Villains
johno-2114 September 2006
I saw this at the 2006 Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films and it has been winning awards at film festivals all over the world. This was commissioned by the Irish Film Board and much of it is spoken in the Irish language of Gaeilge with subtitles. It's an 18th century period piece that looks like a lot of money went into making it to recreate the 1760's. A vain and treacherous wealthy husband thirsts for greater wealth and power and he schemes to murder his wife to inherit her family estate. Supernatural forces of the forest witness his evil deeds and have plans of their own for him. Tom Cosgrove is the film's writer and director. Veteran cameraman and cinematographer Des Whelan photographs. Tara Van Zyl comes up with some great costume designs. Padeaig O'Neil, who was an assistant art director on the Academy Award winning film Braveheart is the production designer and Charlotte O'Connor is the art director. Colm O'Maonlai and Fiona O'Shaughnessy star in this horror fantasy Gothic costume drama. Rógairí apparently means villains in Irish. I would give this an 8.0 out of 10.
