'Survival Of The Dead' Eyes Spring Release

20 December 2009 6:54 AM, PST | AMC - Script to Screen | See recent AMC - Script to Screen news »

Are you ready for a big surprise?  Are you sitting down?  Ok... here it is: George A. Romero has a new Zombie movie coming to theaters!  I know!  Crazy isn't it!

Ok, all kidding aside, George A. Romero's newest Zomibe film is titled "Survival of the Dead" which played this year at both the Toronto International Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival and is being distributed by Magnet.

"Story centers on a refuge whose isolation allows two powerful families to maintain a semblance of order in the wake of the zombie holocaust. But as the inhabitants slowly die off, the two clans become sharply divided, leading to an escalating showdown with echoes of a classic Western standoff."

The film is set aiming at spring 2010 as a release date.

Question:  What is your favorite Romero Zombie film?

Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction One Sheet

19 December 2009 11:43 AM, PST | HugAZombie | See recent HugAZombie news »

Kevin Hamedani's "political zombedy" Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction is finally getting released next January as part of After Dark Films' "8 Films to Die For" series starting January 29 through February 4. After Dark has just released the movie's first poster since receiving distribution.

Check out the synopsis, courtesy of the Zmd website:

An idyllic island town is under attack by that most invasive of pests: zombies! Port Gamble is being overrun with brain-eaters, and the people seem powerless to stave them off. But wait, a ragtag band of rebels is trying to turn the tide and push the invading hoards of undead back. It sounds familiar, sure, but this time stereotypes are on parade (and parody ) in a retake on the zombie thriller. Gore abounds (really abounds) and the current events-based hits keep coming in this send-up of zombie movie clichés where no subculture escapes unscathed.

Newborn Dead: I want to go to Zombieland

11 October 2009 7:43 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Every once in awhile I can say “horror just gets better and better” and I can recall applying this “thought to self” the first time I saw The Shining or even way back when The Exorcist made everyone scream. Don’t think I am going to compare Zombieland to either of the aforementioned movies, but I have not seen a horror comedy so thoroughly enjoyable in a very long time. Usually it takes a comedy to make me laugh out loud as I sit alone in an empty theatre, but Zombieland did the trick.

First I found myself, in my usual manner dreading the trailers. I was hoping that at least they would all be horror trailers to kind of get me in the mood. My disgust at the number of trailers I have to sit through after the torturous “First Look” or “The twenty” – you know those stupid commercials »

Weekly Poll Results: Best Zombie Movie

7 October 2009 9:31 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

I don't think anyone will be surprised to see George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead top last week's poll, but wow... it was an extremely close race between the top 3 choices. Edgar Wright's Shaun of the Dead and Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later just barely fell short of the #1 spot, while Romero's original Night of the Living Dead and Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake rounded out the top 5. I fully acknowledge that Day of the Dead should have also been on this list (as many of you have pointed out), particularly in place of Evil Dead 2 (although Evil Dead 2 did still get a fair number of votes). I guess I just thought Romero had already been fairly represented. Other than that, do you agree with the results? I'm a little disappointed that Return of the Living Dead was way down at the bottom, but then again, »

Zombieland (2009) Movie Review

4 October 2009 2:18 PM, PDT | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Ah, Zombies. There’s really no better way to spend an evening with your loved one than in the tender care of the recently deceased or horribly infected. Zombies are fun for the whole family! There’s something in the Zombie movie for everyone. Delight in the shambling hoards of the slow Zombie as they lurch, crawl, or slide, trailing little bits of peeled, mouldering or putrefying outer or inner fleshy stuff, recently but no longer near and dear to the re-animated dead or bloodshot and wild eyed microbial infested remains of the corner checkout girl. If the slow Zombie isn’t your style, the fast Zombie may be more to your liking. Where the slow Zombie must employ mass numbers of the heaving and decayed to get you cornered, the fast Zombie is all kinds of fun all by themselves. The fast Zombie isn’t just fast, he’s quiet and sneaky too. »

