Sony Weekly Update (Dec. 17-23)

19 December 2009 8:09 AM, PST | GameRant | See recent GameRant news »

Another Thursday, another update to the Sony PlayStation Store, and another Game Rant Weekly Update.

Guitar Hero: Van Halen finds its way to PS3 retail shelves this week – jumping into the already over-saturated, and uninspired, band-specific Guitar Hero market. Unless you are a fan of the band, or were one of the savvy gamers who will be receiving this title free – as part of the a mid-Fall Guitar Hero 5 promotion – there’s nothing new in Guitar Hero: Van Halen to get excited about. Pixel Junk Shooter is potentially on track to become one of the fastest selling Psn titles to date. It’s a great game, I’m just saying, in case you want to save yourself about $50 dollars and download it instead of revisiting another uninspired Guitar Hero band game.

Most of the attention this week is on the release of the Gran Turismo 5: Time Trial Challenge Demo »

7 December 2009 1:00 PM, PST | MTV Multiplayer | See recent MTV Multiplayer news »

Everyone's seen the cast members of Hideo Kojima's next "Metal Gear" game for the PSP, and now the street date for "Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker" is public information as well. Japan still gets the earliest chance to play on March 18th, and the UK gets it May 28th, but U.S. gamers will get a three-day head start on May 25th.

"'Metal Gear Solid' fans should prepare themselves for the next chapter of Snake’s story,” the Metal Gear series' creator Hideo Kojima said in Konami's announcement. “'Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker' will answer many of the series’ unanswered questions and showcase a different, more collaborative side to tactical espionage."

Chronologically, "Peace Walker" takes place in 1974 after "Metal Gear Solid 3" and following the series' Naked Snake storyline. The script will be provided by Kojima and take Snake down to Central America where Outer Heaven's plans continue to unfold. »

Konami announced today that "Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker", the latest installment in the highly successful videogame franchise, is set to launch in North America on May 25, 2010. It will ship three days later in the United Kingdom. Peace Walker puts players in the role of Naked Snake/Big Boss once more and gives them a look at the earliest stages of his Outer Heaven mercenary group. Series creator Hideo Kojima and Konami are emphasizing Peace Walker as a "full-scale sequel" in the Metal Gear series and not a spin-off or side project. One of the big new additions to Peace Walker is cooperative multiplayer action for up to four players. Gamers can pick from one of four Snakes, each with its own equipment and focus on stealth, combat, or a mix of the two.

Fan Rant: Please Don't Let Paul W.S. Anderson Direct 'Metal Gear Solid'

15 November 2009 6:03 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Dear Sony,

As I am sure you are aware, you own the film rights to any adaptation of Metal Gear Solid, the outstanding brainchild of video game auteur Hideo Kojima. I have no doubt that since the property became a gaming icon after Konami brought it to the Playstation in 1998 many have tried to get a film adaptation off the ground. I'm sure you've heard pitch after pitch, and maybe even solicited some of your own, so I appreciate that no ground has been made on turning the beloved series - arguably the most cinematic game of all time - toward the big screen.

Yet I fear that with a big budget adaptation of Prince of Persia on the horizon, you might start getting antsy about making a big budget video game movie of your own; and if that's the case, please do not take up Paul W.S. Anderson on »

13 November 2009 11:59 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Paul W.S. Anderson, who is currently shooting "Resident Evil: Afterlife", has planned to keep himself busy after wrapping the movie. His partner in "Resident Evil", producer Jeremy Bolt, recently told press that the helmer, who has been set to produce "The Three Musketeers", is circling two upcoming movie projects.

According to Bolt, Anderson has once again eyed the helmer position for "Castlevania", in which James Wan has been attached to direct. Additionally, he has put his name in the unofficial bidding for directing "Metal Gear Solid".

