The last decade has seen a surge of “Nazi horror” movies that struck enough of a chord to kick-start a subgenre. Most are risible and bypassed big screens to debut on DVD, prior to perishing in pound store video bins, but there are a few gems amongst the twaddle. Dead Snow 2: Red Vs Dead is a subgenre standout and one of a small fistful to feature the Nazi undead. Along with the lesser likes of War of the Dead, Frankenstein’s Army and Outpost, these utilised our fear/hatred of Nazism to shape a new supernatural antagonist.
Overlord is the latest Nazi horror and one of very few to make it into cinemas. Following his impressive, criminally under-seen debut Son of a Gun, director Julius Avery, with screenwriters Billy Ray, Mark L Smith and producer Jj Abrams give Nazi horror a bigger budget/ creative bolstering with enthralling results; for Overlord is a frenzied,...

Ahead of the UK premiere of his latest film It Came From the Desert at the Horror Channel Frightfest Halloween event, director Marko Mäkilaakso shares his admiration for Roger Corman, love of B-Movies, spoofing and overcoming homeland obstacles.
It Came From the Desert is inspired by Cinemaware’s cult 1980s video game, which in turn was motivated by the giant creature feature craze infesting 1950s Hollywood. What was the main inspiration for you?
There’s so many movies and makers which inspired Icftd, but the main inspiration was exactly that; creature feature infested 1950s Hollywood films, and the legendary Cinemaware Desert games and creature features and action comedies I grew up with in the 1980s. I love B-movies and mainstream filmmakers who give homages to those in their works, like Joe Dante, John Landis, Tim Burton, Steven Spielberg etc. There’s something so pure and honest about B-movies and even...

There really is not a whole lot we have to say about the Finnish creature feature It Came From the Desert. After a couple proofs of concept came out Canadian outfit Raven Banner jumped on board to help get it out into the world and now the official trailer is here! It Came From The Desert is an adaptation of a 1989 video game and is directed by filmmaker Marko Mäkilaakso who made War of the Dead, which was not the most favorite thing I saw on the festival circuit that year, but it is hard to screw up giant ants. Mäkilaakso directed and co-wrote with Hank Woon (Age of Dinosaurs) and Trent Haaga (68 Kill). Roger! Picture’s Teemu Virta and Alliance Media...

Idw Publishing is bringing zombie comic Deadworld back to life this December. Gary Reed and Sami Makkonen, the team behind Deadworld: War of the Dead, continue where they left off and push the story into even darker territory with new mini-series Deadworld: Restoration.
“I’m excited about this series,” said writer Reed, “and the title of the series, Restoration, ties in with a number of different elements within the story. Yes, some things are restored, but it’s not going to be what most people think.”
Reed is the one of the original writers of the Deadworld series and a longtime contributor as well as the co-creator and writer of the Harvey Award nominee for Best New Series, Baker Street. In the horror genre, it.s always more surprising when films don.t get sequels than when they inevitably do, especially on the indie front. So when it was announced that Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola would be revisiting Nazi zombie in a sequel to his 2009 cult hit Dead Snow, it only seemed strange that it hadn.t happened already. And honestly, we probably wouldn.t even be covering this film except that it has attracted the likes of Judd Apatow-world alum Martin Starr, reports Variety, along with comic actresses Ingrid Haas and Jocelyn Deboer. While that news is crazy enough on its own, they.ve also somehow decided to change the film.s name from Dead Snow 2: War of the Dead to the even more cringe-worthy Dead Snow 2: Red Vs. Dead. My interest in Starr.s involvement was cut in half by that stupid ass title. Given...

After a sojourn in Hollywood (well, it was shot in Germany) with Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola is returning to past glories for his next film. Dead Snow: Red Vs. Dead is the follow-up to his 2009 Nazi-zombies epic Dead Snow, and Martin Starr, Ingrid Haas and Jocelyn Deboer have just been added to the cast roster."Ein! Zwei! Die!" was the memorable tagline of the original Raimi-influenced splatter comedy. The plot involved a gang of spring-breaking students stumbling upon some looted WWII treasure and incurring the wrath of the Reich revenants still jealously guarding it.The sequel originally went under the title War Of the Dead, but has presumably dropped that moniker in deference to the 2011 Finnish film of the same name. So it now sounds like a Rockstar western game instead. This time out, the story sees the sole survivor of the last encounter teaming...

