Well it's been an interesting week for screenwriting news. The 2009 Black List [1] was just unveiled today, which is the list of top unproduced screenplays currently floating around Hollywood. This "underground" compilation of rankings was started by Universal exec Franklin Leonard a few years ago in order to draw attention to some of the great scripts that deserve a chance at getting made into movies. (Strangely, some of the top picks this year are already currently in production, so I'm not sure how they can still be considered "unproduced".) This comes hot on the heels of a recent blog post [2] from screenwriter John August (Charlie's Angels, Big Fish, The Nines) in which he criticizes script review websites such as ScriptShadow [3], who post opinions on leaked screenplays before the movies are ever produced. August believes that these sites hurt screenwriters more than they help, because they spoil plot elements, pass judgment on …

Splendid news regarding the upcoming 'Tekken' movie adaptation, unless you’re a fan of the video game series who doesn’t speak German.
According to Variety, Splendid Film has acquired the rights to 'Tekken', along with a number of other fantasy and horror movies, for distribution in the German-speaking territories. The other films include Marcus Nispel’s upcoming Conan; the horror-thriller The Collector, helmed by Marcus Dunstan; and Mr. Nobody, a supernatural thriller starring Val Kilmer.
Dwight Little’s Tekken was the film that really grabbed my attention, since I recall the announcement of it roughly two years ago. It premiered at the American Film Market last month, but its current U.S. distributors — The Weinstein Company, Summit Entertainment, and Crystal Sky Pictures — have remained relatively quiet. Unfortunately, the combination of only a vague U.S. 2010 release date, along with the announcement of an overseas distributor …

While I’m not the biggest fan of basketball or the NBA, it was with mild interest that I watched Spike Lee’s latest ode to the game he loves in Kobe Doin’ Work.
Focusing on L.A. Lakers star Kobe Bryant, Lee centers this documentary around one pivotal game against the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals in the ‘07/’08 season. Would the short film appeal only to fans of the game or can Lee create something which speaks beyond the hoops? The answer is a resounding “meh.”
For the first three quarters of the game, Lee has microphones and an absurd amount of cameras around the star that captures everything from on-the-bench talks, conversations with teammates, coaching staff and more. Kobe Doin’ Work sparks interest from a voyeuristic standpoint, which, come on, is pretty easy to do, but where this video shines is through Bryant’s narration. …

Everyone likes Dexter, right? Well, imagine if Dexter was a hot brunette who likes how she looks in fishnet tops. Better right? If you said yes, then we have a project for you. Though the concept has been floating around since 2006, when the creators discussed plans at the San Diego Comic Con, a film adaptation of the comic Hack/Slash has not yet come to fruition, largely thanks to screenwriter Justin Marks, who is best known as the guy who wrote the epic shit storm that was Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. With Frederik Bond replacing Todd Lincoln as director back in July, and the idea of a girl in skimpy clothes continuing to appeal, it was only a matter of finding a new writer before the project could get new legs. Now they have. Stephen Susco, according to Bloody Disgusting, has been hired to pen the comic adaptation …

This weekend's edition of "Saturday Night Live" didn't live up to the highs of the previous week (when Taylor Swift reigned supreme over just about every aspect of the show), but it still provided a handful of laughs. Host January Jones (of the critically-acclaimed television drama "Mad Men") looked a little lost at times but still turned in some memorable moments. But most of the notable highlights came courtesy of musical guests the Black Eyed Peas. The group turned in a trio of excellent performances and managed to get the normally staid "SNL" audience to make a little noise and bang around a bit.
The quartet also delivered on the comedy front. In one of the episode's first sketches, the Peas appeared as the guests on "Today," hosted by Kathy Lee Gifford (played by Kristen Wiig) and Hoda Kotb (played by newcomer Jenny Slate). During the sketch, Wiig's Gifford starts singing, …

The potential film version of the comic book Hack/Slash has been making news for over a year now. Two reasons. One, it's classic fanbait: hot girl plus skimpy clothes plus violence. And two, it was originally handed to screenwriter Justin Marks, the guy who became blog fodder for having a bunch of high-profile writing gigs with no produced credits. Then the Marks-penned Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li came out, and suddenly we weren't writing about Marks nearly as often. As is so often the case, the lousiness of Street Fighter may or may not actually have anything to do with the Marks script, but with nothing else bearing his name it's harder to give him the benefit of the doubt. After being announced, Hack/Slash was passed from director Todd Lincoln to Fredrik Bond. Now there's a report that a new screenwriter is on board, as well. In retrospect, …

Jake Gyllenhaal puts on his sexy face in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Photo: Walt Disney Pictures I'm not much of a gamer, and that may in fact be an understatement considering in the last few years the only games I have played and finished are "Gears of War," "Burnout," "Uncharted," "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare" and just a couple of days ago "Uncharted 2." I don't know where that places me in the gamer revolution, but considering that's about 6 years of gaming outside of playing a little "Tiger Woods," "NBA Street" and "Hot Shots Golf" I would say I am on the outside looking in. However, I'd like to think I know enough to at least open up a discussion concerning the growing trend of adapting video games into feature films, primarily based on the recently released trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, a film …

