That Certain Smile

I've always have had a soft spot for actor Stephen Lewis. My earliest television memories if of Blakey in 'On the Buses.'

He makes his debut as Clem Hemingway, the miserable patient in hospital that the trip go to visit. His moniker 'Smiler' was not used in this episode.

Clem is miserable as he misses his dog, more so than his wife. Seymour has a plan to bring the dog to him but it is a bit vicious. So Seymour knocks it out but he was not too careful with the dosage.

Apparently everyone in Holmfirth was ill in this episode. Everyone turns up at the hospital to see someone. Edie and Wesley are there to see his sister. Even Nora and Marina turn up.

The episode begins with the trio reminiscing about a random girl Rene Longstaffe from their past, she had a limp. It still never feels right when Seymour joins in when it was clear he did not know Compo and Clegg as children, although Roy Clarke retconned it for First of the Summer Wine.

It turns out that the trio are not sitting and talking about the past in some remote country spot. It is on the grounds of the hospital as they get moved on.

The hospital shop was not the most convincing set, there was a fireplace on display. Also someone must had a backhander with the chocolates on display. They were all from the Mars group. Not a Dairy Milk to be seen.

Smiler would later become a regular, although this would be his wife's only appearance. She would leave him because of his sunny disposition.
