The Best of the Decade: 2000-2009

23 December 2009 9:56 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

A best of the decade list is an incredible thing to consider. The Aughts were ripe with imagination and originality. The past ten years also came jam packed with many new visionary directors that changed the cinematic landscape forever. Yet, at the same time, it was also a decade wrought with remakes, rip-offs, ten-year late sequels, and films based on preexisting toy properties, comic books, and amusement park rides. George Lucas offended almost everyone by dusting off his Star Wars mythos and adding copious amounts of CGI to it. And Batman, a caped figure in tights who last flourished in the trippy sixties, managed to crawl head and shoulders above the rest at the box office to be crowned king. Thus proving that the so-called "geek" or "fanboy" truly ruled the silver screen over the course of this tumultuous past decade. Today, we look at the ten films that ruled »

Jonah Hill’s ‘21 Jump Street’ Movie Gets ‘Cloudy’ Directors

21 December 2009 3:15 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Jonah Hill (Funny People, Superbad) who has been working on an update of the 80’s television show 21 Jump Street for Sony, has announced that the movie is in negotiations to sign it’s directors. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who directed September’s Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, are potentially signing on, according to the Hollywood Reporter blog.

For the duo, who have also written for shows How I Met Your Mother, created MTV’s Clone High and Extreme Movie, this will mark their first time directing a live-action feature. Fans of Clone High may also remember Lord as the voice of the deranged Principal Scudworth.

The new version of the undercover teenagers high school drama, as described by Hill in Complex Magazine, will be “an R-rated, insane, Bad-Boys-meets-John Hughes-type movie.” With Hill executive producing and probably starring, along with writer Michael Bacall, currently on the upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. »

10 Movie Events That Shaped the Decade (For Movie Fans)

21 December 2009 10:29 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

We’ve come to the end of 2009, so we thought we’d weigh in with a look back at the first 10 years of the 21st century in the movie world and discuss the various different “events” which shaped the decade. Obviously we can’t cover absolutely everything, but sticking true to our core movie genres on the site, we’re just going to concentrate on the comic-book, sci-fi, action (and so forth) types of movies and take a look at what films had the maximum impact over this decade.

It’s amazing to think that it’s been 10 years since movies like The Matrix, American Beauty and Fight Club (to name but a few) came out in 1999 (check out our 1999 decade highlight, if you haven’t already). A Lot of movies – somewhere in the vicinity of 5,000-6,000 – have been released since then. We’ve had the good, the bad and »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Four

19 December 2009 11:50 PM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Georgia

Opens: 2010

Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech

Director: Renny Harlin

Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.

Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.

Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three »

Top 7 Movies of the Decade (another opinion)

19 December 2009 5:09 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

I have always struggled with the notion that perhaps movies, as a whole, are getting worse. As anyone who has seen what’s been playing for the past ten years will notice, there’s plenty of evidence to indicate that the brightness from the moving pictures is getting darker. Screenwriters and directors are sticking to formulas when hesitant to experiment with their creative juices, and at the same time, big studios are playing it safe by adapting anything in sight. But while many movies crowd up the marquee like a group of regular students with satisfying GPAs, cinema has still been able to continue thanks to true poindexters of the art, those who craft experiences so fulfilling and basically perfect that the deconstruction of “the movies” seems to still be a myth. With films like Talk to Her, Superbad, and There Will Be Blood, »

First Two Trailers For ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’

17 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

There are some pretty great, and some pretty awful movie titles out there. From something long like Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, some titles just don’t work. Luckily, a few good screenwriters feel the same way, and bring us Hot Tub Time Machine.

The premise sounds pretty much like bliss once you hear the names involved. Four guys decide to bond on a ski trip and party hard all night on Red Bull and Vodka. They continue the night in the house’s hot tub, which transports them to 1986, where hi-jinks then ensue.

The aforementioned names involved are John Cusack, Craig Robinson (The Office, Zach and Miri Make a Porno), Clark Duke (Sex Drive, Superbad), and Rob Corddry (What Happens in Vegas, Harold and Kumar 2). The film basically looks like The Hangover meets Back to the Future, with a little »

Michael Cera Expects to Shoot 'Arrested Development' Movie In 2010

'Sometime next year we'll be shooting,' the 'Youth in Revolt' star reveals. 'I think that's realistic.'

West Hollywood, California — If not for "Arrested Development," it's hard to imagine there ever would have been a "Juno," a "Superbad" or the unlikely A-list Hollywood star that is Michael Cera. It seems only appropriate, then, that the 21-year-old's New Year's resolution is to finally return to the beloved Bluth family.

"I think sometime next year, hopefully, we'll be shooting," Cera revealed to MTV News on Thursday afternoon (December 17), giving renewed hope to the die-hard fans who've been pining for "Arrested Development: The Movie" since the groundbreaking comedy was yanked off the air. "I hope [we'll shoot in 2010]. I think that's realistic."

On January 8, Cera will release the endearingly quirky teen flick "Youth in Revolt," but after that, the in-demand star's schedule is wide open. »

'New Moon' Star Justin Chon Goes Backstage With Muse

15 December 2009 2:48 PM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

By Justin Chon

Hello. This is Justin Chon from "The Twilight Saga" (you may know me better as Eric). MTV invited to interview Muse and hang back stage at Kroq's annual Almost Acoustic Christmas concert. It was my first time being backstage at any concert, so I was extremely excited to see what it was all about. I have to say that I haven't had that much fun in a long long time.

