Mother and Child
Opens: 2010
Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington
Director: Rodrigo Garcia
Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.
Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.
The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not

The Last Airbender
Opens: July 2nd 2010
Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.
Analysis: Its been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan who started it as a household name with labels of a moodern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".
Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit cartoon series

Karl Urban Joins Red, McMahon is VP

Mania reports that the busy Karl Urban (currently trying to take a bite out of Paul Bettany as the heavy in another comic book adaptation, “Priest”) has just added to his schedule by joining the cast of Bruce Willis’ comic book movie “Red”. Urban will play a character name Cooper. Meanwhile, Mania confirms that Julian McMahon will indeed be playing the Vice President of the United States. Likely, McMahon’s character is the weasel that begins the cycle of violence when he orders the hit on Bruce Willis’ character, Paul Moses, a former CIA black ops killer who has since retired.
Robert Schwentke is directing the film, based on the comic book by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner. The cast is quite formidable, including Willis, Urban, McMahon, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Mary-Louise Parker, John C. Reilly, Brian Cox, Ernest Borgnine and Richard Dreyfuss. Yes, all these people signed up for

Paul Bettany is a busy guy at the moment with Legion coming out in the new year and this movie, ‘Priest’ in which he stars alonside Cam Gigndet, Maggie Q, Karl Urban, Lily Collins, Steven Moyer, Brad Dourif, and Christopher Plummer.
Priest is directed by Scott Stewart, the same chap who did Legion so I’m guessing that Bettany and he got on pretty well. Thanks to Collider.com for sharing the poster, they also give us the synopsis:
Priest tells the story of a warrior priest (Bettany) who disobeys Church law by teaming with a young sheriff (Cam Gigandet) and a beautiful priestess (Maggie Q) to track down a band of renegade vampires who have kidnapped the priest’s niece before they turn her into one of them. The film co-stars Karl Urban, Lily Collins, Steven Moyer, Brad Dourif and Christopher Plummer.
Priest is scheduled for release summer 2010. Click the poster to enlarge.

First Poster for Priest Starring Paul Bettany

If you look at some of the film’s Paul Bettany has done in the past several years: The Reckoning, The Da Vinci Code, Creation, Legion, and now Priest, the guy may have some interest in the inherent drama of the implications and applications of Christianity. I could be totally off-base with this assumption, but then again, the first poster for Priest features him with a tattoo of a crucifix on his face while hellfire burns around him. It’s possible that the film may not be the Pope’s favorite of 2010.
Priest has Bettany re-teaming with Legion director Scott Stewart in the story of a warrior priest (Bettany) who disobeys Church law by teaming with a young sheriff (Cam Gigandet) and a beautiful priestess (Maggie Q) to track down a band of renegade vampires who have kidnapped the priest’s niece before they turn her into one of them.

Director Robert Schwentke’s adaptation of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s “Red” already boasts an impressive lineup of stars including Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John C. Reilly and Mary-Louise Parker. However, a report has surfaced naming Karl Urban as the latest addition to the cast.
According to Mania.com, Urban will portray a character named “Cooper.” The report also states that Julian McMahon will play the Vice President of the United States and that Ernest Borgnine and Richard Dreyfuss have officially signed on to the film — reiterating an earlier report of their involvement.
Urban is well known among genre fans for his roles in “The Chronicles of Riddick”, “The Lord of the Rings” series and his turn as Doctor McCoy in last summer’s “Star Trek.” If the report is confirmed, then “Red” will be Urban’s second comic book related film of 2010 following the release of “Priest.

Folks in the UK can break out their calendars and clear a space for August 27, 2010 because The Playlist is reporting that’s the day Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is scheduled to hit theaters. However, the film is scheduled to hit France on August 18th. It’s possible that Universal could be staking out August 20th for the Us because they released Inglourious Basterds on the same weekend this year and it worked out pretty well. Of course, release dates are always subject to change, but if this date holds and also applies to the Us, Scott Pilgrim will have some interesting competition (provided other released dates hold as well). While nothing is currently holding August 27th in the Us, The Expendables is due a week before on August 13th, would go up against The Baster starring Jason Bateman and Priest starring Paul Bettany, and then The American

You may have seen this image before, at Screen Gems' teaser site for the film, but here is the official teaser one-sheet released today for the studio's big post-apocalyptic picture Priest . I dig the look, like the image is ingrained on a ragged novel's cover. And yes, the man you see, Paul Bettany, does have a giant crossed tattooed on his face - in fact, all of the Priests featured in the film do.
Scott Stewart recently wrapped production and is now in post. The film is set for an August 20 release, a week earlier than last reported. Click on the title link for a full synopsis.

