2012 and how good viral marketing can go bad

13 November 2009 4:10 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Disaster movie 2012 inspired panic in the States with Nasa having to reassure Americans that the world wasn't about to end. Is movie viral marketing getting too clever for its own good?

When Columbia Pictures launched a marketing campaign for 2012 – the latest disaster movie from serial Earth molester Roland Emmerich, where the planet, played by America, is set for impending doom – they didn't do it by halves.

First, there was a teaser trailer showing a tsunami crashing over the Himalayas. The Earth was going to end in 2012, it said, and the world's governments aren't doing enough to prepare us. Search "2012", it said, for "the truth" (the "truth" turned out to be over 1,000 real websites and 175 real books obsessed with 2012 as the end of time).

Then, there was a fake website – the "Institute for Human Continuity" – which consisted of a screen stating that for 25 years they'd been assessing threats to the continuation of mankind, »

First Look at Jessica Alba in 'Machete' Found

4 November 2009 10:15 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Jessica Alba is listed among the actors tapped to star in Robert Rodriguez's "Machete", and the first look at her in character as Sartana has made its rounds. Brought into attention by Coming Soon, the first look came in the form of a capture of the film's character poster which is being displayed at the American Film Market.

The part of Sartana places the leading lady of "The Love Guru" as an immigration customs enforcement agent who is tracking the titular character down. She will be starring opposite Danny Trejo who takes on the role of Machete in the movie which cast ensemble also consists of Robert De Niro, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal and Lindsay Lohan.

"Machete" centers its story around a renegade former Mexican Federale named Machete. Roaming the streets of Texas after a shakedown from drug lord Torrez, he reluctantly takes an offer from spin doctor Benz to assassinate corrupt Senator McLaughlin. »

How Does Jim Carrey Playing Multiple Roles in 'A Christmas Carol' Benefit the Film?

26 October 2009 1:22 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The idea of one actor playing multiple characters in a film isn't a new one even though many people begin and end the conversation with Eddie Murphy for his performances in films such as Nutty Professor and Norbit all while forgetting the comedy he brought us in Coming to America.

Before Murphy we had the likes of Mel Brooks in History of the World and Spaceballs, Alec Guiness in the fantastic Kind Hearts and Coronets and Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove. Outside of Murphy it seems only Mike Myers has endured the same kind of ill treatment, primarily for taking the joke to the point it wasn't funny any longer (debatable) in the Austin Powers films and then dropping the bomb that was The Love Guru.

Looking at the performances listed above I am reminded of some classic films as well as a couple that missed the mark, but we »

This week in theaters finds some late-to-the-party summertime silliness lining up alongside a couple of titles arriving three weeks early for Halloween. Elsewhere the arthouse scene provides a strong showing with Chilean maids, Filipino mothers and some good ol' New York psychos.

"Adela"

The only person who's worked harder in the Filipino film industry over the past three years than director Adolfo Alix Jr., who's made 11 features since 2006, is his leading lady Anita Linda, who has made 13 in the same time and plays the title role in this minimalist mood piece as stand-in for an entire nation's embittered resilience. Captured in a series of long takes, the film follows our eponymous heroine on a mostly silent odyssey, casually aiding neighbors and strangers alike as she wistfully celebrates her 80th birthday in the shantytown where she lives. »

1999: A Year In Review (Part One)

7 October 2009 9:07 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Many films come out every year with critics and fans alike, compiling lists of their bests and worsts. There are also many films that fall between the cracks, only to be discovered years later. Many critics believe that one of the best years in cinema was 1939, when Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz were released alongside many other classic gems.

Personally, I’ve always felt that 1999 was an epic year for movies, providing us with so many interesting films. In fact, 1999 was such a good year for movies that even some of the bad ones are still worth watching!

So, please sit back and put your memory caps on as Screen Rant takes on a retrospective of 1999 in the world of film.