I, like a lot of people, never bothered to watch Legend of the Seeker during its first season run despite rampant curiosity. With its release on DVD, viewers can catch up on what they missed and get set for the second season which debuts next month. Be warned, if you watch the first season, you will set the DVR for the second one. Prioritize now.
Legend of the Seeker is a syndicated fantasy series based on The Sword of Truth novels from author Terry Goodkind. It follows the journey of a young guide named Richard (Craig Horner), mysterious woman named Kahlan (Bridget Regan), a wizard named Zeddicus Zu’l Zorander (Bruce Spence) who must stop the evil Darken rahl (Craig Parker) from unleashing an ancient power.
Horror maestro and Spider-Man director Sam Raimi became interested in adapting Goodkind’s novels to screen after his partner and producer Joshua Donen asked him to read the books. …

Say what you will about the “Twilight” explosion of the last year – and everybody seems to have an opinion on whether the phenomenon is awesome or annoying – but even the haters should have a hard time complaining about how many of the franchise’s stars are using their newfound power to help young filmmakers. Jackson Rathbone has been hard at work on flicks like “Girlfriend,” Robert Pattinson has been able to bring a wider audience to quirky indies like “Little Ashes” and "How to Be,” and now comes the latest boost from Justin Chon.
“Check out this short film i did with a friend from USC,” Justin Tweeted Wednesday night, posting a link to a vimeo page with an impressive 20-minute-long film called “Turbo.” Also on the page is the trailer, both of which were posted by the film’s director Jarrett Lee Conaway.
In the flick, Chon plays Hugo Park, …

"Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" actress Kat Dennings isn't the first name you'd associate with comic book movies, but when we had the chance to sit down with her during the Toronto International Film Festival, she was quick to name-drop an adaptation she'd like to bring to the big screen.
In town to discuss her upcoming, pseudo-superhero movie "Defendor" with Woody Harrelson, Dennings called out action-horror series "Hack/Slash" when asked if there were any books she'd like to play a role in adapting.
"You know who's a cool girl comic book thing?" said Dennings. "Hack/Slash!"
Last we heard from the "Hack/Slash" front, commercial director Fredrik Bond had taken over directing duties on the film, replacing Todd Lincoln. The Devil's Due Publishing series is currently in development with Rogue Pictures, the Relativity Media subsidiary responsible for "Shaun of the Dead" and "Doomsday."
"Hack/Slash" stars Cassie Hack, a …

As if the dirge accompanying this summer's blockbusters wasn't enough a whole slew of sweet-tooth for-the-dollars films were mentioned in the online pages of Variety today in three separate stories announcing sequels, reboots and more films based on toys. First comes word Universal Pictures has made a deal with Mattel to build a live action film around, Barbie, its signature toy line. Producer Laurence Mark said the next step will be to canvas writers and decide a creative take for a family-friendly movie based on the popular doll. Perhaps I should go review the recently released Barbie and the Three Musketeers for future reference. I wonder if Aqua will be called in for the title track.
Next comes news that Sony has stepped in where Warner Bros. stepped out and is finalizing a deal to produce a bigscreen adaptation of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, the popular action …

I'm being mocked in the MTV newsroom for my excitement over this news, but I don't care. He-Man is a badass, and not because his alter-ego -- Prince Adam -- is named like my name. That's not the only reason anyway. No. He-Man is a badass because he rides a Battle Cat and talks to his magical sword and still wins the day every time. He was also brought to life by Dolph Lundgren in the first movie adaptation of the Mattel toy line, and you just don't mess with that man.
Don't count on Lundgren coming back for the long-gestating second attempt at an adaptation, which has finally found a home with Sony, according to a report in Variety. Sony is partnered with Escape Artists, with the project being led by producers Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch, who intend to start "from scratch."

Check out the new pics of Shia Labeouf, Frank Langella and director Oliver Stone from the upcoming Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps.
Taken during filming in Central Park, we see a casual Langella while Labeouf, clad in a rather swishy jacket, looks interested in the advice dispensed by bearded dog walker.
Labeouf’s character Jacob: So, that’s how I keep Spot from peeing on my carpet?
Langella’s character Lewis: Heavens no. “Spot” is an analogy for money. Money that fails to surrender to the nightly emissions of slumber.
Jacob: F*ck. I’m so confused about this money and its avoideance of naps. I wish there was some kindly ’80s icon that could teach me the ways of “Spot.”
The sequel to the 1987 film Wall Street, Wall Street 2 also stars Michael Douglas returning as Gordon Gekko and Susan Surandon returning to play a mom.

