Marvel writers excited about arrival of 'shared universe' in Avengers movie

22 December 2009 11:27 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

While we have seen superhero teams on screen before in X-Men and Fantastic Four, we've not yet seen several heroes crossing over from their own films into one ensemble movie.

This will happen in The Avengers, the 2012 Marvel Studios team-up movie bringing together Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth's Thor, Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and possibly Hawkeye, Edward Norton's Hulk, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and others.

Staff at Marvel Comics are excited to see how the concept of uniting all those characters will work on the big screen.

In an interview with Newsarama, several of them have given their views on the Avengers film.

Writer Brian Michael Bendis, who for five years has been the 'architect' of the Avengers comic, is part of the creative committee that consults on movies in development at Marvel Studios, including The Avengers.

Marvel 'considering filming Captain America in UK'

20 December 2009 5:17 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

With Iron Man 2 set for release next May and Kenneth Branagh's Thor ready to start filming in January, Marvel's next superhero project to get off the ground will be The First Avenger: Captain America.

A year after the film comes out in 2011, the stars-and-stripes supersoldier will go on to appear in team-up film The Avengers.

Director Joe Johnston recently joined the Captain America project after finishing work on horror remake The Wolfman, due out in February. No casting has been announced yet, though fans (and The Geek Files itself) have been putting forward lists of possible contenders.

But could it be filmed in the UK?...

In the latest tidbit, California-based props maker Independent Studio Services has hinted that the movie will be shot in Britain.

The company's owner/operator Gregg Bilson Jr tweeted: "Marvel films is considering filming Captain America in the UK, Wtf!"

Actually, it's not such a 'Wtf! »

'Iron Man 2' And Other Marvel Movies Are Successful Due To Comic Book Writers, Says Joe Quesada

18 December 2009 1:13 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Following the fantastically received "Iron Man 2" trailer, it's clear that the moviegoing public is enthused about Marvel Studios' upcoming film slate.

While the folks on the DC Comics side of the aisle have had plenty of success through "The Dark Knight" and hope to achieve similar results with "Jonah Hex" and "Green Lantern," many eyes are understandably on Marvel's ambitious plan to link "Iron Man," "Thor" and "The First Avenger: Captain America" together in 2012's "The Avengers."

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada— who, alongside creators like Brian Michael Bendis, has had a notable level of involvement in Marvel's movie projects — spoke about what he believes separates Marvel Studios' output from other comic book films. In essence, it has everything to do with the comic book creators themselves.

"But the beauty of the Marvel films now, is that guys who work in comics are involved, »

The Editor's Desk: The Top 10 Robert Downey Jr. Performances

17 December 2009 6:54 AM, PST | AMC - Script to Screen | See recent AMC - Script to Screen news »

2008 was clearly the year of Robert Downey Jr.  And why not? The man has gone through a lot of personal adversity (granted, most of which was his own doing), but managed to pick himself up to re-establish himself and his career. The year started for him with two smash hits, Iron Man and Tropic Thunder, and then went on to give a solid performance in "The Soloist".

Now, 2010 seems to be set for another huge year for Downey.  On Christmas day, just over a week away, the new film "Sherlock Holmes" will open.  Then to kick off the Summer movie season in May, Downey returns as Tony Starks in "Iron Man 2".

So as we enter this season of Downey, I thought I'd take a moment to look back at his films up to this point, and offer my personal list of his best performances. (Remember, this is a list of his best performances, »

Iron Man 2 Update: Sam Rockwell’s Evil Accountant Strikes, ScarJo on the Avengers

16 December 2009 8:51 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

If by “strike” you mean stand in front of a skinny mic articulating, no doubt, some evil scheme that will bring the world to its knees. Muahahahahahha!! Or just plain talking. Look, he’s white and skinny and he has nerdy glasses and pretty ordinary hair. Plus, he’s played by Sam Rockwell, so you know the guy is a bad apple. He’s like a younger version of Gary Oldman, minus the Brit accent. In the comic book sequel, Rockwell plays industrialist Justin Hammer, who is a rival to Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who as you’ll recall, came out as being Iron Man at the end of the first movie. Jon Favreau directs again. Over in the skin-tight and physically fit land of the Black Widow, aka Scarlett Johansson, the actress talked to the Daily Record about returning for “The Avengers”. “I hope it will happen. I »

New 'Iron Man 2' Photos: Jon Favreau, Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow And More!