Guess what sci-fi/action/thriller fans? We’ve got a double dose of awesome for you today. That’s right, we’re bringing not one, but two clips for you to geek out over. No thanks needed, it’s our pleasure to serve.
The first clip comes from the Paul Bettany and Dennis Quaid film, Legion. If you’ll recall from our previous coverage (including the Red Band trailer we shared back in August), Legion is the story of a diner full of people who attempt to fight off an apocalyptic army of angels sent by God to destroy humanity. Among the characters is the Archangel Michael (played by Bettany), who, for some reason which I hope the film will explain, decides to ignore God’s bidding and help save humanity instead. Dennis Quaid (looking craggier than ever) and Tyrese Gibson also star as two of the diner’s denizens

Dinner for Schmucks
Opens: July 23rd 2010
Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams
Director: Jay Roach
Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.
Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".
The question now lies not in the performers or director but the material itself and whether a Gallic comedy can

Breck Eisner to Direct ‘The Brood’ Remake

Breck Eisner (The Crazies, Sahara) will be helming a remake of The Brood, the 1979 horror film written and directed by David Cronenberg. The La Times unearthed this bit of news.
If you’ve been keeping count, Eisner was recently attached to the upcoming remake of The Creature from the Black Lagoon, but has since been replaced by Ridley Scott protegé Carl Rinsch.
What story could possibly justify the above picture? Hit the jump to find out…
The original film followed an unorthodox psychotherapist and his patients, who were subjected to a technique that explored their negative emotions and created physical manifestations of their grief, anger etc. in the form of welts and other disfigurements on their bodies.
One woman birthed disfigured children – rage beasts – who acted out her negative emotions as they grew more intense from the psychotherapist’s questioning. Horror ensued. No word on how or if the new

Director Shuffle On Some Horror Remakes

Oh, these pesky, horror remakes and the people who have to direct them. For some time, Breck Eisner (Sahara) was attached to direct the long-gestating Creature From The Black Lagoon remake. He then moved on, instead taking on the upcoming remake of Romero’s The Crazies. Now, according to the La Times, Carl Rinsch, the man who is set to direct 47 Ronin, is taking on the Creature project.
Eisner, meanwhile, has just been tapped to direct the remake of David Cronenberg’s 1979 film, The Brood. The film, with the new screenplay being written by Priest screenwriter Cory Goodman, centers on a woman who has a telepathic link to her murderous children.
What do you think of these choices? Are these films worth remaking at all? Are these the right choices for director on each? What would have been your thoughts had Peter Jackson ever gotten his vision of Creature From The Black Lagoon

Breck Eisner To Remake Cronenberg's The Brood

Breck Eisner has signed on to direct the remake of David Cronenberg's superb paedophobia chiller The Brood. The director's current project is The Crazies, a remake of George A. Romero's classic 1973 tale of the same name, but it appears one do-over isn't enough fr the ambitious helmer and he's set his sights on a Cronenberg classic as well.
The plotline for the 1979 original The Brood reads something like this: a man tries to uncover the unconventional therapy techniques used by a psychologist treating his institutionalized wife, while a series of brutal attacks committed by a brood of mutant children coincides with his investigation.
The script for the latest The Brood has been penned by Cory Goodman (scriptwriter of Paul Bettany's upcoming Priest) and there is no word yet as to what, if any, changes have been made to the story.

Crazies Director To Take On The Brood?

Breck Eisner loves remaking other directors work. He’s finished on George A. Romero’s re-dreaming (come on, it’s re-”something”, these days) of The Crazies and now, according to the L.A. Times, he’s seeking a re-birthing of David Cronenberg’s The Brood.
It has been widely reported Eisner was attached to The Creature From The Black Lagoon (yes, another remake), but now it appears he’s been tempted by a Cronenberg masterpiece. The Brood is a highly disturbing film about a “psychoplasmics” – an imaginary form of psychotherapy (thank God) in which patients of Oliver Reed’s doctor manifest their traumas. This leads Samantha Eggar to produce some telepathic monsters (it’s not a nice film).
It is very hard to imagine how Breck Eisner can adapt a genre of filmmaking so unique to its creator. “Body horror” is so specific to Canadian director David Cronenberg, if another example is made,

We reported earlier in the week that Breck Eisner, director of the impressive looking remake of George Romero's The Crazies, had jumped the Creature From the Black Lagoon ship. Where did he jump to? Seemingly to another remake, this time of David Cronenberg's 1979 The Brood. Cory Goodman (Priest) is on the script. The Brood as we currently know it, is kind of uniquely Cronenberg (Cronenbergian?). [Spoilers ahead] It features Oliver Reed as a professor of 'psychoplasmics": a psychotherapy that causes its subjects to physically manifest their traumas. One patient with an abusive father develops welts on his body, while Samantha Eggar asexually gestates mutant children from the outside of her body, that telepathically act out her anger. One of the film's most famous and lingering images is that of Eggar licking clean a newborn foetus. Cronenberg wrote the film during a custody battle with his ex-wife.So body horror,
