Cow Films, 'V' On ABC And Sesame Street In Today's Twitter-Wood

4 November 2009 4:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Cow films appear to be the official successor to the unseen prequels tag that was trending on Twitter earlier this week. Both Jon Favreau and Steve Agee made contributions today, while John August offered some criticism of ABC's new "V" series and Brian Lynch commemorated the 40th birthday of "Sesame Street."

In the "Twilight" neighborhood of Twitter-Wood, meanwhile, Peter Facinelli discussed an accidental oversleeping incident that resulted in a late arrival on-set. David Slade responded by thanking him for not ever being late during "Eclipse." Check out all of those tweets after the jump. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 4, 2009.

The Week in Film: What will fly at the box office? And what won't?

23 October 2009 2:13 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Editor's note: This week we're welcoming Mike Wong on board to write our weekly movie column.

Another week, another set of movies. Hard to believe it’s already nearly November when the Oscar-bait starts being dangled, and unless you didn’t see any movies last week, I’m sorry to say it’s a good week to stay home or do something not movie related.

The first of the wide releases this week is Amelia starring the swanky Hilary Swank in a movie that almost no one was waiting for. This biopic about Amelia Earhart, the first female pilot to cross the Atlantic, seems to have flown out of the Hollywood machine with every cliché and formulaic fixture intact. Currently scoring a 22% on Rottentomatoes.com, I’ll wager that it’ll probably experience some serious turbulence in the box office.

Simon Pegg Testifies, Shannon Elizabeth Kisses A Zombie And 'Sweet Valley High' In Today's Twitter-Wood

24 September 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Simon Pegg happily tweeted about the publicity he hopes to see "How to Lose Friends & Alienate People" get in the U.S. now that an on-set burglary has resulted in a trial. If his co-star Megan Fox wasn't enough to get the film some attention, he predicts that his testimony will be.

One film that's been getting loads of Twitter attention this week has been "Zombieland," which everyone seems to have been invited to see. Shannon Elizabeth can be counted among those invitees and gets today's Twitter Pic of Day vote with the cutest zombie kiss you'll see this week. Check it out below along with Rumer Willis' backstage shot of a Govt. Mule concert, what Taylor Lautner has in common with a roller coaster and what Richard Kelly wants to see in Diablo Cody's "Sweet Valley High" movie. New Writers for DC's Shazam & DreamWorks' Rainbow Bridge

20 August 2009 1:04 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

A couple of new screenwriter updates today. Warner Brothers has hired former actor Billy Birch and DC Comics writer Geoff Johns to kick-start and co-write a new version of the Shazam! movie that never got off the ground. Birch is the sixth writer to take a crack at adapting the character Captain Marvel following William Goldman (The Princess Bride), Bryan Goluboff (The Basketball Diaries), Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow (Garfield) and John August (Big Fish, The Nines). Last we heard in back in January, the project was dead, but apparently Get Smart's Peter Segal is still attached to direct and is waiting for the new script. In other news, Spielberg's new DreamWorks has hired Oscar winning screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin (Ghost, Jacob's Ladder, The Time Traveler's Wife) to write an English remake of the 2002 Japanese cult hit Resurrection, which has tentatively been re-titled to Rainbow Bridge. John August Adapting 'How I Became a Famous Novelist'

4 August 2009 12:49 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

A great announcement tonight from one of the most beloved screenwriters in Hollywood. John August has optioned Steve Hely's novel "How I Became a Famous Novelist" and will adapt and potentially direct the project. August, who is finishing up screenplays for Preacher and Dark Shadows, also previously wrote Go, Charlie's Angels, Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Corpse Bride. He broke into directing in 2007 with The Nines but hasn't slated any other directorial projects since. While he does have a lot of good scripts in the works, I'm excited to see him take on a more personal project like this once again! Description from Amazon: "Biting, hilarious and improbably affectionate, comedy writer Hely's debut skewers the literary world with a sendup of the quest to write the Great American Novel. Words are Pete Tarslaw's thing, and after watching a bestselling novelist prattle on about the truth, his calling, »