In 1999, the world was a very different place. We were on the cusp of a new millennium and 9/11 was something that nobody - not even »

1 October 2009 8:05 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Jessica Alba is in talks to be part of the third installment to the Meet the Parents films, Little Fockers. A majority of the original cast has already been confirmed to return to their proper roles with Paul Weitz directing.

The last film that Alba participated in was the Mike Meyers 2008 dud The Love Guru. Jessica Alba 'Meets the Fockers': Le sigh

30 September 2009 3:18 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

As we reported earlier today, Jessica Alba is set to join the third installment of the Meet the Parents series. What's that I hear? A collective groan? I couldn't agree more. Considering Alba's career choices as of late (i.e. The Love Guru and Good Luck Chuck), I can't imagine she'll be bringing in the laughs. It's a risky move for a film that has already has high chances of becoming an epic fail, though not in the box office sense. No, it'll probably fare well in that department. But, judging by the slapstick route the sequel, Meet the Fockers, »

Shocker: Jessica Alba to play “attractive pharmaceutical rep” in ‘Little Fockers’

30 September 2009 9:48 AM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Longtime hot stuff Jessica Alba is in talks to join the cast of Little Fockers, the third entry in the Meet the Parents series.

Starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, Little Fockers will place the Focker family in precarious situations using their new kids as set ups for hopefully new jokes. Alba will play a pharmaceutical rep “whose looks wreak havoc on male characters.”

I recently caught up with Ms. Alba who just completed work on Robert Rodriguez’s Machete. I asked her what she would hope to bring to the new role.

“Well, first off, I’m just in talks. I haven’t signed anything yet but I hope to soon. Basically, I’m just going to show up, look hot and walk around a little bit. It’s a role seemingly catered for me especially with all the pharmaceuticals and stuff.”

Jessica Alba Might Be Dealing with Some Little Fockers

30 September 2009 9:35 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Recently we saw Jessica Alba in the trailer premiere for the ensemble romantic comedy Valentine's Day.  And while there's no doubt she's still got the looks and a bit of charm to keep some of us interested, the trailer confirmed that it's another in a long line of generic and dull career choices for Alba. She just might have a chance to turn that all around as Variety reports that Alba is in talks to join the third installment of the Meet the Parents films which as far as we know is still being called Little Fockers.  Perhaps she'll get the chance to show her more comedic side which unfortunately didn't ever show up in The Love Guru. Alba's role doesn't sound all that great as "an attractive pharmaceutical rep whose looks wreak havoc on male characters in the story,” but apparently this is a key role alongside the film's »

"Little Fockers" is likely to have Jessica Alba among its cast. The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz Blog has got the scoop that the 28-year-old actress is in negotiations to take on a key role in the third installment of "Meet the Parents" franchise.

Should the deal is made, the actress who portrays Sue Storm in the last two "Fantastic Four" movies will play an attractive pharmaceutical rep who makes all the male characters in the story smitten by her. She'll join the cast that include Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner and Owen Wilson.

"Little Fockers" will revolve around the children of Greg Focker and Pam Byrnes. De Niro and Jane Rosenthal are serving as producers. Alba gets Fockered

She's given horror and comic book movies a good try, but is Jessica Alba's real calling in comedy? Not if you take The Love Guru or Good Luck Chuck as any sort of sign, but that isn't stopping her from putting laughs on the line once more. You gotta admire her fortitude. And her superior posterior. Alba is in talks to join the scarcely necessary but sure-to-be-profitable sequel The Little Fockers, completing the Meet The Parents/Fockers trilogy. Outraged Villagers Crash Julia Roberts' Private Eat, Pray, Love Temple

Julia Roberts was supposed to be the one who restored Hollywood's reputation in India, bringing her tasteful adaptation of Eat, Pray, Love this week to a country still stung by the West's one-two punch of The Love Guru and Slumdog Millionaire. She had been held in high esteem there since a recent visit to the Taj Majal (bindi spot and all!), and her tale of a woman finding herself through travel and Hindu spirituality would unite cultures, heal souls and sow respect for years to come. Timberlake's on Facebook

