- The distraught daughter of a deceased gemologist accuses Officer Johnson of stealing valuable uncut jewels from her late father's car.
- Small-time sneak thief Chuck Jackson steals valuable uncut jewels from a car belonging to Professor McKay, a gemologist who was carrying the jewels to be appraised. The theft is not detected until Officer Johnson impounds the car after Professor McKay suffers an ultimately fatal heart attack while driving home. When the jewels are not found in the car, the professor's daughter Ella becomes concerned for her late father's reputation (and her own social standing). She irately accuses Officer Johnson of the theft, since he was the only one known to have access to the vehicle. Newspaper reporter Ed Borden asks Dan Mathews about the incident and Dan realizes that he has only a short time to break the case before the story is published. A credit card receipt found in Professor McKay's car leads Dan and Officer Johnson to the gas station where Jackson is employed and they realize that they have a potential suspect when Dan is able to discreetly catch Jackson stealing an automobile jack from the trunk of his undercover car. Dan and Officer Johnson follow at a discreet distance when Jackson leaves the station to attempt to peddle his largess and an armed confrontation becomes inevitable when they realize he has led them directly to "Mr. Davis", the individual who disposes of his stolen goods.—Sam Spear
