When an experiment into a new source of natural fuel goes disastrously wrong, a rash of massive hurricanes rips across North America. A scientist, originally responsible for the design of the new power plant but who has walked away from the project, must get his family to safety before the hurricanes merge, creating a “hypercane” with the power to wipe America off the map.

While Asylum Films has made a name for itself ripping off big budget scifi and action movies and producing tons of schlock for SyFy, Arrowstorm Entertainment has survived with fantasy titles that have been mostly crowd funded. For some reason, I can't sit through Snakes on a Train but give me The Crown and the Dragon (trailer), the fist of Arrowstorm's movies I watched, and I'm more than Ok. In part it's the fact that many of the movies feature female leads and for some reason, the mediocre effects don't really distract as much as they do in other movies.

Prepare yourselves people. The Asylum is coming to TV on a regular basis. Oh yes, the guys that have brought us cheap rip offs of everything from Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies) to Snakes on a Plane (Snakes on a Train) and the ridiculous Sharknado, have signed a deal with Syfy to produce 13 episodes of a action-horror zombie series titled Z Nation.
True, once in a while The Asylum manages to eek out something which is curiously entertaining (I didn't watch all of Sharknado but I laughed at quite a bit of what I saw) but for the most part, the quality of their work is sub-par and only mildly entertaining. I'm not sure on which end of the scale (gloriously bad or absolutely terrible) Z Nation will be but [Continued ...]...

So here’s Seth Meyers, former Weekend Update anchor, hosting his first-ever episode of Late Night. He’s following in the footsteps of Jimmy Fallon, another former Weekend Update anchor. The two men are different, kind of. Fallon on Update was adorable and Meyers on Update was adorably rude. (Fallon is to Meyers as Michelangelo is to Raphael.) But they’re also not that different — not when you consider the whole great ecosystem of comedy that has grown lush in this era of cable and internet and podcasts and books based on Tumblrs getting turned into TV shows. Sharknado. A simple “portmanteau” – two words combined together to make one. The two words in this case were most likely “shark” and “tornado,” which make-up two of mother nature’s deadliest weapons in her arsenal of terrors, thrown together to spawn an idea for an incredibly creative original film. A film that could only be produced by The Asylum, of course. If you’re not familiar with the The Asylum, they’re the studio behind some of the most of the popular low-budget creature-features of recent times: 2-Headed Shark Attack, Mega Shark vs. Gatoroid and Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus… you’re beginning to see a pattern emerge, right?
But The Asylum doesn’t exclusively make movies using the formula “shark plus other thing equals arggggh!” Like any other studio, The Asylum has to make movies with mainstream appeal to finance their artsy, more personal films like Sharknado. And that...

After the success of "Sharknado," The Asylum (Transmorphers, Snakes on a Train) announced plans that it's making a sequel. But the company is also working on a sequel to its "Mega Shark" movie and wants you to be apart of it. The Asylum has revealed that it will choose one devoted "Mega Shark" fan to appear in "Mega Shark vs Mecha Shark" (aka "Mega Shark 3"). The fan will get a walk-on role, including a death scene, as well as air fare and lodging for a two-day trip to Los Angeles, where the movie will be filmed. To enter the contest, people must submit photographic or video proof that they're the biggest "Mega Shark" fans. The Asylum will then evaluate everything and select one winner, based on creativity, intensity, and level of enthusiasm for the franchise. Submissions must be sent to contest@theasylum.cc by 5p Pst on July 30th. Participants...

Paranormal Entity. Snakes on a Train. The Da Vinci Treasure. These are some of the more notable movies that have come from the dubious production company Global Asylum. As you can gather from their titles, Asylum is a maker of mockbusters, low-budget straight-to-dvd features that essentially piggyback off the fandemonium surrounded movies like Paranormal Activity, Snakes on a Plane or The Da Vinci Code. The Asylum is chief among these rip-off moviemakers, but when they tried to ride the coat tails of Warner Bros.' The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey with the intended release of Age of the Hobbits they got shot down. Deadline reports Warner Bros., along with New Line Cinema, MGM and producer Saul Zaentz, have succeeded in winning their case to get a temporary restraining order against the mockbuster, pleading to federal judge Philip Gutierrez that Asylum purposely chose the same release week for their straight-to-dvd release...