"Castlevania", based on classic video game with the same title, will follow Transylvanian knight who leads his men into a gothic castle to seek refuge from the Turkish army. The knights soon discover the castle is controlled by the original vampire. Paul W.S. Anderson will serve both as producer and writer of the 2010 movie.

Kojima 'considering Zoe sequel'

15 October 2009 3:42 AM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Hideo Kojima will consider making a new Zone Of The Enders game. The Metal Gear Solid writer and producer said that revisiting the series is "on top of the list" for his studio. "Our team loves the game," he told PlayStation Blog. "Of course, there are a lot of things Kojima Productions wants to bring out, and Zone of the Enders is at the top of the list. "It's not going to be out too soon, but we really considering about it." However, Kojima revealed that (more) »

Hands-on: 'Mgs: Peace Walker' demo (PSP)

28 September 2009 7:14 AM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Releasing another portable entry in the Metal Gear Solid series seems like something of a risk on Konami's part. With the superlative Guns Of The Patriots and the amiable handheld effort Portable Ops raising the bar high, the PSP-exclusive Mgs: Peace Walker has much to live up to. The demo is now on our doorsteps - albeit in Japanese - and early signs indicate that Hideo Kojima and co. have gone the extra mile to meet our lofty expectations. Following Big Boss' exploits in Costa Rica in 1974, the game fits in canonically between Portable Ops and the original Metal Gear. Disillusioned with the American government, the soldier forms an army known as the Militaires Sans Frontières with the intention of moulding them into the world's most powerful fighters. When an insidious military force rises to power in Costa Rica, the Boss and (more) »

According to the game's producer Kenichiro Imaizmu, the Kojima Productions head had been leading the design of a custom controller for the title. The peripheral is said to have incorporated a pulse reader and electric shock waves. "We tried running electric shock waves, install a pulse reader... we also tried to build a controller (more) »

'Mgs: Rising' still at experimental stage

3 September 2009 10:18 AM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has said that Metal Gear Solid: Rising is still at the "experimental" stage, but he hopes to take it to "the next step beyond". Back in June, Kojima announced that his acclaimed series is coming to the Xbox 360 console with Metal Gear Solid: Rising, which will also be released on PC and PS3. Discussing the challenges involved with making this game, he told GamePro that taking the series to the next stage "is really a big job". "What we're doing right now is making totally new - not just overhauled - engines and AI and things like that," he said. "Even the management and team formations at Kojima Productions we are changing around." Creating a multiplatform Metail Gear Solid game has also (more) »

The Sandbox: The Trouble with Cutscenes

14 August 2009 7:55 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Video games aren't movies, but they sure can be intent on acting like them, most prominently through the scripted sequences known as cutscenes, those insufferable CG-animated interludes that propel stories forward while you wait... and wait... and wait to resume playing. Cutscenes have been around, in at least some rudimentary form, since the dawn of games, and they're not all bad -- the quick between-level vignettes of the Nes' "Ninja Gaiden," for example, were so thrilling to me as a kid that just thinking about them elicits a pang of sweet nostalgia. But as graphics have improved and games have tried to elevate themselves to a cultural plane equal to that of film, these intermission sequences have become hair-tearingly inescapable. They've become a pox on mainstream gaming, providing style without substance, and forcing the mechanisms of one medium onto another.

This desire to be "cinematic" is, as even gaming fan Steven Spielberg recognizes, »

Kojima: 'Peacewalker a MGS5-class game'

17 July 2009 2:52 AM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Hideo Kojima has stressed that PSP title Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker will be a proper addition to the series. In a press release issued by Konami, series creator Kojima said that the game will be a full continuation of the story rather than a spinoff. "This game is an MGS5-class game," he said. "I am supervising, designing, producing, directing, and editing this title together with the MGS4 team. Therefore in that sense, Metal Gear Solid has not ended, and the Metal Gear saga continues." He also explained his reasons for returning to the series (more) »

