The Best of the Decade: The Comic Book Flicks

Trying to rank the best comic flicks of the decade is a surprisingly tough task. I've approached it with all the enthusiasm Hester Prynne must have shown walking to the scaffold. It's not because I don't love discussing the past ten years of the genre, but because I hate ranking films. It puts me into knots of indecision. If I could, I would rank things in a sort of Venn diagram - Iron Man overlaps Batman Begins which overshadows Spider-Man.
But Venn diagrams are impossible to post, and the end of the decade demands lists. So please, take this as one humble writer's list, and use it to jump-start your own. To keep myself sane, I'm leaving off adaptations such as A History of Violence and Road to Perdition. They were based on graphic novels, and they certainly elevated the art of comic adaptation to a whole new level, but that's precisely the problem.

The Queen and I (Drottningen och jag)
Directed by: Nahid Persson
Cast: Empress Farah, Nahid Persson
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: Unrated
Release Date: August 28, 2009
Plot: Nahid Persson fled her native Iran after making a documentary that the government felt was anti-Islamic. Now she wants to make a film about another Iranian refugee, the former Empress Farah. The two women offer different views on living in exile from a beloved country.
Who’s It For? Anyone who’s interest was piqued by the recent unrest in the Iranian elections. The film offers some really interesting perspective on Iran.
Expectations: I was intrigued by the write up, ever since reading Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis and seeing the film of the same name I’ve been interested in the events of the Iranian Revolution.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Empress Farah as herself: Initially I wasn’t sure I was going to like Farah.

‘Persepolis’ Creator Marjane Satrapi Decries Iran’s Election Results

Probably the best known Iranian creator in comics today, Marjane Satrapi’s two-volume graphic novel memoir “Persepolis” captivated readers internationally when it was published by Pantheon before the feature-length animated adaptation she directed earned an Oscar nomination. This week, she and fellow filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf let their views be known about the recent, contested Iranian election, and presented a document that she believes proves current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad lost to challenger Mir Hossein Mousavi.
“Ahmadinejad received only 12 percent of the vote, not 65 percent,” said Satrapi, according to Adnkronos. She and Makhmalbaf presented the document, which they claimed came directly from the Iranian electoral commission, to the Green Party MPs in the European parliament.
Satrapi and Makhmalbaf believe that the democratic process in Iran was derailed when election results were ignored and replaced with fraudulent results naming Ahmadinejad as the winner with more than 65 percent of the vote.

Adnkronos, an Italian press agency that specializes in English-language news from the Arab world, is reporting today that Persepolis creator/co-director Marjane Satrapi and her fellow Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf (probably best known here for his 2001 film Kandahar) "presented a document to Green Party MPs in the European parliament claiming to show that defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi had received over 19 million votes in the weekend election." The document, purportedly from the Iranian Electoral Commission, also claims that standing president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came in third place with just 12 percent of the national vote.

Animated Movie To Open Cannes For First Time

Disney/Pixar's Up will have its world premiere as the opening film of
the 62nd Cannes Film Festival on May 13, becoming the first animated film as
well as the first 3D film ever to open the celebrated festival, organizers
announced today (Thursday). It is due to be released in the U.S. on May
29th. While other animated films have been featured in and out of
competition at Cannes over the years, the French black-and-white film
Persepolis is the only one ever to have won a prize, taking the Jury
Award in 2007. While in making its announcement the festival listed nine
other animated films that had been included in its Official Selection in the
past, it oddly made no mention of Persepolis, a film about an Iranian
girl growing up during the Islamic revolution. Like Up, Persepolis
was to have had the prestigious spot as the opening film at the Bangkok Film
Festival in 2007 but was yanked following protests by Iranian diplomats in
the Thai capital.

'Slumdog Millionaire' and 'Ben Button' Lead BAFTA Nominees with 11 Followed By 'The Dark Knight'

The 2009 BAFTA Award nominees have been announced and Slumdog Millionaire, along with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, leads the way with 11 nominations with The Dark Knight close behind with nine. However, at the top of the pile it is immediately noticeable that The Dark Knight did not get a Best Film nomination as all the usual suspects are there, but The Reader is added to the pack as one of its five nominations.
Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) is considered a lead actor at the BAFTAs and earns a nomination in the category while he is competing Stateside for a Supporting nom. I believe he is more of a lead actor than a supporting, but Fox Searchlight obviously sees the supporting category as the easier place to get him a nomination and has pushed him in the category as a result. Other than that, the usuals are there with Brad Pitt earning a nomination,
