Ready, set, go
"Gentlemen Start Your Monsters" is the second 'What's New Scooby Doo' episode centered around car racing. The first being Season 2's "The Fast and the Wormious", though that felt like a different type of car racing. Car racing was not new for the franchise before 'What's New Scooby Doo', but it was something that was always done very interestingly and entertainingly. And this is coming from a non-sports fan, while still being healthy.
It is hard to say which is the better episode between "The Fast and the Wormious" and "Gentlemen Start Your Monsters". Both are very good and entertaining in their own way and do a great job with their settings and the theme, as do most of the sports themed Scooby Doo episodes. Both are the same in creativity and equal in overall quality, maybe this episode gets the slight edge for the van modifications despite the ending for "The Fast and the Wormious" being much more plausible.
The animation is colourful and beautifully detailed, the unique monster design and Fred's van modifications particularly stand out. The car racing is full of energy visually and in the fast and furious pacing. The music fits well within the style of the show and also with the mystery. The intro is catchy still.
Writing is very funny and always intriguing. It can be over the top but it works. The story always absorbs, starting off with one of the season's creepiest openings and capturing perfectly the thrills of car racing.
It benefits too from the creative and freaky monster, one of the shows most elaborate. The gang are on strong form, with Fred having his most interesting appearance of the show here (loved his role and his nifty modifications). Can't fault the voice acting either.
Did feel though that the solution was a bit of a stretch, just didn't believe that the culprits could pull off something that elaborate that well when most people at least twice their age would struggle to do it.
All in all, very enjoyable. 8/10.