Q&A: Zombieland Director Ruben Fleischer

1 October 2009 9:45 AM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Dueling Zombies: Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) and Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) bate the undead with a banjo air in Ruben Fleischer's debut film, Zombieland.Ruben Fleischer is nervous. Not so much as he sits in his room on this day at the Waldorf-Astoria in Midtown Manhattan—congenial may be more appropriate—but some deep-seated anxiety over his feature film debut, Zombieland, is poorly cloaked. Fleischer, who comes from a music video background, knows that a lot professionally rides on the success of Zombieland (a title Fleischer admits he doesn't care for). The title doesn't offer any hint that it's not your run-of-the-mill zombie film. Sure, there are plenty of zombies. And, sure, said zombies offer up plenty of carnage. What it doesn't do is convey the surprising sense of humor that drives the film while managing to avoid the pitfalls that could have turned Zombieland into a parody. In other words: »

Film Junk Poll: What is the Best Zombie Movie?

30 September 2009 2:51 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

I thought for sure we had already done a poll about zombie movies before, but apparently we haven't, and with Zombieland hitting theatres this weekend (to particularly stellar reviews [1], no less), I thought it would be an appropriate topic for discussion. I have my suspicions about which movie will come out victorious here, but it should be a pretty tight battle either way. Do you go with one of the old classics or the new wave? Slow-walking or fast-running? Serious or funny? I know there are plenty of great zombie flicks that aren't on this list, so cast your vote in the poll and then discuss your other favourites in the comments below. Dreamworks' Xombie?

Nope, that's not a typo in the title. At least not My typo (for once...). That's a pitch currently being looked into by Dreamworks, with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci along to produce. Aren't you two supposed to be working on a Trek sequel? Focus, guys! The proposed film centers on a dead dude named Dirge who protects humanity from evil zombies. As opposed to the good kind. So, how many Zombie movie projects are in the pipeline thus far? Why not just go ahead and call it a Dead Heat »

'Night of the Living Dead: Origins' Does Not Sound Like a Good Idea

16 September 2009 4:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but Hollywood tends to break things. If a formula worked once, it will invariably be remade, repackaged, and resold over and over again until the equation is no longer profitable. But occasionally the Hollywood hive mindset is not content with merely breaking something. Every now and then it has to rape and pillage, and thus we shall soon have Night of the Living Dead: Origins. Wallow in these few key bits from The Hollywood Reporter's news on the matter:

"Zombie movie "Night of the Living Dead" is coming back, this time in a 3D CGI format and without the involvement of George Romero." ... "On the story front, De Soto, who wrote the script with David R. Schwartz, wants to update the tale partially by bringing out the characters' backstories and make what he called "an American-style anime."" ... "The aim of the »

George Romero's Survival of the Dead Movie Review

14 September 2009 8:00 PM, PDT | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

Zombie movie legend George A. Romero and his recent films occupy an odd niche, to say the least. Having basically invented the zombie genre while at the same time arguably perfecting it with his first film, 1968's Night of the Living Dead, Romero made two sequels that each tried to expand on the social commentary-amidst-the-carnage he pioneered in the first. The first sequel, 1978's Dawn of the Dead is great while the second, Day of the Dead (1985), which introduced us to Romero's idea of zombie as degenerate, trainable creature rather than animated magical eating machine, is not. Exclusive Interview: The 4th Reich Director Shaun Robert Smith

You may not have heard of The 4th Reich yet, but soon you’ll be hearing much more along with news of the film’s director, Shaun Robert Smith.

The film, which begins production in April, is the first feature film from Smith, whose short film The Soldier displayed an excellent knack of cinematography and suspense.

It also won a small boatload of awards and gained a national theatrical release in the UK.

You can watch The Soldier here.

The short film forms a sort of foundation for The 4th Reich.

From the official synopsis for the film:

June 1944, after the glorious victory on D-day, the armies of the combined allied forces begin their long push to Berlin with the aim of bringing down Hitler and the despised Nazi regime of the Third Reich.