I left my place at around 7 p.m. and headed over the the Gibson Amphitheater. When I got there, I was able to park in the VIP area because I was with the one and only MTV.

Once I got to the event, it was absolute mayhem. There were so many people in the backstage reception area. Famous people were just perusing about like nobody's business. I met up with the MTV crew and we started our little adventure. »

Part 4: From Michael Cera to Frank Black

Michael Cera Deluding awkward indie boys into thinking they'd get the girl since 2003

Before Michael Cera starred in mega-hits Juno and Superbad, the typical star of a Us teen movie was more likely to be the wonderfully horrible Steve Stifler from American Pie. Since Cera broke out from Arrested Development, lead teen males are now the types who wear newish Sonic Youth T-shirts, stare at their tennis shoes while muttering about Zooey Deschanel and pack as much charm as a destitute leprechaun. At first, Cera's emergence was a huge victory for the geek: 15-year-old Decemberists fans finally had a hero just like them! But then he went and made Year Zero, Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist and Paper Heart and we went back to our working on our poetry.

DVD Review: ‘Paper Heart’ Intriguingly Blurs Line Between Reality, Fiction

11 December 2009 12:02 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Some actors are so good that it’s easy to take their work for granted. Take Michael Cera, the veteran child actor-turned-unlikely teen heartthrob. From his breakout work in “Arrested Development,” to his crowd-pleasing performances in “Superbad” and “Juno,” Cera has created a comic persona as indelible as Woody Allen’s.

The sweetly neurotic vulnerability he exudes is so authentic, it’s easy for audiences to confuse the actor with the characters he regularly portrays. Is he a brilliant actor, or is he simply playing himself (which itself is no easy feat)? Such questions lie at the deceptive heart of Nicholas Jasenovec’s intriguing and infuriating romantic comedy.

DVD Rating: 3.0/5.0

The sleek, sophisticated bangs and straight hair have really turned her "fierce" knob up to 11. Hmmm... we wonder what Taylor Lautner's Abs thinks about his lady friend's makeover? Youth in Revolt Red Band Trailer: One More Time, With Cursing

8 December 2009 1:29 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We've seen two trailers for Youth in Revolt, and with a month left before the film finally opens (it was delayed from a fall open) we've now got a red band trailer. This clip follows much the same structure as the second trailer, only with a lot more dirty dialogue. That's not a bad thing, necessarily, as it's funny stuff. Check it out after the break. The primary drawback to this trailer is that it makes it sound a lot more like Superbad, but perhaps that's exactly the point. On one hand, the film has garnered some praise on the basis of Michael Cera's performance, which has been said to expand upon his now-typical screen persona. So you'd think that Dimension and the Weinsteins would be eager to emphasize that this is a different Cera than we've seen previously. On the other hand, cash is always good and the »

All New ‘Kick-Ass’ Poster Hits the Web

7 December 2009 12:00 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

With the release date of Lionsgate’s Kick-Ass drawing closer and closer, this is the time when the internet community gets treated to a slew of marketing strategies to increase awareness of the film. Much like 2008’s Dark Knight strategy, this plan involves hyping up the protagonist’s arch enemy, The Red Mist.

In the film, the crimson villain is portrayed by Superbad’s McLovin, known in the real world as Christopher Mintz-Plasse. In the books, Mist is a bad-ass, fast car driving, weed smoking, caped crusader who decides to team up with Kick-Ass before eventually showing his true colors.

The film is, of course, based on the current comic by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. In the book, a local teenager decides to take crime fighting into his own hands and don the title of “Kick-Ass” while he uncovers the true darkness in the city and gets the »

Producers Put 2007 Black List Comedy Pictures of You and Jay Baruchel’s Goon Into Play

7 December 2009 8:59 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Dave Gross and Jesse Shapira are busy. They're teaming with Youth in Revolt producer David Permut to make Pictures of You, the Joshua Friedlander script that was on the 2007 Black List. The teen-oriented romantic comedy will complement another funny picture Gross and Shapira have in the works: Goon, a hockey comedy written by Jay Baruchel and Superbad's Evan Goldberg. Variety reports on Pictures of You, saying that the film is set in a Florida seaside town and follows "a teenage boy who finds a lost camera on the beach. After developing the film, he ends up on a quest to find the girl of his dreams, whose picture was discovered inside the camera." Whimsical! Play this one in a double-feature with Amanda Seyfried's Letters to Juliet. Greg Mottola Reviews Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

In October, Juno/Up in the Air director Jason Reitman tweeted a mini-review of an early cut of Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which he called "a game changer for Edgar and the genre" and "the first all encompassing film of the joystick generation." Now Adventureland/Superbad director Greg Mottola has also seen the film, and has posted a mini-review on Twitter. Be very jealous of me. I’ve seen an entire cut of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. Edgar Wright has made a classic (again)! It’s amazing. ... I would say that Scott Pilgrim is the wittiest action movie you’ll ever see, but that’s just the half of it. ... Needless to say, Michael Cera is perfect. In fact, every single performance is incredible. You've got something special to look forward to. ...