Warner Bros. and Mattel have announced they are no longer collaborating on Masters of the Universe, a live-action reinvention of the signature Mattel toy line that WB and producer Joel Silver have been developing since 2007. The trades say Mattel and WB didn't see eye to eye over the direction of the project and made a mutual decision to let the option lapse this month. The story revolves around He-Man, a prince who becomes a warrior battling the evil Skeletor for control of his magical homeland. Evan Daugherty penned the latest draft of the script, which was titled Grayskull. Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li) also wrote a draft. The film WB was developing was said to be a gritty fantasy that reimagines Adam as a soldier who sets off to find his destiny, happening upon the magical world of Eternia. Mattel will take back the property and set it up elsewhere. …

Former Lana Lang Kristen Kreuk will be heading over to NBC to play a love interest for Chuck on the series of the same name. This is right on the heels of the announcement that Brandon Routh will be playing a romantic interest for Sarah. To put it in perspective, Chuck will be dating Lana Lang and Sarah will be dating Superman.
Hopefully, her character Hannah will be a little less whiny than Lana (the two names rhyme. Coincidence?). I did like when Lana become more self-confident and assertive this past season of Smallvile. It's a pity that only lasted for about an episode and a half. Whatever happens, her Chuck episodes will undoubtedly get more viewers than Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
Has anybody else noticed that all these geek-appeal shows have been getting guest stars that are specifically known to geeks? It's like they don't even want …

Chuck's third season is going to be just super.
Yes, that was a pun. NBC's action comedy cast Brandon Routh as a love interest for Sarah, but they couldn't stop there. Chuck's writers are adding another alumnus of the Superman universe to the triangle, making a love rhombus.
I'm talking about Kristen Kreuk, formerly of Smallville, who has been cast as Hannah, Entertainment Weekly reports. Hannah will be the fourth corner of the rhombus, and will obviously be competing with Sarah for Chuck's heart. Chuck meets Hannah on a flight to Paris, and the two develop feelings for her, which only intensify when Hannah begins working at Buy More.
Kreuk, fresh from her role as the titular character in Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, will appear for "multiple episodes" during Chuck's third season. …

Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li – 3 Disc Special Edition
Directed by: Andrzej Bartkowiak
Cast: Kristin Kreuk, Neal McDonough, Chris Klein, Moon Bloodgood, Michael Clarke Duncan
Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins
Rating: PG-13
Plot: A young woman raised on martial arts named Chun-Li (Kreuk) wants vengeance against super villain Bison (McDonough). At the same time, Bison is being pursued by two cops, Nash and Det. Maya Sunee (Klein and Bloodgood).
Who’s It For? Here is the movie that can match the intellect of it’s primary audience of thirteen year old boys. They will be oblivious to the awful acting, editing, dialogue, and will eat up whatever portions of action Chun-Li has to offer.
Movie:
Street Fighter kicks off with a waltz by Frederic Chopin, which is right about where any shred of Chun-Li’s gracefulness stops dead in its tracks. Acted and directed by a bunch clowns, this …

Although it took in $55.2 million at the weekend box-office, the news for Warner Bros.' Watchmen wasn't all that good. After reports came in of heavy pre-opening ticket sales on Internet sites, a theater count of 3,611 and a screen count of about 7,500, analysts had expected it to come close to or even exceed the $71-million opening gross for the previous Zach Snyder fantasy thriller 300. Moreover, sales fell off precipitously on Saturday and Sunday (the movie took in almost half its gross on Friday, including midnight screenings), and some pundits saw the result as an indication that the movie's appeal was limited to young adults who were fans of the graphic novel on which it was based. (Warner Bros. said that 65 percent of the audience was male and 54 percent older than 25.) They predicted that the movie, which some said had cost as much as $200 million to produce, would take a big tumble next weekend. Actually, the biggest tumble of the year already took place over the weekend as Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience dropped 71 percent in its second week to $2.8 million. Taking nearly as big a hit was Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, which dropped 69 percent in its second week to $1.5 million, bringing its total to a measly $7.3 million. On the other hand, Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail and Taken each showed impressive legs, with Madea moving up to second place with $8.5 million in its third week and Taken pulling in $7.3 million in its sixth week. Meanwhile, total box office revenue for the year has already approached $2 billion. It now stands at $1.929 billion, up 16.61 percent from last year at this time, according to Media by Numbers. Attendance is up 14.85 percent.
The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. Watchmen, Warner Bros, $55,214,334, (New); 2. Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail, Lionsgate, $8,532,412, 3 Wks. ($76,237,739); 3. Taken, Fox, $7,334,814, 6 Wks. ($117,933,922); 4. Slumdog Millionaire, Fox Searchlight, $6,808,383, 17 Wks. ($125,324,813); 5. Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Sony/Columbia, $4,146,316, 8 Wks. ($133,588,995); 6. He's Just Not That into You, Warner Bros., $4,017,326, 5 Wks. ($84,644,583); 7.
