Urban legend reference!
ericstevenson30 July 2017
This episode was another really weird one because it was actually the pokemon anime's attempt at political satire. Yeah, this episode features a corrupt mayor who's running for re-election and trying to cover up something he did. There's even a scene where a statue of him is toppled down, something you identify with in a political downfall. This episode actually referenced the urban legend about alligators being in the sewers. In this legend, the alligators have gotten huge from being down there. I didn't think Bulbasaur was based on an alligator.

I thought he was based on a dinosaur of some kind. I guess this was before the creators came up with the ideas of Totodile and its evolutions. It's kind of unsettling that this episode takes place in the sewers. Then again, the liquid looks just like plain water. There's even this really cute joke that happens at the very end that I won't spoil. It's fascinating how many things pokemon has done but given that it's had hundreds of episodes, that's not surprising. I just loved this ep because of how wacky it got! ***1/2