John August on How I Became a Famous Novelist

3 August 2009 8:48 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

John August is a screenwriter I've been following for the last decade. He broke onto the scene with a spec script titled Go, which was directed for the screen by Doug Liman (a film I highly recommend). Since then August has written a bunch of adaptations and remakes, mostly in association with director Tim Burton (Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride). He made a fantastic directorial debut with an original independent sci-fi mystery drama The Nines, which was a hit at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, but flew virtually under the radar of most (I also recommend this film, although I'll admit that it has gotten a polarizing response). I've been waiting and hoping for August to journey behind the camera once again, but his much in demand screenwriting duties have kept him away. He's producing Prince of Persia, wrote Preacher, and is also attached to Burton's Frankenweenie »

Ryan Reynolds boards 'Buried' thriller

25 June 2009 9:55 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Ryan Reynolds, who's currently onscreen in "The Proposal," is set to star in Rodrigo Cortes' upcoming indie thriller "Buried," according to Variety.

Chris Sparling wrote the script, which centers on a civilian contractor who's kidnapped and awakens in the Iraqi desert with only a phone, a candle and a knife.

Reynolds has been celebrating quite the career boost recently. The "Van Wilder" star delivered some solid performances in decent films, including "The Nines," "Definitely, Maybe" and "Adventureland."

Reynolds also played Wade Wilson in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," and he's already set to play the lead in the upcoming "Deadpool" spinoff.

As a side note, I found Reynolds very refreshing alongside Sandra Bullock in "The Proposal." This guy's got a solid future ahead of him. »

Ryan Reynolds Gets Buried Alive

25 June 2009 6:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

He might grab paychecks for romantic fluff like Definitely, Maybe and The Proposal, but Ryan Reynolds is definitely doing what he can to keep things fresh too. He's got his Deadpool gig, was obsessed with The Nines, and got busy with vamp fighting in Blade: Trinity. But now he's getting buried alive, which should take him to a whole new realm of cinema.

Variety reports that he will star in a new film called Buried, which was written by Chris Sparling and will be directed by Rodrigo Cortes. The film will focus on "a civilian contractor who's kidnapped in Iraq and awakens buried in a coffin in the desert, armed only with a cell phone, a candle, and a knife." Are they sure this is Buried? It sounds quite MacGyver to me, and as you know, there is a big-screen to-do on the way.

Anyway, Reynolds has been pretty successful in his career thus far, »

Second Trailer For Shane Acker's 9

20 May 2009 1:11 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

A brand new trailer is online for 9, the animated fantasy brought to us by producers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov. Like Terminator Salvation, but with rag dolls, the story looks at a post-apocalyptic world where a band of toys, given the spark of life by a scared scientist before his death, are left to fight the evil machines overtaking the world in order to save civilization.Starring Elijah Wood as dolly number 9, the cast also includes the vocal stylings of Jennifer Connelly, Crispin Glover, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer and John C. Reilly. The trailer is as explosive as any action movie, but with a touch of the Burton twisted aesthetic and Bekmambetov's signature gloom obviously influencing director Shane Acker's final product. This is not to be confused with Rob Marshall's Nine, Ryan Reynolds starrer The Nines or upcoming Peter Jackson-produced alien movie District 9. Just so you know. »

John August Talks ‘The Remnants’ And Webonomics

30 January 2009 3:26 PM, PST | Tubefilter.tv | See recent Tubefilter News news »

John August’s screenwriting credits go on and on: Big Fish, Corpse Bride, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are just a few. His first feature as a director, The Nines, was made in 2007. Now he’s joined the ranks of web series creators. August’s The Remnants, shot during the writer’s strike, caused a stir when it was posted to Vimeo a few weeks ago. Clips of the show had been previously uploaded, whetting our appetites for more of this mysterious apocalyptic comedy. But we’ll have to keep on pining, at least for the foreseeable future, since The Remnants hasn’t acquired the sponsorship necessary to bring it to the web as a full series. August recently wrote about The Remnants on his blog, sharing details and specifics you don’t often get to see. I asked him to elaborate on his analysis of the experience for Tubefilter. »

John August To Write Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’

22 January 2009 10:26 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

It’s been confirmed that John August (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish) is going to write the screenplay for the upcoming Tim Burton produced Frankenweenie. The film is based on Burton’s 1984 live-action short film that he made while he was a film school student.

