Water increases its volume when it gets close to freezing or close to boiling, and indeed Guillermo Del Toro's The Shape of Water keeps expanding nicely, now that it's gaining some box office heat. The film is currently the number 13 film in the United States with just over a million dollars earned this week, which sounds underwhelming until you see the film plays in only 41 venues. To put this in context: the number 12 has 2,124 venues and the number 14 has 1,453 venues. Critics are generally raving about it (our Shelagh Rowan-Legg says it's Del Toro at his best), and this is in no small part due to the cast, which includes Sally Hawkins and Michael Shannon, both fantastic. So let's make...

Michael Shannon has honored his late co-star, Sam Shepard, by recording the audiobook to Shepard’s final work of fiction. On December 5, Knopf Doubleday will release “Spy of the First Person,” the story of a nearly-immobilized man who looks back on his life while undergoing medical testing.
Shepard died of Als complications in July at age 73, leaving behind a legacy that includes more than 60 film roles and 55 penned plays. “Buried Child” won him the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979; five years later, Shepard earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for “The Right Stuff.”

Shannon, himself a two-time Oscar nominee in that category, appeared with Shepard in films such as “Mud” and “Midnight Special.” In addition, the “Shape of Water” actor performed as several Shepard-created characters onstage. December is usually known to be the best month at the movies.
That's because it's crunch time for awards season. That coveted last week of the year is where most heavy hitters want to be released, because they'll be freshest in the minds of Oscar voters. And then some years we're extra lucky and get a new Star Wars film as our cherry on top. This is one of those years. Not only do we have tons of highly anticipated festival fare, but a new Star Wars film, a re-boot of Jumanji, and a fantastical masterpiece from Guillermo Del Toro.
These are the movies you have to see this December:

Guillermo del Toro’s movies are always a treat for the eyes, but his latest effort looks like it’s aiming to tug at the heartstrings as well. The first trailer for The Shape of Water teased a love story of the unlikeliest kind – between a mute cleaner and a humanoid sea creature. Now, we have our best look at the film yet with this red band trailer that teases lots of drama, danger and intrigue to come.
We learn that the creature is “the most sensitive asset ever to be housed” at a secret facility in the 1960s. So naturally, Michael Shannon’s boss Colonel Strickland is not happy when Sally Hawkins’ Elisa smuggles the monster out. Not happy is putting it a bit lightly, actually, as the trailer shows that Strickland will stop at nothing in order to get his secret weapon against the Soviets back under lock and key.

Guillermo del Toro has a habit of becoming involved with a wealth of potentially exciting projects, only for the films to eventually stall out or never get off the ground. Thankfully, del Toro was able to turn his latest film, The Shape of Water, into a reality. With an incredible cast that includes Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Lauren Lee Smith, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water is described as an “other-worldly story” set against the backdrop of the Cold War.
Just as he did with the criminally underseen Crimson Peak, del Toro is quick to point out that The Shape of Water is not a horror film, although like Crimson Peak and most del Toro films, it will likely have horror elements. Plot details have been kept vague, but Shape of Water co-star and frequent del Toro collaborator Doug Jones let slip some...

Guillermo del Toro's Cold War film is readying for release.
Fox Searchlight on Wednesday announced The Shape of Water will hit theaters Dec. 8. It currently is the only film with that release date, though it is a prime awards-season spot that will fill up fast.
Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones and Michael Stuhlbarg are among the cast.
The studio's release date announcement was accompanied by an expanded logline for Shape of Water: Set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963, the "other-worldly fairytale" centers on Elisa (Hawkins), a lonely woman who is trapped in...

Water has run dry, robots carry the workload, and children grow up far too quickly in the desolate future of Jake Paltrow’s Young Ones.
This gripping familial drama follows three men at different stages in their life as they navigate a haunting, dangerous world where the scarcity of water has forced the creation of a unique environment. It is part Wild West, part post-apocalyptic future, and all parts arid and hot. It’s so effectively atmospheric, in fact, that you feel like a drink of water or a shower as you watch.
The patriarch of our central family is Ernest Holm, played magnificently (as per usual) by Michael Shannon. He is a protector of his two children (Kodi Smit-McPhee and Elle Fanning), imposing and determined, making a living working supply routes and tending desperately to his farm land. Ernest doesn’t hesitate to do away with two apparent water thieves as the film begins,...

Water is scarce in Young Ones, Jake Paltrow’s latest film, but tension is everywhere as the world fights over the now-precious resource.
The futuristic film, which first premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, stars Michael Shannon, Elle Fanning, and Kodi Smit-McPhee as a family struggling to find water in the barren Western-like wasteland opposite Nicholas Hoult, a teenager trying to take over the family’s land for himself.
Screen Media bought the U.S. rights to the film at its Cannes debut in May and is aiming for an October 2014 release, although an official date hasn’t been announced yet.

We have reached the final ten films in my 2014 Oscar Preview, which has been made up of 40 potential 2014 Oscar contenders and, as we all know, I'm sure to have missed more than a handful. However, I think today's batch has more than a few gems to keep an eye on, many of which made my list of most anticipated films of 2013. This list also includes the one movie of the entire 40 that has the best chance of being pushed to next year, but it would be foolish to leave it off until we know for sure. You probably know what film I'm talking about, but if you don't I'm sure the next paragraph will give it away. This final list of ten films begins with Prisoners from Incendies helmer Denis Villeneuve and starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal alongside Melissa Leo and Viola Davis, next is Brad Furman's Runner,...

Last week saw the release of the second season of the brilliant The Walking Dead, one of the best and most talked-about television programmes currently on the air – and about to kick off with its anticipated third season.
And this week brings with it the release of one of the year’s most successful films in the form of The Hunger Games, very much one of the biggest blockbusters of 2012, beginning what is set to become an immense franchise in the years to come.
There are a lot of films coming to the shelves this week, so I shall press on.
My picks of the week:
Gary Ross’ The Hunger Games & Lasse Hallström’s Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.
The Office: An American Workplace – Season 7 & Boardwalk Empire – Season 2.
And, of course, the Blu-ray release of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws.

It was the year Harry Potter ended, the Muppets returned, Ryan Gosling drove, Apes rose, Matt Damon bought a zoo, and a bunch of raunchy Bridesmaids made us pee our pants (or wedding dresses) laughing.
Yeah, we're pretty happy with you, 2011 movies.
As for counting down the best of the best, we're happy/relieved to report that coming to an in-house consensus was pretty easy, and entirely non-violent. And our number one pick? Even easier to decide.

Michael Shannon talks pretty much nonstop through Craig Wright's "Mistakes Were Made," currently running at Off-Broadway's Barrow Street Theatre. "Talks," however, is a feeble verb for what Shannon does as Felix Artifex, a fifth-rate Broadway producer putting all his eggs in one basket: a production of a play set during the French Revolution and also called "Mistakes Were Made." In a performance that Back Stage critic Erik Haagensen labeled "a tour de force turn" and likened to "Leonard Bernstein conducting a piece of Mahler's," Shannon crows, cajoles, screams, whispers, wheedles, blurts, shouts, hollers, shrieks, blasts, foghorns, whines, whimpers, and gently banters. Most astonishing is that, though portraying the comically pathetic and somehow terrifying Artifex is clearly testing the limits of Shannon's voice, the actor never lets it seem as if the pyrotechnic display is endangering his vocal cords. How does the guy—also showing up on HBO these days...
