Wesley for the first time!
keysam-026107 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode has a few notable things in it. It's the first time we meet Wesley. He has the same garage but not quite the same personality - he will be a bit more mellow by the time he becomes a regular. The actor was a local, hired as an extra initially who ended up snagging the part of Wesley and becoming an essential part of the line-up of characters.

We also get another look at Clegg's living room, in which the trio spend sometime describing Sid as "a big Dick", which is a bit of a surprise but a reminder that the show wasn't above being a bit coarse in the earlier days.

Wesley needs someone to drive his experimental car & quite why Compo immediately thinks it will be him, apart from paranoia, is a mystery as up till now it has always seemed Compo was a non-driver. Suspect he may just not have a licence.....

Anyway, no, it's Sid who is lined up (in Foggy's head at any rate) to do the driving, in an effort to make Ivy realise he (Sid) is NOT a big Dick.

Unfortunately, Ivy has other ideas....

Back to the drawing board. Wesley has been promised a driver. Yes, Compo, that paranoia was well founded!

However, when Clegg brings Nora along & she proceeds to don the garter he offers her (plus Foggy assuring him the car will never start), he plants a smacker on Nora (one of the biggest in the entire show I reckon) Compo takes his seat in the car.....

Absolute vintage episode. Perfection really.

Drive to impress
Prismark109 September 2016
It is the first appearance of Wesley Pegden as Holmfirth's favourite car tinkerer turns up as an eccentric mechanic trying to build a high performance car that will zoom through the Yorkshire Dales.

Foggy volunteers Sid to go 0 to 60 in 5 seconds in order to impress Ivy and he even dresses up in a silly driver's costume but Ivy is having none of it.

Foggy then ropes in Compo to drive. Strangely I never knew Compo could drive, it is always Clegg who always reluctantly driving about.

Foggy persuades Compo by telling him that he will not have to do anything as the car will never start. Compo realises that he can pretend to be a daredevil to impress Nora Batty who also gives him a glimpse of her garter, eek!

It would be a couple of years before Wesley returns again in The Loxley Lozenge and in his early appearances he was a prickly character until he was smoothed down a little when Thora Hird was cast to play his wife.