One hobbit will rule them all—for now, at least. A California federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order barring the release of Age of the Hobbits, a low-budget straight-to-video release from an independent film production company called The Asylum that was slated for release on Tuesday, just days before the opening of director Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Warner Bros., New Line, MGM, and Hobbit producer Saul Zaentz filed suit against The Asylum last month, charging that the company was trying to infringe on its copyrights and confuse consumers with its film.

We've had Snakes on a Plane and even Snakes on a Train - now we're getting snakes on a boat.
At least, that's how it looks in the first image inside the ark from Darren Aronofsky's Noah movie.
Two piles of slithering serpents - presumably, one pair of every species that could be found - are visible, along with a crocodile. Click on the image above for a larger version.
And, regardless of some ridiculous comments online, scientists say it takes a million years for a new species to evolve and this means the same number of varieties of snakes were alive then as today.
That's unless, of course, Aronofsky is ignoring evolution and leaning towards creationist beliefs or going down an even more fantastical route in which the Great Flood was responsible for a mass extinction.

The most recent episode of Doctor Who has raised a serious question here at the WhatCulture! offices, which is better: Dinosaurs on a Spaceship (Doas) or Snakes on a Plane (Soap)?
Using a completely unbiased and scientific method, the crack team of me will determine which is better, Doas or Soap, based on a cumulative score in three areas: Cast, Creatures and Curses.
Cast
Doas: The Doctor, Nefertiti, Hunter Guy, Amy Pond, Rory Pond and Danish catering officer Olaf Petersen.
Soap: Samuel “Mother F***’” Jackson
Sam and The Doctor cancel one another out. Nefertiti & Hunter Guy are ho-hum, so no score. Amy Pond and Rory Pond are a big negative, which drags Doas into the red. Amy for trying to slide into the main character slot, usurping The Doctor. Rory because he’s a bumbling vagina. The series can’t get rid of them fast enough. Luckily Olaf Petersen saves the day.

Now the British summer has made a belated reappearance, we can expect a few downsides such as hay fever, sunburn and insect bites - but no flying pests in our gardens can rival Dragon Wasps. And a can of the standard repellent probably won't do much good either.

Director: Joseph J. Lawson. Review: Adam Wing. ‘The Asylum presents’ is a headline that sends shivers down the spine of film fans the world over. Responsible for cinematic atrocities (or mockbusters as they’ve come to be known) like Paranormal Entity and Snakes on a Train, The Asylum has been churning out direct-to-video masterpieces for the past 15 years. It’s probably best known (in my world at least) for giving 80s pop stars Debbie Gibson and Tiffany a new lease of life, and reminding me once and for all why nostalgia is best left in the past. But films like Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus are sure to stand the test of time – unless of course it’s quality entertainment you’re after. In which case, you might want to give War of the Worlds 2: The Next Wave a wide berth. Joseph J. Lawson leads the charge on this one,...

Katrina Bowden (Tucker and Dale Versus Evel) and Randy Wayne ("True Blood") star. The film is set to hit theaters on October 5th. Well this is somewhat unexpected, and yet it's also been a long time coming. By now most movie fans are familiar with The Asylum, a low budget production company that has made a name for themselves by putting out direct-to-video rip-offs of popular Hollywood blockbusters (often referred to as "mockbusters"). Some of their not-so-acclaimed films include Transmorphers, Snakes on a Train, Paranormal Entity and Battle of Los Angeles, and they are usually released just prior to the Hollywood equivalent, creating confusion at video rental stores and on Netflix. Up until now, most studios have not really paid much attention to these atrocities, assuming that most consumers are smart enough to be able to tell them apart. This week, however, Universal Pictures has finally taken up arms against them, slapping them with a lawsuit over their upcoming Battleship clone, entitled American Battleship. Just how worried are the execs at Universal that their mega budget Battleship movie might sink at the box office? Apparently they’re worried enough that they’ve actually filed a lawsuit against The Asylum over its American Battleship mockbuster.
I remember writing an article years ago after The Asylum announced their When a Killer Calls mockbuster, stunned they weren’t being sued into oblivion since the film was damn near the exact same movie as the remake of When a Stranger Calls with only a single word in the title changed. I also remember being stunned that producing movies titled Universal Soldiers and The Terminators didn’t result in major lawsuits. After 90 percent of the world's population has been destroyed by a zombie plague, a group of survivors find themselves battling their way to the island of Catalina. Novel! As a guy who's seen an inordinate number of Asylum titles, I'm slightly hopeful...