“Dead Snow” is one of my all-time favorite zombie movies, so it’s good to know that production is moving forward on “Dead Snow: War of the Dead.” Director Tommy Wirkola jumps back into familiar territory after making his Hollywood debut with “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” a movie that went on to make a tidy $219 million around the world. In fact, Paramount is reportedly interested in making a sequel. However, Wirkola’s involvement in the project is not guaranteed. But no worries! “Dead Snow: War of the Dead” is currently in the works, which is good news for those who worried that Wirkola may leave the franchise behind after getting a taste of the Hollywood life. The sequel reportedly deals with a group of American zombie killers who join forces with the lone survivor of the first film to wipe out the undead Nazi threat. Sounds...

So is it zombie Nazis or Nazi zombies? Anyways. Tommy Wirkola promised a sequel to his 2009 breakthrough hit “Dead Snow” more than two years ago, and it looks like he’s ready to deliver. After flirting with Hollywood on “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” (that film has collected over $127 million worldwide after just three weeks of release), Wirkola is expected to return to his native Norway to start shooting the sequel, titled “Dead Snow: War Of The Dead” sometime this year. From the sound of the plot (below), “Dead Snow: War Of The Dead” will take place after the events of the first movie. The zombie movie apocalypse continues with War of the Dead, an action film/zombie hybrid with some surprisingly strong cinematography, solid performances and several other positive aspects the target audience will not especially care about.
During WWII, along the Russian border, Nazi scientists hide away in a secret bunker and perform “anti-death” experiments on captured Russian soldiers. When the test subjects turn into crazed, flesh-eating zombies with superhuman strength, the experiments are abandoned and the “evidence” is buried in a mass grave. Two years later an American and Finnish task force led by Captain Stone (Andrew Tiernan) is recruited to find and destroy the Nazi bunker. They face off with German soldiers and several men on both sides are killed or severely wounded.

In the sequel the story follows the sole survivor of a Nazi zombie attack who battles an even larger army of Zombies with the help of a professional gang of American zombie killers who call themselves the Zombie Squad. Efm 2013: News Wrap-up - Dead Snow: War of the Dead, The Pact 2, Autumn Blood, Dead End, Territorial
There's lots of news today coming out of the European Film Market in Berlin, and rather than write several stories, we figured it would be a little easier to drop the whole thing on you in one neat package. Read on!
First up for you Nazi zombie fans, writer and director Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) is returning to his native Norway to direct the action-filled Dead Snow: War of the Dead.
“Set to be released in both English and Norwegian, the new film follows the sole survivor of a Nazi zombie attack who battles an even larger army of zombies with the help of the Zombie Squad, a professional gang of zombie killers from the Us.
Wirkola says of the new script for his sequel to the cult hit Dead Snow: “[It's] bigger, scarier, funnier, more action-filled and gorier than the previous one.”

Normally, a B-movie that can find a new fun twist on killing Nazis (like Iron Sky) or zombies (like far too many to list) earns a place in the pantheon of cult classic films. Marko Makilaakso’s War of the Dead deserves no such dubious honor but it comes close. Despite some decent special effects and writing with definite potential, the cast drags the film into worthless slop with acting that’s over-the-top in just the wrong way. It’s never so bad it’s funny; it’s just poorly made with the cast going for the most obvious character portrayals while still making themselves impossible to invest in from the audience’s perspective. As both writer and director it’s clear Marko Makilaakso could have a potentially bright future down the road, but it doesn’t start with War of the Dead.

Director: Marko Mäkilaakso. Writers Marko Mäkilaakso, and Barr B. Potter. Cast: Andrew Tiernan, Mikko Leppilampi, Samuel Vauramo, Jouko Ahola, Mark Wingett, and Andreas Wilson. War of the Dead was originally titled Stone's War. This film has undergone several other changes in its eight year production history. Production companies have come and gone along with primary cast members. James van der Beek was one actor who was attached to this picture only to be replaced by another. War of the Dead released in the United Kingdom on DVD May 28th and this film has not overcome the many challenges of production. The film reviewed here is simply lackluster in story and character development. Only a few exciting film elements draw this title out of complete oblivion. The film is set during World War II. Finnish and American forces are working together to destroy an underground German bunker. Beneath the ground, an...

War Of The Dead
Stars: Andrew Tiernan, Samuel Vauramo, Mark Wingett, Jouko Ahola | Written and Directed by Mark Makilasko
“Captain Martin Stone (Tiernan) is leading a finely-trained, elite platoon of American and Finnish soldiers as they attack an enemy bunker. Underestimating their enemy’s strength, they are quickly beaten back into the forest. As they try to regroup, they are suddenly attacked by the same soldiers they had just killed a few minutes earlier. Forced to flee deeper into Russian territory, they discover one of war’s most terrifying secrets and realize they have woken up a far deadlier enemy.”
I first saw War of the Dead (on the big screen no less) at Glasgow Frightfest, but sadly I slept through half of it – whether that was because of the film or just a lack of sleep was always a matter for debate. Until now. Having sat through Momentum’s...
