Exclusive Interview: Zach Gilford (Dare)

21 hours ago | ScreenStar | See recent ScreenStar news »

Writer/Director team David Brind and Adam Salky were the bells of the ball at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah last year. The team who met at Columbia Film School brought their prized procession Dare (2009) starring Emmy Rossum, Zach Gilford, and Ashley Springer to the event. Hailed as of the greats, fans were dying to get a chance to see the challenging, daring, and heartwarming film that Sundance fell in love with. Dare (2009) opens November 13th and it is not your typical high school film; it is a film about three students who have eye-opening, self-exploration through their adolescence. PopStar spoke with star Zach Gilford about getting involved in the project, how serotypes affected his own life, and of course we had to squeeze some Friday Night Lights (TV) info out of him. This is such a great story, can you tell us how you got involved in the project? »

You can send any/all of the above to ausielloscoop@ew.com Question: Is Izzie really pregnant on Grey's Anatomy? —Elle Ausiello: I'll say this: ABC's promo gurus are very sneaky! While we're on the subject of Katherine Heigl, sources confirm to me exclusively that she's taking another leave of absence from Grey's — but this time her reasons are personal, not professional. Heigl will be going on a belated maternity leave to spend some Qt with new daughter Naleigh. As a result, Izzie »

The Blind Side Giveaway

11 November 2009 5:17 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Opening on November 20th is director John Lee Hancock’s The Blind Side, which stars Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw and Kathy Bates. I’ll admit when I sat down to watch The Blind Side, I really didn’t expect much.  I thought it would be a Lifetime movie of the week except on the big screen.  But even though I walked in ready to dismiss the film, I’m forced to say The Blind Side was a lot better than I expected and I enjoyed the way it mixed a few different genres together.  What you need to know is, The Blind Side is both a football movie and a family values film.  It’s also a bit of a comedy.  When films try and mix genres like this, you almost always end in disaster.  So I have to give credit to director John Lee Hancock for crafting a film »

"Dare" is Daring, But Could Be Bolder With Gay Theme

11 November 2009 8:50 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

(L to r) Ashley Springer, Emmy Rossum and Zach Gilford in Dare

One of the great lessons of adulthood is that adolescence sucks for pretty much everyone. Whether you’re the nerd working the lights for the drama club, the golden boy with the big house and the often-absent parents or the Type-a, hard-working good girl, the teen years are a nightmare of self-doubt, identity confusion and hormonal imbalances.

Writer David Brind and director Adam Salky don’t sugarcoat adolescent anxiety in Dare, their new feature based on their short film of the same name, even though the action plays out in a leafy suburb populated with spacious, well-appointed homes.

The film’s central triangle involves Alexa (Emmy Rossum), who’s got aspirations of being an actress; nerdy Ben (Ashley Springer), her lifelong pal who’s otherwise a friendless loner; and handsome Johnny (Zach Gilford, Friday Night Lights), whose encounter »

Interview With Kevin Rankin: "Trauma" Character Just Happens to be a Gay Emt

9 November 2009 2:52 PM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Talk about traumatic!

NBC recently announced that they are canceling Trauma, their new show about paramedics set in San Francisco (although they have said they will air the remaining few episodes).

This is a shame for gay viewers, because the show's cast includes Tyler, a major gay character who is actually complicated and gets actual screentime. In the October 26th Halloween episode “Masquerade,” Tyler, played by Kevin Rankin, revealed a mask of a different kind when he came out to his riding partner, Boone, an African American man who is clearly uncomfortable with gays.

In other words, the show is "going there" on the complicated emotions and politics of homophobia in the African American community.

Recently, we talked to Kevin, who might also be familiar to viewers from his reoccurring role as a paralyzed athelete on Friday Night Lights. The interview took place before NBC had made a final decision regarding Trauma's fate. »

Richard Curtis sets out to the high seas to rock our world, Roland Emmerich just obliterates it and Wes Anderson reenvisions it in stop-motion animation, while as a group of documentaries ponder real world issues of war, God, poverty and Glenn Gould.

