War correspondent turned screenwriter Mark Boal has re-team with his “Hurt Locker” director, the ridiculously hot Kathryn Bigelow for a new movie: “Triple Frontier”. Variety says the crime film will be set in the notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, where the Igazu and Parana rivers converge to form the titular “Triple Frontier”, an area that is difficult to monitor and thus has become a haven for organized crime and other characters of ill-intentions. It’s also the setting for “Elite Squad” director Jose Padilha’s upcoming terrorism movie “A Willing Patriot”.
After working on the Iraq War-set “Hurt Locker” together, Boal and Bigelow re-teamed to pitch the story for “Triple Frontier” to the boys at Atlas Entertainment. The company’s Charles Roven, Alex Gartner and Steve Alexander will produce the movie, one of many that Atlas has gotten their hands on in recent months, including “Season of

Lionsgate has nabbed director Jose Padilha and writer Braulio Mantovani to develop a live action adaptation of “Agent in Place,” an upcoming video game from Union Entertainment. Variety describes the project as “a character-driven action thriller” based on the until-now-unannounced game from Flint Dille, who has previous game writing credits on “Dead to Rights” and Starbreeze Entertainment’s excellent “The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay,” itself a spin-off from David Twohy’s “Riddick” films.
Union Entertainment, the company that previously brought comic book publisher Top Cow Productions’ “The Darkness” to Starbreeze for an Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 game, is working with Dille on “Agent.” Mantovani will produce a script based on Dille’s concept while Padilha finishes up with his current commitment to “The Sigma Protocol,” an adaptation of the same-titled Robert Ludlum novel. Padilha and Mantovani also previously worked together on “The Elite Squad,” an action/thriller set in Brazil.

Jose Padilha hasn't even starting lensing his first English language film and yet he has managed to sign up for four projects including today's mention. Attached to direct A Willing Patriot for Warner Bros., Marching Powder for Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment and poised to officially make his debut with Universal Pictures' The Sigma Protocol later in the year, we can now add a video game feature to the possible mix as he and his writing partner Braulio Mantovani have struck a deal with Lionsgate to adapt Agent in Place. The character-driven action thriller based on the game by Flint Dille and developed with Union Entertainment will be produced by Lionsgate production prexy Alli Shearmur and Union Entertainment prexy Richard Leibowitz.

- Universal have been keen on making this potential moneymaker for some time now. Grabbing the rights as early as 05', they eventually had Venezuelan filmmaker Jonathan Jakubowicz on board after his international success of Secuestro express. The title would see practically no theater play domestically, but caught the eye of the Universal folks because it should the promise of a director who could direct a thriller. Fast-forward a couple of year later, and now Uni is in final negotiations with a Brazilian filmmaker in Jose Padilha.
Padilha had a bit more luck with his Berlin International Film Festival winning Elite Squad -- Hollywood came rushing in fairly quickly -- WB threw A Willing Patriot at him and Plan B wants him on board for a project titled Marching Powder. If Padilha chooses to go with a Robert Ludlum book to film project first, he almost assures himself a fair chance at a bright future.