But buried deep in secret files German Reichstag, is the chilling reality of Hitler’s plan »

Halloween II

Halloween II

Directed by: Rob Zombie

Cast: Scout Taylor-Compton, Malcolm McDowell

Running Time: 1 hr 45 mins

Rating: R

Release Date: August 28, 2009

Plot: Serial killer Michael Myers returns to Haddonfield, Illinois, to finish some family business left off from 2007’s Halloween and kill his sister (Taylor-Compton).

Who’s It For? Fans of mainstream horror, especially those who can forgive some obvious imperfections for the sake of seeing lots o’ blood on the big screen.

Expectations: I am a big fan of the Halloween that started it all back in 1977, but I must say I was not that impressed with my recent viewing of Rob Zombie’s remake of the film from two years ago. Still, I was very curious to see if this could be the first Zombie movie I’d actually like.

Scorecard (0-10)

Actors:

Scout Taylor-Compton as Laurie Strode: It’s difficult to compare her aura with that of the original Laurie, »

Ron Perlman And Judge Reinhold in the Same Zombie Movie? Yup.

12 July 2009 10:49 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Let’s face it, if you’re a genre freak, Ron Perlman (”Hellboy”) in anything remotely genre is pretty good stuff, even if the movie ends up being not so good stuff. The guy just does good work, even if he’s just phoning it in. The fact is, his phoning it in is usually better than some people’s 100%. Dude is that good. His latest is a zombie thriller for Circle of Confusion called “Gatekeeper”, and besides Perlman, the movie will boast not one, but two names from the past — Lea Thompson and Judge Reinhold. You know, the tall, skinny guy from “Beverly Hills Cop”? Yes, him. He’s in this, too. Variety says the film will be coming to us courtesy of Circle of Confusion and first-time director Isaac Meisenheimer, who also penned the screenplay. In “Gatekeeper”, a simple mistake leaves three friends to defend their town from a zombie outbreak. »

David Hayter to Write Deadworld Zombie Movie

11 June 2009 9:06 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Did somebody order more zombies? Actor and screenwriter David Hayter (X-Men, Watchmen) is set to pen another comic book adaptation, this time drawing from Stuart Kerr and Ralph Griffith's independent zombie series Deadworld. However, this is not quite your typical zombie story. The comics are from the point of view of the zombies, focusing on King Zombie, "a Harley-riding corpse who holds a grudge against the survivors who made him an outcast". Clearly, only one man is suitable for this role: Nicolas Cage! Variety [1] says that Pandemonium and Framelight Productions are hoping that this will spawn a "multipic story arc", and that Hayter will also be in charge of the visual design of the film. He had this to say: "It's very much about the design of the Deadworld and creating cool, frightening but not necessarily gory creatures... I am a huge fan of zombie mythology." It's not clear if »

Fangoria's International Contributor Penny B. Dreadful returns with a look at the grassroots effort to bring a new breed of UK Zombie film to the big screen...

British filmmaker Antony Lane is taking 'independent' filmmaking in a very literal way, by attempting to independently raise a minimum of £100,000 (approximately Us$225,000) through donations over the internet. Invasion Of The Not Quite Dead already has the backing of some of horror's most iconic names (Ken Russell, Kevin Pollak, Tom Savini and Leslie Simpson among others). Things are off to a good start for Lane with a spot in a BBC documentary; a Guinness World Record attempt at a zombie gathering; and legions of ravenous fans already under his belt. We talk to Lane about his unique approach to filmmaking.

11 Greatest Zombie Movie Tag Lines

A short while ago in an email, Rob G. sent out a call for Top 10 lists, and specifically mentioned he'd like me to do one that was zombie-related. I have to be honest: I dreaded this assignment. While I'm a real talented writer, and it's easy for me to figure out what I do or don't like, it's very hard for me to put my likes or dislikes in order. Sure, it's easy to identify #1, and maybe # 2 or 3... but beyond this I'm lost. But Rob's a genuinely good guy who loves Icons even more than I do, so I knew I had to take myself to task and give him a list. And lo and behold, I couldn't even keep it to 10.

Picking 11 out of the multitudes wasn't so bad. These were my criteria, in order of importance: 1. How effectively the line sold the movie. »