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has revealed that he will act in a "support role" for the upcoming Castlevania: Lord Of Shadows. In an interview with Famitsu, the designer confirmed that his studio Kojima Productions will be at hand to advise developer Mercury Steam Entertainment. "This has become a big project, one with the idea that we needed to make a Castlevania which had that same kind of feverish Western support, and that's why Kojima Productions came in to help," he said. Kojima talks 'Metal Gear Solid 5'

27 June 2009 4:22 AM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has revealed that he has several potential concepts for the fifth instalment in the franchise. Speaking to 1Up, the former Konami president said that he has three ideas for Metal Gear Solid 5, but would prefer to take a backseat on the project. "I have three concepts for MGS5 already. What would be ideal for me with MGS5, though, is that we don’t do those," he said. "If the team picks one of those concepts, I have to get involved again, which I don't want to do. "There are already so many good ideas from the staff, so if we select one of those, that would be really good. At that point I could (more) »

E3 2009: Sony Announces ‘Assassin’s Creed 2′, PSP Go, a ‘Wiimote That Works’ and More

2 June 2009 10:09 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Following Nintendo’s Wii Sports Resort and Mario filled press events, Sony Computer Entertainment of America’s CEO and President Jack Trentton took the stage. Jack said that despite numerous press leaks, Sony still had some tricks up their sleeve. He was proud to announce Sony would be releasing 364 games this year before pointing out that Sony was the only company currently running three separate systems at the same time (which isn’t entirely true as Nintendo has the Wii, DS and DSi, which has some different games not available to the DS). After giving some projected sales figures for the Playstation 3, he applauded the success of Infamous, calling it the first successful summer blockbuster game with ratings averaging over 90%.

The first new title shown, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, was presented by Evan Wells, CEO of developer Naughty Dog. The single player gameplay footage showed Drake and a female companion »

E3 2009 Sony Press Conference: The Highlights

It doesn’t matter how many times Jack Tretton says that 2008 was a banner year, full of momentum and good times, for the Playstation family. There’s no escaping the truth: times are tough for Sony. The PSP continues to sell while its software continues to stagnate. The Playstation 2 enjoyed an Indian summer when its priced dropped, but the system has undeniably entered its twilight. And the Playstation3? Well, growing your audience by forty percent is all well and good but that audience is still very small compared to those of your competitors. Sony needed a big show at E3 2009 and, while the actual show dragged here and there, they had a giant one. Here’s the breakdown.

E3 2009 - Microsoft Press Conference: The Highlights

You’ve got to hand it to Microsoft. In the weeks leading up to E3, the discussion surrounding the house of X was focused on precisely what they didn’t have. Where was their fall line-up? Where were the exclusives that have defined the console? Microsoft had them and then some.

Opening your show with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr instead of closing with them is the probably the most impressive show of corporate confidence in history. With the reveal of Project Natal, Microsoft’s new hands-free controller-camera, the house of green showed that this was no mere act of baseless hubris. They came to play.

The show opened with a selection of multiplatform titles. “The Beatles: Rock Band” looked more than promising by changing up “Rock Band”’s familiar play with vocal harmonies. Three singers from Harmonix’s house band performed “Day Tripper”, with three separate vocal pitches to perform. »

E3 2009: Microsoft Announces New Games, Project Natal, More - Part 2

Continuing on with Microsoft’s Press Conference from today. If you recall, Part One focused on the games announced and now, Part Two will focus mostly on the XBox 360 console itself and the amazing announcement of “Project Natal” and the AI known as Milo.

In the years since the XBox 360 was released, Microsoft has done whatever they could to make their console the essential entertainment centerpiece of your home — and this time around that trend continues. They lead the charge with streaming music coming to the console with a partnership with last.fm, which will give XBox Live Gold members free access to the service featuring millions of songs.

Netflix service will also be getting upgraded soon as users won’t need to even use their PC anymore to stream video to their XBox 360 console. Instead, they will be able to browse the entire library of “Watch Instantly” movies from »