Thor with an Uzi. Richard Grieco as his archnemesis Loki. The quality you’ve come to expect from an Asylum movie (the people who brought you 2010: Moby Dick and Titanic II). All bound together in Asgardian gear on Syfy. What more could you ask for this weekend?
How about the destruction of the fortress of Valhalla? Loki stealing Thor’s Hammer of Invincibility? The fate of mankind hanging in the balance? (Bet you never saw that one coming.) The ultimate showdown between the forces of good and evil? And dragons to boot!

Whilst The Asylum are gaining notoriety for their “giant” monster movies, they’re still best known for their mockbusters – films such as Titanic 2, Snakes on a Train, Transmorphers et al. Well now they’re back to doing what they do best , with the mockbuster to end all mockbusters – Almighty Thor.
When the demon god Loki destroys the fortress of Valhalla and steals the Hammer of Invincibility, only the young hero Thor can protect earth from Armageddon.

Today must be the day for news about bad direct-to-dvd movies. On top of The Scorpion King 3 news, fans of bad movies have one more to look forward to, although it's coming much sooner. The Asylum production studio (creators of such films like Titanic II, Snakes on a Train, Sunday School Musical, and Mega Pirahna) is bringing you a sequel to a film you probably never saw, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus. The title pretty much sums up the plot of the first film for you, as bad CGI creatures fight it out. But to top that, these filmmakers dug deep and are presenting Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus!
When I say these movies are bad...I mean terrible. Poor acting, worse special effects, and plot lines that make almost no sense are the normal for The Asylum's movies. They really take B-Movies to an all new level. Even so, there...

Who loves them some Mega Shark? The SyFy network has made a name for itself by playing the cheesiest of cheesy B-movies and the Mega Shark spots take the cake. From a battle with a Giant Octopus to an upcoming rumble with Crocosaurus, the Mega Shark has his hands full...
All that work can make a clearly fake, hugely animated, B-movie shark hungry. What do you feed said beast besides reel after reel of Nic Cage films? How about cheesy Doitios. The company behind the films The Asylum, is a studio behind such classics as "Transmorphers" and "Snakes on a Train," and now a brand new Super Bowl ad courtesy of the Dorito company. Feast on the video below, literally!

The Asylum is a studio behind such nonsense as "Transmorphers" and "Snakes on a Train," but also behind such cheap sci-fi films as "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus," the trailer for which became one of the most popular of last year. Asylum is now developing "Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus" and has decided to enter a competition to create the next Doritos ad that will play during the Super Bowl. Their entry once again features the prehistoric mega shark and is actually pretty funny. Check it out below Commercial:...

The Asylum's Battle of Los Angeles comes out on February 22, 2011, and I'm going to enjoy it, by Crom.
The film production and distribution company The Asylum's rich heritage of stealing movie ideas, cheapening them, and ultimately spewing out more entertaining versions of their high-budget cousins is only stronger as the years go by. Between Snakes on a Train, Transmorphers, and the deal-maker Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, The Asylum isn't just about ripping-off theatrical releases; it casts the forgotten, the downtrodden, and the unusual and gives them a second chance (see Debbie Gibson). It also critiques the most unlikely and cheesy moments of Hollywood action and sci-fi movies and literally makes them larger and cheesier, and then it laughs along with us when we say, 'God, that was so terrible'. Because it's on purpose.
How humiliating that even big director-types like Michael Bay can't see what's so awful about their own movies,...

And he's joined by Dr. Michelle Herman, played by Renee O'Connor (Bitch Slap). "2010: Moby Dick" is scheduled to hit stores on DVD on November 23rd. No word on why the studio put "2010" in the title when the release date is a month from 2011. Trailer: If you cannot see the player, click here.