9 September 2009 | Cineman.ch/en | See recent Cineman.ch/en news »

Justin Timberlake will play one of the lead parts in a film dedicated to the birth of Facebook, directed by the brilliant David Fincher. The music superstar will play Sean Parker, Facebook's current president and co-founder of Napster. After his parts in, variously, a flop ("The Love Guru", voted worst film of 2008), a cursed masterpiece ("Southland Tales") and a number of under-the-radar films (such as "Alpha Dog"), Timberlake's participation in "The Social Network" will probably raise his actor's status. Even more so now that David Fincher, considered one of the best filmmakers in the world, is tapped to direct. His filmography speaks for itself: "Se7en", "The Game", "Zodiac", "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", "Fight Club". While it is currently in pre-production and shouldn't start shooting before next month, "The Social Network" is already one of 2010's most awaited fil... »

Hindus Worried About Keanu Reeves Movie

8 September 2009 3:06 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hindu leaders in America are concerned Keanu Reeves' reported portrayal of the incarnation of Lord Vishnu in a new movie will be another awful Hollywood depiction of their religion, belief system and gods.

Top Hindus are still reeling from the way Mike Myers poked fun at their religion in The Love Guru, and they fear Reeves' new film Hanuman, in which he'll play Rama, will be another misinformed film about Hinduism.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed tells WENN, "Hindus are concerned. If the makers of this proposed movie intend to base the storyline on the epic Ramayana and make references to it or portray Hindu gods/goddesses in the movie, we would urge the makers to stay true to the story and the spirit of the timeless epic and other Hindu scriptures."

Gary Oldman is also reportedly part of the cast, as is Lagaan star Aamir Khan, who is slated to play Hanuman.

Shooting on the Chuck Russell film is expected to start towards the end of this year in Rajasthan, India.

Zed, who is president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, adds, "Ramayana is a highly revered scripture of Hinduism. Hollywood is welcome to make a movie about Ramayana but the final product should be the true depiction of it and not a fantasised or a re-imagined version to fit the Hollywood machine, which was likely to hurt the Hindu sentiments.

"Moreover, as Hinduism is largely misunderstood outside India, the distortion would add to the confusion. Hinduism is the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion adherents and a rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken lightly.

"Ramayana is an integral part of Hinduism and was held in such reverence that Hindus believe that simply reading/hearing of it (sic) showered blessings upon the reader/listener."

Ramayana is an ancient Sanskrit scripture, which explores various themes, including human existence and concept of dharma, among other leading religious and philosophical issues. »

The Daily Show's John Oliver and Rory Albanese Get Movie Deal

7 August 2009 2:31 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The Hollywood Reporter writes that John Oliver and Rory Albanese, who write for Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, have received a blind script deal from Paramount. The two will be begin work on a comedy project that isn't completely fleshed out yet, Oliver says:

We pitched it as being the most critically acclaimed and profitable movie in Hollywood history. They were particularly interested in the second part of that. As to exactly what it will be, I think it's far too early for those trifling details.

Oliver most recently had a role in The Love Guru and also starred in his own hour-long comedy special, John Oliver: Terrifying Times. Albanese is an executive producer on The Daily Show and also acted as a contributing producer for the 2006 Academy Awards and has won two Emmy Awards. Albanese jokingly claimed he wasn't aware of the magnitude of the deal he and Oliver struck. »

Justin Timberlake Still Acting in The Open Road

4 August 2009 3:15 PM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

While Justin Timberlake has already established himself as something of an indispensable satellite member of the SNL cast, his forays into the realm of film acting have been limited to lower-profile affairs, serving mixed results. His notices for Alpha Dog were good, he emerged relatively unscathed playing a Quebecois hockey player in Mike Myers' critically trounced The Love Guru, and bit turns in Black Snake Moan and Southland Tales made no lasting imprint. But Timberlake clearly wants to break on through to the other side, and what the Prince of Pop wants (a shot at), the Prince of Pop gets. Unfortunately for him, the chance to pull on a pair of green tights and save the world slipped through his fingers.

But there's always The Open Road. »