"2012"

On behalf of moviegoers everywhere, we here at IFC would like to thank that schoolyard bully who must have so traumatized a young Roland Emmerich that he has spent his recent career ritualistically laying waste to our world one famous landmark at a time. Having previous employed such excuses for mass destruction as alien invasions and global warming, this time cinema's most destructive director turns to an ancient Mayan prophecy that foretells the end of all mankind, and once again batters humanity -- specifically John Cusack and assorted stragglers -- like the »

Friday Night Lights Preview: "In the Skin of a Lion"

9 November 2009 5:15 AM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Last week's installment of Friday Night Lights ended with Coach Taylor wondering where he'll get money for new uniforms, after he and the Lions burned those of East Dillon.

It's unclear if the Taylors will foot the bill, but it is known that Eric and Tami will have it out over their finances on Wednesday's new episode.

The (incredible!) show is currently airing on Directv and will return to NBC some time in 2010. For those following it now, however, check out the official promo below.

It hypes growing tension between East Dillon's top two players, Luke and Vince:

Aliens, Another Reason to Get Excited for Battleship

8 November 2009 10:10 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

I was trying to remain positive about this upcoming Battleship movie because I think director Peter Berg has the potential to be great, but he's making it really hard for me right now. Latino Review got the scoop a few days ago that the big bad in Battleship won't be Nazis, reverse vampires, or ominous looking pegs. Instead, it's aliens. With this news I'm getting the sinking feeling that we're not getting the promising Peter Berg who gave us The Rundown, The Kingdom, and helped bring the fantastic Friday Night Lights to television---instead, I'm envisioning the guy who gave us Hancock. That the film is coming from the brother writing team Jon and Erich Hoeber, they who gave us Whiteout, is no more heartening. Then again, I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised. What we're getting is a film adaptation of a Hasbro board game, and just like this year's G. »

Friday Night Lights Review: "After the Fall"

8 November 2009 10:25 AM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Better late than never, right? We know Friday Night Lights airs on Wednesday evenings, but we were unable to get to this review until today.

Still, rather than give up on it entirely, we're following Coach Taylor's advice to the Lions and we're finishing this fight!

Friday Night Lights, perhaps more than any show on television, has always focused on its characters. There have rarely been major, suspenseful storylines (we're gonna pretend like the Landry killing never happened) to drive a season, just an in-depth look at various characters we've grown to love, played by incredible, gifted actors.

But the East Dillon storyline has given the series something new and exciting: a battlefield. There's clear good versus evil. Even when Buddy was a foil to Eric early in the show's run, there was always a lovable, vulnerable side to the character. But the same can't be said for Joe McCoy and Wade Aikman. »

"Friday Night Lights" Speaks to the Realities of Hard Economic Times

3 November 2009 1:41 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Much like the working-class citizens of Dillon, the small Texas town in which it is set, Friday Night Lights hasn't had it easy during its three years on television. It has never commanded high ratings, it has never enjoyed the support of Emmy voters and it would not have survived beyond its sophomore season without the combined support of two television companies, NBC Universal and DirecTV, which share telecast rights. (Lights made its Season 4 premiere last week on DirecTV and will run on NBC sometime next year.) Critics love Lights, and it has a devoted (if small) fan base, but beyond that life has been unaccountably hard for this outstanding show. So what's been the problem? I think it has something to do with timing. Lights debuted back in 2006, when unprecedented greed was consuming much of the country, including... »

Forget home runs, some of the baseball stars slugging it out in this year's World Series are just worth taking home! Two of the Philadelphia Phillies hotties turning heads this season are 30-year-old Chase Utley at second base and pitcher Cole Hamels, 25. Sorry, ladies, they both may be easy on the eyes, but they're spoken for. Utley married college sweetheart (and fellow animal lover) Jennifer Cooper in 2007. He hails from California and comes up to bat to the song "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin. Hamels's wife may be familiar to Survivor fans - Heidi Strobel was a contestant on the sixth season of the reality show. »
