Kristin Scott Thomas: 'I've been a very sad person, but I'm not any more'

Kristin Scott Thomas on self-belief, not being on the right list in Hollywood and playing John Lennon's Aunt Mimi in her latest film

The moment that Kristin Scott Thomas knew she didn't want to be a typical movie star, the moment it seems she switched from playing romantic leads to infinitely more interesting roles, was when a director told her she should make her character more appealing. The idea didn't grab her. "I just thought, I don't want to do that," she says. "I don't want to have to be pretty. I don't want to have to be adorable. Because if I'm watching that on screen I get irritated." She sits back with a sigh. "I can't bear it."

It was an astute response. After all, Scott Thomas's best work is not about looking doe-eyed and flicking her hair; instead it's defined by froideur, then thaw. There is a toughness in her performances, »

Yes Man (Peyton Reed, 2008)

Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. Just say no.

The Golden Compass (Chris Weitz, 2007)

27 November 2009 7:14 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Jessica Biel has admitted that she finds rumours about her relationship with Justin Timberlake "bizarre" to deal with. The Easy Virtue star has become a tabloid favourite since she started dating Timberlake around three years ago. Speaking to The Independent, she said: "It's definitely been weird and sort of bizarre to deal with. But you have to have a sense of humour about the whole thing. "Honestly, (more) »

Easy Virtue Blu-ray Review

4 October 2009 8:57 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

“Based on a play by Noel Coward.” That’s a statement that’s got some oomph. Coward’s long been held as a master of wit, with plays like Blithe Spirit, Design for Living and Private Lives still well known long after his death. The film Easy Virtue is based on a play by Coward, and takes some of the design of his play, but it’s obvious that this is a modern redress, which is both interesting and not. My review after the jump.

Jessica Biel stars as the American Larita, who marries into the Whitaker family and to John Whitaker (Ben Barnes), after the two meet when she wins the Grand Prix. Very American, Larita does nothing to impress John’s mother (Kristin Scott Thomas), though his father (Colin Firth) is an eccentric and takes a shine to her immediately. John’s sisters are on the verge of becoming old maids, »

DVD Playhouse—September 2009

By

Allen Gardner

The Human Condition (Criterion) Masaki Kobayashi’s epic (574 minutes) adaptation of Junpei Gomikawa’s six-volume novel was originally made and released as three separate films (1959-61), and is rightfully regarded as a landmark of Japanese cinema. Candide-like story of naïve, good-hearted Kaiji (Japanese superstar Tatsuya Nakadai) from labor camp supervisor, to Imperial Army solider, to Soviet Pow, and Kaiji’s struggle to maintain his humanity throughout. Unfolds with the mastery of a great novel, beautifully-shot, and a stunning example of cinematic mastery on the part of its makers. Four-disc set bonuses include: Interview with Kobayashi; Interview with Nakadai; Featurette; Trailer; Essay by critic Philip Kemp. Widescreen. Dolby 3.0 surround.

State Of Play (Universal) Russell Crowe stars as a veteran Washington D.C. political reporter investigating the murder of an aide to a rising congressional star (Ben Affleck), who also happens to be an old friend. »

Jessica Biel to Be Bradley Cooper's Ex in 'The A-Team'

15 September 2009 9:56 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

A female lead role for TV-to-film adaptation "The A-Team" could fall onto the lap of Jessica Biel. According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), the Larita Whittaker of "Easy Virtue" is in talks to star opposite the already-signed cast, Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper and Quinton Jackson aka Rampage Jackson.

Should a deal is finalized, the 27-year-old movie beauty will star as the Army general pursuing the mercenary team who also happens to be the former lover of Cooper's Faceman. The role won't be her first in the shoes of a military officer. She had portrayed Navy pilot Lieutenant Kara Wade in 2005's "Stealth".

In addition to Biel's casting news, THR also confirmed circulating rumor that linked Sharlto Copley to the role of H.M. 'Howling Mad' Murdoch, the Army's best chopper pilot who is also suffering from delusions, memory loss, and hallucinations. The publication reported that the star of hit summer »

New on DVD: Creeps, mutants, Coward...and Barbie!

15 September 2009 3:05 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Superhero mutants on a rampage, zombie babies, a drawing-room comedy and a sword-fighting Barbie are among the offerings in this week's new DVDs.

Read on for more!

If you ever thought that you'd watch just anything with Hugh Jackman in it, that idea might be tested by X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a dopey prequel that tells us how the adamantium-clawed Logan came to be that way and why he can't remember his past. This one will even test the patience of hard-core Ryan Reynolds fans. (He turns up as super-assassin Deadpool.)

Horror fans will definitely get their fix on this week, with the critically-acclaimed (and queer-inclusive) indie Grace leading the pack. Jordan Ladd stars as a woman who wills her miscarried baby back to life, only to discover that she's given birth to a flesh-eating zombie.

And mom is ready to feed the child, no matter what. Also on sale this »

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

After X-Men and X2, we expected a lot from our adamantium man. But rather than slipping in as another irresistible cinematic piece of high-action fun, we got a flick that didn't even begin to live up to our love of the claws. Jeffrey M. Anderson said a number of negative things about the film, including: "The movie's whitewashing of all the gray areas between good and evil is just one side effect of its dubious approach." Skip it. Also on Blu-ray.

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed X-Men Origins: Wolverine I wish DVD and Blu-ray sales were more readily available, because it will be interesting to see what kind of business this title does. Fanboys seemed to hate this film across the board, so I can't help but wonder how many of them will buy it on the down low and hide it under their bed when their friends come over. I, for one, actually didn't think it was all that bad. It was, at the very least, entertaining. This isn't to say I think you should buy it, but it works as a one-time watch. The Ultimate Force of Four

Hero / Zatoichi / Iron Monkey / The Legend of Drunken Master Buena Vista Home Entertainment sent me these and I am going to be watching all four and bring you a review hopefully by the end of the week. »

Barnes' Musical Ambition

8 September 2009 12:06 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

British actor Ben Barnes has a back-up career in mind if the movie offers stop coming in - singing.

The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian star has been interested in music since he was a youngster, and was part of U.K. boyband Hyrise back in 2004.

Barnes also recorded a track with Colin Firth and Jessica Biel for the Easy Virtue soundtrack earlier this year - and his background in music has set him up for a fall-back career if he ever decides to step away from Hollywood.

He tells Britain's Ok! magazine, "When I was younger I was a quiet boy and I was always into music. My dad took me to see the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney and I was a big Queen fan.

"I was always singing and then this company came to my school called the National Youth Music Theatre which is the company that Jude Law, Jonny Lee Miller and Jamie Bell went through. I did about six years of plays with them, so that was kind of my training ground." »
