[Update: Forget about the crappy snapshot poster that was taken back in March. Imagi’s creative director Felix Ip has posted a better quality version of it and a new illustration at his blog site. Awesome design! The only difference from the old version is the year of release has shifted from 2010 to 2011. I look forward to seeing the rest of the team in their own poster.]
Over the past weekend at the 2009 Tokyo International Anime Fair, someone who attended the event has taken a snapshot picture of a poster on display for Imagi Studios’ Gatchaman from the Tatsunoko’s booth and posted it up on a Japanese Gatchaman fan’s blog. It offers a first CG-fied look at Joe Asakura, the second-in-command of the superhero ninja team and although I’m not all too familiar with the original series, I must say the character design on him looks really cool. For another take on the character design, go here.
As far as I’m aware, it seems the current status of the action animated film remains uncertain. There were reports a few months back on the financial problems affecting Imagi and there is still no official word of a director onboard after Kevin Munroe (Tmnt) dropped out during production last year. Personally, my fingers are crossed

It looks like “Gatchaman” is still on track for its 2010 release date from Imagi Studios. Debuting a new teaser this past weekend at Anime Expo 2009, Imagi gave attendees a first look at footage from the upcoming CGI feature film.
The 45-second teaser doesn’t reveal much about the film’s plot, which is being written by Paul Dini (“Batman: The Animated Series,” “Lost”), but does provide the first image of main villain Galactor, as well as a group shot of the entire Gatchaman team both in and out of costume.
Alongside the images, the trailer sums up the film’s theme with cryptic juxtaposed text, “A world in chaos, an alien evil, a lone warrior is found, earth’s last hope, five shall rise, ‘Gatchaman.’
Set in the not-too-distant future, “Gatchaman” sees a world on the verge of environmental and technological catastrophe attacked by an evil alien menace. Its only

Imagi Studios has debuted a new teaser trailer for "Gatchaman" at the 2009 Anime Expo which took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center over the weekend, and a bootleg version of the teaser has been made available for viewing pleasure. Providing more sneak peek to the anime adaptation if compared to the previous clip, the teaser explains that the world is in chaos because of one alien evil, Galactor.
Amidst the chaos comes a lone warrior who is described to be Earth's last hope for survival. Together with a group of teenagers recruited to form a bird theme superhero ninja team, he fights the menace of the technologically advanced alien and denies him of his attempt to take control of the Earth's natural resources.
Based on the successful Japanese anime franchise created by Tatsuo Yoshida in 1972, "Gatchaman" is directed by "Tmnt" helmer Kevin Munroe. It is still unclear who will

Imagi Studios was playing the new teaser for "Gatchaman" at the 2009 Anime Expo in Los Angeles this weekend. One fan was able to record the teaser off of the screen, but since there is so much noise around, he was only able to capture the video. Check it out below. "Gatchaman" originated in Japan in the early 1970s as the television series "Science Ninja Team Gatchaman." Aired in the Us as "Battle of the Planets" and "G-Force," it soon became a widely popular syndicated TV series. The film is set in a future world grappling with environmental and technological issues. The story focuses on five reluctant heroes whose remarkable genetic code makes them Earth's only hope of defeating extra-terrestrial invaders. Kevin Munroe (Tmnt) is directing "Gatchman," which has yet to set a release date.

The development process for Gatchaman, a feature film version of the popular anime, has been a little shaky. We saw a preview clip last fall, but the movie doesn't even have a director, now that Tmnt helmer Kevin Munroe is off the project.
But Imagi Entertainment is forging ahead with the movie, apparently, having debuted another new image from the film at the 2009 Tokyo INternational Toy Fair. According to the image at Twitchfilm.net, the movie will be released in 2010-- again, interesting given that they don't have a director.
Check out the full-size image over there, of Jose Asakura, and see if it gets you excited enough to overlook the fact that there's no director for this film.
