Maybe writer Roy Clarke knew that actor Brian Wilde was planning to leave and realised that steps were needed to expand the cast. We have seen Wesley return, bigger parts for Ivy, Wally and Nora in recent times. In this episode we are introduced to Howard, Pearl and Marina, characters that will stay until the show ends.

We first encounter Howard, Clegg's neighbour cleaning the windows lamenting his plain life when as a 16 year old he planned to elope with a 30 year old showgirl while on holiday.

As usual the trio are walking in the countryside, making fun of Foggy's army exploits, Corporal Signwriter as Compo teases him. They spot Digby chasing his donkey around his paddock and Foggy tells everyone that Digby has no strategy to control the donkey. It's the military acumen he lacks.

Back at the pub, we have another guest cameo with swivel eyed Ormeroyd challenging everyone to a fight for a quid. The trio know a loon when they see one and Compo is quick with the haemorrhoid jokes. Trouble is when an exasperated Digby walks into the pub he does take up the challenge for a fight.

Back at the cafe we have Pearl joining Nora, Wally and Ivy having a chat about men especially as Howard is known to wander off. Crusher is still struggling to get a grip of the catering trade.

Foggy finds that controlling Digby's donkey is not so easy and the trio catch Howard and Marina at it, that is dancing the tango out in the fields. Oh I wish they were at it, we would be spared Roy Clarke stretching a particular subplot for the next 25 years.