Surprisingly, this version will not be live-action but done in the Burton-favored style of stop-motion animation And will be filmed in 3D. But what’s most surprising is that it will be in black and white, like the original.

A modern black and white, stop-motion, 3D film? Sounds interesting. In case you haven’t heard of Frankenweenie before, the basic plot is the story of a man who brings his dog back to life after it is killed by a car.

The project will be produced by Burton himself, although he won’t be directing - no word as of yet who will direct the film. »

John August Scripting Both Preacher and Frankenweenie

22 January 2009 9:13 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

John August is that rare thing in the arts. He’s an established professional with a back catalogue of accomplished works who we can still single out as one to watch. For my money, August’s work just keeps getting better and better, and his directorial debut The Nines was like a second debutantes ball for him (I was going to say “second coming out”, but in that case it would have been at least his third).

He’s similarly rare in his candidness, offering a very well written and well read blog which offers not only updates on his work, but technical and advice on the craft on screenwriting. In his latest post, he has confirmed EW’s scoop that he is scripting the feature film adaptation of Preacher, with Sam Mendes attached to direct and Neil Moritz producing. Sam Mendes' Preacher to be Written by John August

22 January 2009 12:42 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Preacher. We've been following the film adaptation of this quadruple Eisner Award-winning, Vertigo published comic book series for quite a long while now. It was at one point a very promising HBO series, but, as we covered last year, has since moved into the feature film arena albeit tentatively under the strained attachment to director Sam Mendes, as we also covered as recently as last week. So, what of this hotly anticipated property now? In my best Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth voice, "Good news, everyone!" Preacher has finally, at long last, found a writer - none other the John August! Surprised? August confirmed on his blog that he has been tapped to adapt the critically adored series for the screen. August most recently wrote The Nines, but is probably best known for his collaborations with Tim Burton on Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, ... »

'Preacher' Finds Writer in 'Corpse Bride' Scribe John August

22 January 2009 12:25 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Supernatural thriller "Preacher" is moving forward with its feature film adaptation. John August, who is known for his works in "Big Fish" and "Charlie's Angels" series among others, has been reportedly picked up to adapt the Vertigo comic book series into silver screen.

A frequent collaborator of Tim Burton, John August has written "Big Fish", "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Corpse Bride" for the film director. Having made his directorial debut at 2007 Sundance Film Festival with "The Nines", he currently teams up once again with Burton for "Dark Shadows".

"Preacher" itself will be directed by Sam Mendes. Adapted from critically lauded graphic novel by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, the movie revolves around Jesse Custer, a down-and-out preacher of a small Texas town. John August to write 'Preacher' for Sam Mendes

21 January 2009 10:25 PM, PST | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

John August will write the screenplay for Sam Mendes' big-screen adaptation of Vertigo’s comic book series “Preacher.”

Created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillion in the ‘90s, the series followed a Texas preacher possessed by Genesis, a spiritual being conceived by an angel and a demon.

Along with a girlfriend and a vampire, the preacher embarks on a cross-country search for God, who abandoned his duties in heaven.

August has quite the experience as screenwriter. His credits include "Charlie's Angels," "Big Fish" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and he also recently wrote and directed "The Nines."

As for Mendes, his "Revolutionary Road" is currently playing. He's also wrapping up "Away We Go," a comedy with John Krasinski.

Writer Says Shazam! Movie is Dead

6 January 2009 7:21 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

According to screenwriter John August, a possible Shazam! comic book adaptation is dead over at Warner Bros.  Already attached were director Peter Segal (Get Smart) and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to play the villain, Black Adam.

August relays the chronology on his personal blog, where he laments the new direction Warner Bros wanted to take following the writers strike and two key summer movies for the studio.

What he describes as “Big, with superpowers,” August originally intended for the Captain Marvel movie to be a comedy with lots of action.  He turned in an origin story that everyone seemed to like about Billy Batson discovering his abilities before facing the evil Black Adam.  Until 100 days of work stoppage had everyone thinking a bit differently.

August also says the failure of family-friendly Speed Racer and the massive success of a darker, deeper Batman changed the way Warners was looking at comic book properties. »
