Classic TV Xmas Countdown Episode #10
Mel offers to drive Alice and Tommy to Colorado Springs for Xmas in a big rig. Flo and Vera tag along but the journey is impeded by snow.
This is the first and best of the four Xmas episodes of ALICE, penned by the old I LOVE LUCY writers. It's not a laugh-riot, nor overly sentimental but strikes a nice balance. The cast really shine here. Alice's excitement when Mel gives her the good news is especially well-played by Linda Lavin.
The CB craze of the '70s figures into the plot. Of course, Flo's an expert - having dated her share of truckers. She uses the handle "Hot Cargo" - very fitting - and gets audience applause. When Flo's on the CB Alice is amused and Vera's confused. Vera's more interested in the road signs advertising Roscoe's Reptile Farm.
It's odd when Vera says she's never seen snow since it's known the character is from Boston. When Mel says profits are so low that the only Xmas bonus he can afford the girls is a free meal on the house, Flo lets loose with a "Kiss My Grits!".
The entire second act takes place in the cab but it's not boring. Has some good characters moments and is the "go-to" Xmas episode of ALICE. None of the others measure up. 8/10.