15 December 2009 5:01 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Just when it seemed like "Iron Man 2" news was hitting a lull, Paramount has released three (semi-)new images from the much-anticipated sequel.

Click on the photo above for our gallery of "Iron Man 2" images.

The new trio of photos feature a shot of Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer that we've seen versions of before, a new shot of Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, and a photo of director Jon Favreau chatting it up with stars Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle.

Two of the photos appear to be from the scene in which Tony Stark offers testimony regarding the Iron Man armor to government officials, while the Pepper Potts shot looks to be at the same desk we saw Black Widow (played by Scarlett Johansson) checking out in an earlier image.

Scarlett Johansson On Reprising Her 'Iron Man 2' Role: 'I Hope It Will Happen...She's A Big Part Of The Avengers'

15 December 2009 2:14 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

After last week's flurry of "Iron Man 2" imagery, news regarding next year's blockbuster sequel has slowed up a bit — but that doesn't mean the media isn't looking for more info from the film's stars.

Most recently, Scarlett Johansson chatted up The Daily Record about her "Iron Man 2" training regimen, her skin-tight costume and the fight training she had for the role of Natasha Romanoff, the Russian superspy known as Black Widow. She even offered up some thoughts on whether we'll see her suit up again when Marvel's superhero team-up film "The Avengers" comes around.

"What do I like about the character? Everything. Her fabulous outfit. Her wonderful hair. Everything," said Johansson.

"The character does a lot of hand-to-hand combat, it's a sort of defensive style of fighting because she's small," the actress said of her training.

Johansson seemed to reiterate stories echoed by many of the other "Iron Man 2 »

Robert Downey Jr. And Jude Law Talk 'Iron Man 2,' 'Sherlock Holmes' And... 'Watchmen'?

14 December 2009 4:31 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Well, apparently it wasn't Robert Downey Jr. who called Sherlock Holmes a superhero — but that doesn't mean the comparison isn't an apt one. When we sat down to chat with the actor and his "Sherlock Holmes" co-star Jude Law during a recent press event, we had to ask him about another little project on his radar these days: "Iron Man 2."

While Downey was remarkably tight-lipped about the future of the "Iron Man" franchise (and his potential involvement in "The Avengers"), we did manage to forge a comic book connection between the two actors when the topic turned to Law's sealed-in-ink comics cred.

"Oh, it's going to be great," said Downey of "Iron Man 2," only to remark that a widely disseminated quote in which he compares Sherlock Holmes to a superhero didn't actually come from him. However, Law said he might want to take credit for the quote anyways. »

Joe Quesada Loves Iron Man 2, Meets for Captain America

10 December 2009 4:48 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Joe Quesada tweeted some updates  a few hours ago for the Marvel Studios moviegoers out there about next summer’s Iron Man 2 and the relatively-quiet-in-development The First Avenger: Captain America.

On Iron Man 2, he says he’s seen a rough cut of the film and is in love with it, praising director Jon Favreau for his masterful work. This is not dissimilar to his high regard for Thor director Kenneth Branagh, whom he says he could listen to talk and act out scenes of Thor for hours on end. As for Captain America,  he says they recently had a very good script meeting.

Here are Quesada’s messages:

“Back in La and just saw a rough cut of Iron Man 2. I worship before the alter of the mighty Favreau, he is da man!”

David Maisel leaving Marvel as chairman

7 December 2009 8:01 PM, PST | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

The chairman of Marvel Studios is departing the company when The Walt Disney Company finishes formalizing its acquisition of the comic book publisher. David Maisel, the guy that helped attract investors to give up $525 million dollars of financing money so Marvel Studios could go out and make movies of Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, as well as the upcoming ones Thor, The Avengers and Captain America, is headed out the door.

Maisel once worked for Disney as director of corporate development and strategic planning; ironically, the merger between Marvel and his former employer may be the cause for his departure. Actually, the reason why Maisel is leaving Marvel but hasn't been offered a job with Disney or the new Marvel makes the move all the more speculatitive. It's not like Maisel hasn't done a good job for the company's investors; all indications are that Marvel Studios is about to »
