14 December 2009 2:50 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Much as we'd like to, we can't always get to Every festival that happens. That's why we have friends like Ari Lehman, who travels extensively and who can bring us a blow-by-blow of the events as they happened. Here, then, is Ari's exclusive journal from his recent trip to Spain, where his band, First Jason, played the Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei, which is a really long name for one hell of a festival dedicated to horror movies and music. So without further ado...

Day 1 -

As we looked out of the airplane window, Barcelona lay sprawled out before us like an overflowing Pirate's chest that had been tipped into the shiny blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. I looked up to the north where I saw a dark, craggy mountaintop looming in the distance. »

Behind The Mask Blu-Ray Arrives

8 December 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

This one kind of slipped under the radar, but Anchor Bay Entertainment has just released a Blu-Ray edition of Scott Glosserman's Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon today, December 8th. If we hadn't been searching around Amazon, we might never have discovered this low key release. While the Amazon listing doesn't offer a glimpse at the back cover art, we imagine all the special features from the DVD release were carted over for this addition as well. Oddly enough, other Anchor Bay titles that comes up as recommendations that we didn't realize had Blu-Ray editions include Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer , While She Was Out , Red Mist , The Alphabet Killer and Walled In . They're all economically priced at around $9.99, so this might be the time to upgrade! »

Fresh Release: Ryan Shore's Rex Steele (and other short scores)

3 October 2009 2:07 AM, PDT | Daily Film Music Blog | See recent Daily Film Music Blog news »

Composer Ryan Shore is one of the rising stars of the film music world. Thanks to his collaborations with MovieScoreMedia, more and more of his scores are now available to the public. Headspace, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer and the Macedonian movie Senki (Shadows) are just a number of titles available from their catalogue. In the summer, Msm released a three-way collection of jazzy scores from Ryan's career: Numb, Kettle of Fish and Coney Island Baby are just pure fun to listen to. Now a new collection is available, collecting together a wide range of short film scores from Ryan's earlier days. The award winning animated shorts include the much-requested Rex Steele: Nazi Smasher, the Claymation short Shadowplay and the dark comedy Cadaverous. What connects together these scores apart from being written by the same composer is that you'd never think they were written for short films - they could underscore »

31 Days of Horror: Jack Brooks Monster Slayer

2 October 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer (2007) Synopsis: After a young Jack Brooks watches his family get massacred by a monster, an understandably troubled and angered Jack grows up to be an asshole of a plumber with serious rage issues.  In the course of fixing a professor's plumbing, he becomes embroiled in a battle against a demon capable of possessing others where he finds his true calling - kicking monster ass. Killer Scene: When it's down to Jack to fight his way through the school to rescue the trapped students, he takes it upon himself to bash some heads in.  He loves hitting people.  With his firsts or with objects.  He hits people with pipes, chairs, and in the best kill, a fire extinguisher.  Whammy. KillSheet Violence: The film kills around 12 or so people, which is good, but some of them occur off-screen and most aren't too bloody.  In non-fatal violence, Jack does like to punch a couple of suckas »

Set in a small town in Poland but shot in Canada, the new horror flick from “Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer” director Jon Knautz is called “The Shrine”, one of those “American teens go missing while backpacking through Europe” cautionary tale. Plus, ritual sacrifices and creepy Polish country bumpkins. You know, the usual. Check out the teaser trailer and images from the movie, which is set for 2010. The Shrine Teaser Trailer

9 September 2009 5:29 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

When I first saw the poster for The Shrine, a new serious-toned feature about the occult, it quickly earned a mental note. The poster's ominous imagery (as seen bel0w) perfectly tapped the exploration of a foreign-born religio-horror without giving anything away. And though I later discovered that the film is set in a fictional village in Poland, I couldn't shake the notion that it was tapping into a similar fear of ancient practices as expressed in Song of Kali, the popular Calcutta-set horror novel that creeps me out more than a year later.* But I was thrown off by the film's directror, Jon Knautz, best known for helming Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer, a tongue-in-cheek 2007 B-movie co-starring Robert Englund. A new teaser trailer has arrived, and while it isn't a flawless counterpart to the poster on par with the one-two knockout of The House of the Devil, it offers a »

Yes, the same Jon Knautz who did the excellent Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer. This one looks like straight up horror, and I have to say I was a bit worried.. but it's looking mighty fine! Especially that scene of the bug or contraption thing going over the supine body.. yes!

First report and exclusive pics: Jack Brooks gang’s The Shrine

27 August 2009 9:33 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

If you—like so many horror fans—were pleasantly surprised at just how cheeky and energetically messy last year’s Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer was, you’ve probably been wondering when the lads behind that creature-filled Canadian flick would strike again. Well, gentle readers, wonder no more: The Brookstreet Pictures team of Jon Knautz, Trevor Matthews and Matt Brulotte are in the thick of production on their follow-up shocker, The Shrine. They passed on a few exclusive bloody detail photos, which you can see below.

The Shrine treads darker terrain than the relatively lighthearted Jack Brooks, telling the tale of a group of journalists running afoul of a homicidal cult and the blood-hungry beast they worship in a small, decidedly sinister Polish village. Aaron Ashmore (twin brother of X-men’s Shawn Ashmore, from Smallville and the upcoming The Thaw) takes the lead, and once again Knautz takes the scripting (with Brendan Moore) and directing duties, »

Exclusive: Director Jon Knautz on 'Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer 2'

We sat down with director Jon Knautz this weekend as he took a break from shooting his latest thriller The Shrine in Toronto. We'll have our full report on The Shrine soon, but for now, read on to see what Jon has to say about a possible sequel to his monster hit  Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer. FEARnet: The film you're shooting now is The Shrine, but I think a lot of genre fans would have expected Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer 2 to be your next film. Jon Knautz: Jack Brooks 2 was something that was always sitting in development for us [but] it wasn't necessarily the film we were going to make next.  We didn't plan on that, we just figured because Jack Brooks seemed to get a pretty decent »

An Exclusive Set Visit to The Shrine

17 August 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

It was hot, it was humid, pouring rain and the clouds were thunder-happy. Fitting, I suppose, as my visit to the set of The Shrine in Toronto this month was beginning its primary filming in what I was told would be in the torture room . As I was nearing the address, I saw a very busy high school and out having a smoke was director Jon Knautz on a break. I knew I had arrived at the latest Brookstreet Pictures film. If Brookstreet sounds familiar it is because this is the team that was behind 2007's successful Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer with Knautz and long time friend Trevor Matthews (Jack Brooks) reuniting for The Shrine . The pair relocate their imagination from Canada to a small Polish village called Alvaina where a cult still practices the barbarism of human sacrifice. »

Canadian director Jon Knautz burst into international view with Jack Brooks Monster Slayer and with that film’s release still fresh the entire team behind Jack Brooks is already hard at work on their sophomore feature, the much more serious-minded The Shrine.  I had the chance to visit the set earlier this week and though it was just Day Two of the shoot they were already hard at it, shooting in a large scale underground temple set.  Nothing like getting the blood out of the way early ...
