Brittany Murphy's Acting Career: From 'Clueless' Tai To 'Sin City' Barmaid

Of her many roles, the late actress once said her penguin in 'Happy Feet' was most like her.

"You're a virgin who can't drive." With that one line in "Clueless," delivered in saucy mean-girl style, Brittany Murphy entered the pop culture history books. Fourteen years later, the 32-year-old actress died after suffering an apparent full cardiac arrest on Sunday morning. But before her tragic passing, Murphy left a string of memorable performances on the big and small screen.

Murphy got her start in Hollywood with a series of guest appearances on TV shows while still in her teens. " 'Murphy Brown' was a really big deal for me. That was my second day in L.A.," she told MTV News in 2006. And it wasn't long before the actress secured the plum role of ugly duckling Tai Fraiser in "Clueless. »

Remembering Brittany Murphy

21 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

We were shocked and saddened when news broke that Brittany Murphy died of sudden cardiac arrest in her home yesterday morning at the age of 32. Soon after the story was confirmed, people all over the Internet began expressing their grief and fond memories of Murphy with quotes from her cult classic, Clueless: "That was way harsh, Tai."

Murphy's big screen break came in 1995 when she starred opposite Alicia Silverstone in the modern adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma. Clueless took Emma from country balls in the English countryside to city malls in Beverly Hills. Critics were skeptical about the movie's premise, but it won legions of fans, thanks in large part to Murphy's portrayal of Tai, an affable, naive west coast transplant whose one-liners obviously continue to be remembered by an entire generation. Interview: Brittany Murphy (The Dead Girl)

21 December 2009 4:43 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

What a strange bit of untimely news this morning. Who dies of a heart attack at age 32? Makes no sense. The above news headline isn't a case of bad taste -- I've decided to re-publish a Brittany Murphy interview we had on the site, which I had completely forgot that we had, but it serves as a reminder that the actress, known for bubbly roles as Jameson mentions in his intro below, and as of late, had some back to back films that went the direct to video route, should also be remembered for taking on some difficult, challenging indie parts as in Karen Moncrieff's film. - What a strange bit of untimely news this morning. Brittany Murphy (Rip)

20 December 2009 1:30 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

When Brittany Murphy turned 32 last month I made an joke about her extended absence from the screen. "She acts 'I hope not sporadically'" It was an affectionate joke, riffing on my favorite of her many fine line readings from Clueless. I genuinely liked to see her onscreen. I never imagined that the following month she'd be dead of cardiac arrest. With talented young actresses, I always hope for the best.

The last time I saw Brittany Murphy in the movie theater she was playing the hard living title character in the female ensemble feature The Dead Girl (2006). As "Krista" entered a serial killer's car I felt an awful rising pity for her but also anger that she was such a fuck-up. It was tempting if uncharitable to feel both things about Brittany Murphy offscreen as well. I have no idea what was happening to her when her stardom began to »
