The Wire’s Idris Elba Stars In Thomas Ikimi’s Legacy

We first became aware of writer-director Thomas Ikimi a couple years back when fueled by passion, credit cards and stacks of raw talent he burst on to the scene with Limbo, a purely independent psychological thriller that marked Ikimi as a fairly significant new talent to keep an eye on and prompted me to wonder openly just what the man would be capable if he had access to a seasoned crew and stable of experienced actors. Well, we’re about to find out since Ikimi is now in principal photography on his new feature, Legacy, which stars and is executive produced by The Wire‘s Idris Elba who is quickly carving out a niche for himself as one of the most talented and reliable character players going.

The 2008 British zombie film "Outpost" has a sequel on the way.
Writers Steve Barker and Rae Brunton will write the film, with Barker directing once again. It's title will be "Outpost II: Black Sun".
The first film was produced by Scottish couple Arabella Croft and Kieran Parker and their production company Black Camel Pictures.
They mortgaged their Glasgow home in order to raise £200,000 to finance production. The script is by Rae Brunton, based on Parker's original concept, which he described as "Platoon meets The Sixth Sense".

I count myself as a big fan of 2007’s Nazi zombie shocker Outpost. Not only did the film feature a surprisingly textured script and strong work from a roster of character players including recent big-screen Punisher and Rome star Ray Stevenson, there was a hefty dose of fun faux-science ladled into its tale of a team of mercenaries tasked with locating a long-shuttered WWII-era bunker and retrieving a mysterious device housed within (suffice to say, there are zombies involved). Original Outpost producer Kieran Parker dropped us a line to let us know they are prepping a sequel, Outpost II: Black Sun, through Black Camel Pictures and that said sequel is up for grabs at this year’s Cannes Festival. We now offer a peek at an early poster. Can never have enough Nazi zombie pics in my book. As more details emerge, we’ll try and keep you posted!

Dying for some interesting zombie movie news? Yeah, we figured you were. We've just learned that writers Kieran Parker, Rae Brunton and Steve Barker are currently writing the sequel to 2007’s Outpost.
I wasn't under the impression that the first film did well enough to warrant a sequel, but there you go. I liked the first film's atmosphere but found it rather dull in parts. Here's hoping the second one will be a more solid affair. It's currently listed with a winter 2009 date, but that may actually be when they hope to start filming. Either way we'll keep you posted.
Anyone out there an Outpost fan?

Hesseman Signs Up for Zombie's Halloween 2

Rob Zombie dropped the news today that Howard Hesseman has signed up with him for his upcoming Halloween 2. Zombie made the revelation through his Myspace blog (the modern man's press release medium), and revealed that Hesseman would be playing one Uncle Meat, owner of Uncle Meat's Java Hole.
Hesseman joins up with recently announced actors Dayton Callie (Deadwood) and Richard Brake (Perkins’ 14, Doom, Outpost) in Zombie's second installment of the Halloween reboot.
I know, I know, I cringe a little too. I mean, not about Hesseman; he's a great enough guy. The title of his character even sounds funny, and funny is good. It's just a little difficult to feel that excited about this project, given the huge fallout the first film encountered. It feels about as wise to make another Halloween film as it does for us to invade Iraq a third time. Will we ever learn?

Brake & Callie Join Halloween 2

Is it just me or is the only thing MySpace is good for anymore is updates on Rob Zombie’s Halloween sequel? That’s sure how it feels to me as of late, but then I’m bitter so what do I know?
Zombie dropped the news today that both Dayton Callie (“Deadwood”) and Richard Brake (Perkins’ 14, Doom, Outpost) have joined the Halloween 2 cast, the former as a coroner and the latter, in Zombie’s oh-so-eloquent phrasing, as a “corpse fucking obsessed coroner's assistant.”
It’s clear Zombie’s taking the high road with this sequel, isn’t it? Sure. Expect more casting news soon, and I’m sure he’ll start full-on bloging about the film any day now as the production’s start date looms. Make sure you read our recent interview with Brake for more insight into this very cool character actor!

He also appeared in Batman Begins as Joe Chill, the man responsible for the death of Bruce Wayne's parents.
