Tickles the funny bone and warms the heart
TheLittleSongbird1 October 2016
As a fan of Winnie the Pooh, 'The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh' was always one of my favourite shows as a child. Not all childhood favourites have held up, but 'The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh' is one of the strongest examples of those that have.

While the original three 60s-70s short films ('Honey Tree', 'Blustery Day' and 'Tigger Too') and the 1977 'The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh' are just a little better, 'The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh' is one of the Winnie the Pooh franchise's high points. In the same way that "My Hero" is non-stop hilarious entertainment, "Owl Feathers" is also really heart-warming and brings back a lot of fond memories. The former is one of my favourites from the show, which as has been said a lot is a rare case of a show where there isn't a bad episode, while "Owl Feathers" isn't quite but still great.

The animation in both episodes is very bright, well drawn and colourful, everything looking lush, detailed and smooth, it is the case with both episodes but especially with "My Hero". The music is playfully jaunty and beautifully orchestrated, enhancing sadder moments with poignant and particularly lush and emotional scoring and the more playful moments with a jaunty touch. The theme tune is very rousing and one of the catchiest theme songs of any animated show of the late 80s.

Writing has a perfect mix of whimsy, drollness, wit, charm and childhood innocence, "My Hero" is particularly true of this. Both stories are beautifully paced, hilarious and heart-warming.

"My Hero" has possibly more childhood innocence. There is so much to love about the episode, but particular highlights were Tigger dancing with a mop cleaning Piglet's house in return for Piglet saving his life, which is simply hilarious, Tigger's closing line which has a sense of cheekiness to it and Owl trying to save Eeyore then finding that Eeyore's too heavy for the two of them so both fall from the sky. Piglet is adorable, and Tigger is every bit as funny and lovable as ever, while the animation, music and dialogue are once again top notch.

"Owl Feathers" as said brings back a lot of memories. Owl always used to amuse me with his long rambling stories about his relatives and what not, and to see a change of pace to him, and to see adorable little Piglet trying to help him fly again was one of the most heart-warming memories of my childhood. As always, the storytelling warms the heart and makes you smile.

Both "My Hero" and "Owl Feathers are helped by the delightful characters and their adorable chemistry that play a huge part in the show's remarkably consistent appeal. All the voice acting is excellent, Paul Winchell once again getting top honours.

In conclusion, two great episodes that tickle the funny bone and warm the heart. 10/10 Bethany Cox
