- When Alfonso is not doing well in school, Dex thinks he is spending too much time on his dancing. And when Alfonso's grades don't improve, Dex forbids from entering a dance competition. But Bruce Jenner who is trying out some exercise equipment Edward has developed, thinks he knows what Alfonso's problem is.—rcs0411@yahoo.com
- Rick and Alfonso are studying in Rick's room, but while Rick is working on a history paper, Alfonso is busying himself with activities other than studying. Alfonso says he's too distracted to study, knowing that Bruce Jenner is dropping by. Furthermore, he says, he's more focused on the upcoming talent contest rather than a book report he's supposed to write.
Meanwhile, Edward sets up some exercise equipment in the living room to show Jenner when he shows up. Dexter enters, and Edward gets him to briefly jump on a mini-trampoline before putting on some shoes with hooks on the bottom that enable him to hang upside-down from another set of exercise equipment he has. Before Dexter can help Edward come down, however, they hear loud music coming from upstairs. Dexter runs upstairs, leaving Edward hanging upside-down.
Seeing Alfonso dancing, Dexter demands to know why his nephew isn't studying, citing his teacher's comments about him not paying attention in class, doing homework, or reading the assigned material. Alfonso says he needed a break and wanted to show Rick his moves for the talent competition. Dexter tells Alfonso to study, saying he can take a break when Jenner gets there. When they hear Jenner arriving, however, the boys race downstairs.
When Jenner enters, he helps Edward down from the equipment. Kate introduces Jenner to Dexter. Rick and Alfonso introduce themselves. Alfonso compliments Jenner on his performance during the 1967 Olympics. Jenner corrects him to 1976. Alfonso swears he read it as "67." The adults leave for dinner, but Dexter, who is the last to leave, tells Alfonso that if he doesn't receive a copy of his report the next morning, he won't be able to participate in the talent contest.
Alone, Alfonso asks Rick if he wants to play a video game. Rick asks Alfonso about his book report. Alfonso says he'll finish it. Rick offers to help Alfonso with his report, but Alfonso becomes defensive, accuses Rick of calling him stupid, and runs out.
Later, after Edward returns from dinner, he finds his son studying in his room alone. He asks what happened to Alfonso, and Rick says that Alfonso went home alone. Edward yells out the window to Dexter downstairs, saying that Alfonso went home. Rick tosses Dexter Alfonso's book. Edward eagerly tells his son that Jenner was interested in the exercise equipment, and if he likes what he sees, he'll agree to have his name put on the equipment. Rick doesn't share his dad's enthusiasm, saying he's bothered by Alfonso's reaction earlier that night. He says he told Alfonso he was smart, but Alfonso got angry and stormed out. Edward says that Dexter has been riding Alfonso hard to do well academically, and that Alfonso might be trying to become more independent.
The next day, as Rick and Alfonso get ready to leave for school, Dexter asks Alfonso to see his report. Dexter reads the report, but when he sees several errors in Alfonso's report, he berates his nephew and forbids him from entering the talent contest. Frustrated, Alfonso says he did his best, but he couldn't even read the book, as the letters would get mixed up when he'd try. Saying he's stupid, Alfonso says all he can do is dance, and runs upstairs. Rick follows him.
Having come in from testing the exercise equipment outside near the end of Alfonso's outburst, Jenner asks to see Alfonso's report. He asks Dexter if Alfonso has been tested for a learning disability, saying he can't tell for sure, but he thinks Alfonso may have dyslexia -- where he sees things backwards. Dexter despairs, saying that if Alfonso can't read, he won't amount to anything. Jenner reveals that dyslexia can be managed with effort and hard work, saying he's dyslexic himself.
The boys come downstairs, but before they head out the door to go to school, Dexter calls his nephew back, saying that Jenner thinks he may have a learning disability. Alfonso asks if that means something's wrong with his brain. Jenner says that his brain is fine, but somewhere along the way he's mixing up letters and numbers. Jenner tells Alfonso has the same problem, and names several other historical figures who've had it -- Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, and Hans Christian Andersen.
Rick asks how the condition can be corrected. Jenner says Alfonso will need to get extra help, but he'll have to work hard at it. He won't get the encouragement he would get during the talent competition, so he'll have to get the motivation to continue from within. Alfonso says that if dyslexia is good for Jenner, it's good for him. Dexter tells Alfonso he can enter the talent competition after all and leaves with the boys, while Jenner sits down with Kate and Edward to work out the paperwork.