The Asylum, the company behind "Snakes on a Train" and "Transmorphers," has announced that it is developing "Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus" with Jaleel White, who is best known as Steve Urkel from "Family Matters." After "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus," the massive prehistoric shark returns victorious to face a more dangerous opponent in the form of a Crocosaurus, which is discovered in the jungles of Africa. The fate of the world is once again at stake. The new movie is directed by Chris Ray, the son of Fred Olen Ray, the helmer of the upcoming "Reptisaurus" and "Megaconda." It is scheduled to appear in stores on DVD on December 21st. And look out for The Asylum's "Mega Python vs Gataroid" to be released soon after.

Something fishy is going on in the world of cinema.
This weekend's much-touted release of Atmosphere's creature pic Piranha 3D, directed by Alexandre Aja, enters the arena on the heels of Syfy's recent fish-themed horror romp Mega Piranha, directed by Eric Forsberg.
And who's keeping score? Well, given the warm reception that Mega Piranha got at Comic-Con and the fact that it was Syfy's No1 watched movie premiere of 2010, probably a lot of people.
We all know about Piranha 3D, a $25million special effects extravaganza helmed by Alexandre Aja (Mirrors, The Hills Have Eyes), produced by Atmosphere Entertainment (The Spiderwick Chronicles, 300), and starring Kelly Brook, Richard Dreyfus, Elizabeth Shue and Ving Rhames.
The appeal of the film (beach babes, bouncing boobs and a girl-on-girl underwater kissing scene between Brook and porn star Riley Steele) was explained on our Lads Lounge blog.
But we don't know quite as much about Mega Piranha,...

The Asylum originally planned the release of their audacious Mega Piranha as something of a mockbuster designed to coincide with the then planned theatrical release of Piranha 3D. When Piranha 3D got pushed back to this weekend, I joked that maybe this time The Asylum can claim that the theatrical movie is mockbustering them. According to the odd press release that showed up in my box today, they've taken my jest to heart.
Mega Piranha director Eric Forsberg has thrown down the gauntlet of sorts by sending out this press release asking which over-the-top piranha flick will reign supreme in the hearts and minds of movie watchers. Read for yourself.

1980s pop princess rivals are reborn as screen pugilists. By Jonathan Bernstein
In 2009, one-time tween-pop princess Debbie Gibson starred in the self-explanatory Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, which went on to be that year's highest-rated original movie on America's SyFy (formerly Sci-Fi) network. This year, Gibson's 1980s chart rival, Tiffany, of I Think We're Alone Now fame, shrieked at CGI mutants in the modestly budgeted cable crowdpleaser Mega Piranha. Few foresaw what would happen next. "SyFy were like, 'It would be great to get you and Deborah together,'" says Tiffany, now 39. "Straight away I said, 'I will give her a call, I will do whatever it takes to make this happen.' People have been waiting 25 years for us to do something together, although I think they thought it would be musically."
Instead, 2011 will see the singers face off against terrifying new misfit creatures – and each other – in Mega Python vs Gatoroid.

in HeckleVision – text your jokes on your phone and they appear on the screen with the movie!
Sunday, August 8 at the Alamo Ritz
Advance tix available right here
What can I possibly tell you to describe this movie any better than the title already does? There’s a huge effing shark and a gigantic prehistoric octopus.
Why are they fighting? Who cares? Thousands of years ago in some sort of prehistoric time when all kinds of shit was bigger than it is today, they got into some sort of battle to the death. But before they could finish their epic war, an ice age came along and froze them. So then millenia later Debbie Gibson (literally, she’s the lead in this movie) goes to try to check out the migratory patterns of some humpback whales in a stolen submarine, but something goes wrong and...

The mockbuster genre has spawned from a long and fine tradition of exploitation cinema. There’s films such as Eric Forsberg’s Mega Piranha that are finding audiences across the world desperate for some hokey and ludicrous fun. The old adage that ‘nobody sets out to make a bad movie’ has been turned upside down.
The collective experience of watching a dreadful film, whether on the cinema screen or with friends, is turning into something of a cult phenomenon. Laced with irony, but played straight and with some seriously deranged ideas, the mockbuster series might become a new art form unto itself. Are they the product of counter-cinema or just bad film-making? Like Larry Kaufman’s Troma outfit, these new breed of movies are marketed as ‘so bad they’re good’, and it works.
Could the mockbuster be the evil twin of the Hollywood blockbuster set to wreck havoc of its own?...
