The episode is, as another reviewer says, a fairly generic "Compo out to impress Nora" plot. Perfectly entertaining but nothing really original.
But I wanted to just say what an asset to the show I think Crusher was. His introduction brings in a younger character for a start, something that was a bit lacking for quite a long time (Compo's nephew from the very early days would have been worth keeping, with his Larkin-like family).
He obviously fills a hole left by poor Sid, but more than that he gives Ivy a bit of an outlet for her frustrated maternal feelings. She by no means dotes on him, but it's fairly clear that despite the volume level (Milburn!) she actually rather likes having him around.
By the time we do get Ivy being alone in the cafe, the cast has expanded a bit, so it's rather less noticeable that she's rattling around on her own, plus of course we get the coffee mornings (which are often the funniest thing in some episodes) and the ladies' outings.
So he might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but Crusher is a real asset.
