Out of China comes the horror movie The Matrimony, a tale of love and death and being with your loved one after you've experienced death. It's a premise we've seen before, and naturally so: ghosts are usually dead people who have more left to do on earth, and why not be about missing your loved ones? The Matrimony tells the tale of Junchu (Leon Lai), a man who was ready and willing to marry his beloved Manli (Fan Bing Bing). On the outset of the story, we see Manli riding her bike through the streets, and Junchu waiting to greet her. As soon as the two lock eyes from across the street, Manli is run over by a car or two, ending her life.

Matrimony (2011)
As a fan, first and foremost, of genre cinema I cannot overstate the importance of Tartan in bringing Asian horror to the West. If you think of all the important Asian horror flicks over the past decade or so chances are Tartan released them in the UK and Us. Of course, most of these ended up getting a shitty remake but that is an aside to the fact. This made it all the more upsetting when in 2008 Tartan went into administration. Fortunately their library of movies was purchased the Palisades Media Group and Palisades Tartan was born.
The latest release from the new company is Matrimony, or The Matrimony as it is also known, a Chinese movie from 2007 that adds a little period piece action to the traditional style of Asian ghost story. Don’t worry though, this isn’t a long-haired style ghost story that has been done to death,...

Matrimony is a dramatic, supernatural horror film made in mainland China in 2007, but Palisades Tartan / Asia Extreme is bringing it to the states on DVD & Blu-ray on July 26th 2011. The film is quite beautiful. Too beautiful for it's own good in some ways. The beauty of it immediately raises your expectations. At it's core it's a standard, but very well made ghost story. Sure, it lacks originality, but that does not mean it's not a great film to watch.
"Matrimony" is directed by Hua-Tao Teng and set in 1930's China. It centers around Junchu (Leon Lai). A filmmaker who loses his love and almost his will to live. On the way to a rendezvous with Junchu where he plans on asking her to marry him, his lover Manli (Bingbing Fan) is struck by 2 cars in a horrible accident (and even more horrible use of...

For the fifth year in a row, October gets a little creepier and scarier when the Spooky Movie Film Festival rolls into the Washington, D.C. area on Oct. 21-25 for six terrifying nights of of feature films and shorts.
Every year, Spooky Movie redefines the very definition of “horror” by presenting an absolutely unique selection films from all over the world. This year the bloody offerings range from backwoods horror comedies to documentaries to Norwegian and British zombie flicks to Australian monster movies and more.
Most exciting, however, is the return of the father of the splatter movie himself: Herschell Gordon Lewis, who will be screening his latest gore extravaganza, the diabolical The Uh-Oh Show!. This is Lewis’ first gross-out flick in seven years and is an unholy combination of blood, social satire and fairy tales. Bad Lit’s seen it and thinks it’s a real hoot and a holler.

I woke up with a serious case of Cannes Envy this morning. There's no way around unwanted feelings so you plunge in them to get to the other side. That's the way to do it, right? Or that's the way Nathaniel (c'est moi) does it. Maybe that's the masochist's way? So herewith... random thoughts on Cannes photos, fashions, and tweets from people I was exceptionally jealous of all day. Cuz they're... you know... there. In the thick of it.
Please note: If y'all don't start commenting soon, we're likely to take a long summer hiatus and see you ungrateful beyootches in October when Oscar buzz heats up. Comments are like food. Feed the insatiable Film Experience Beast!
