“Reacher” just wrapped its second season on Prime Video.
This time around Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson), had to team with members of his old army squad, in an effort to figure out who is dropping them out of helicopters one-by-one. (That age-old conundrum.)
One of those team members is, of course, Frances Neagley, played by Maria Sten, one of Reacher’s sole allies in the outside world. She showed up in Season 1 and immediately became a fan favorite, even though the character didn’t appear in the book the inaugural season was based on.
Sten is confirmed to return in Season 3, which this time is based on Lee Child’s “Persuader,” another book that Neagley actually doesn’t show up in. Meaning Sten and her performance transcend the dogged commitment to the source material. She’s more chipper and richer than the smart-aleck Reacher, and their chemistry is palpable on screen.

Harlan County, USA
Filmmakers loves an underdog and movies have a long tradition of supporting the rights of workers, dating all the way back to the silent era. Here are some classic movies that celebrate workers’ right to strike for better wages and safer working conditions and the sometimes unlikely allies they find along the way. Many are based on true stories, including John Sayles’ masterful “Matewan,” about a coal miner strike in West Virginia, as well as Barbara Kopple’s Oscar-winning documentary, “Harlan County, USA.”

“Newsies” (1992)
“Headlines don’t sell papes, Newsies sell papes!” In this exuberant and pro-worker musical, Christian Bale’s Jack Kelly leads a group of newsboys in a strike against penny-pinching newspaper owner Joseph Pulitzer. They’re aided by Bill Pullman’s kindly, reform-minded journalist and, of course, Teddy Roosevelt, who was then governor of New York.

Jack Reacher is the hero we deserve, a massive hulk of a man whose incredible physicality matches his sharp wit and intellect. He's the perfect dude, capable of taking down armies with nothing but his bare hands while outwitting the most cunning of villains.
I've read almost all of Lee Child's sprawling book series featuring Reacher. Each comes jam-packed with intricate plots, violent criminals, and beautiful women. Think James Bond with more violence and fewer jokes.
Reacher's journey to the screen kicked off with the brilliant Tom Cruise vehicle "Jack Reacher," but has since found new life in the form of Amazon's "Reacher," starring Alan Ritchson in the title role. The series, adapted from Child's first novel, "The Killing Floor," is a dream come true and perfectly captures the character's nature without compromise. That includes a flurry of fight sequences that pit our muscle-packing hero against swarms of enemies,...

Alice, Darling (Mary Nighy)
Everything you need to know about Alice’s (Anna Kendrick) state of mind concerning the abuse inflicted by her boyfriend Simon (Charlie Carrick) are the words “it’s not like he hurts me.” We feel Sophie’s (Wunmi Mosaku) wince in our bones—”hurt” doesn’t only become noteworthy when wrought by a physical altercation. Alice is glued to her phone to ensure she doesn’t miss a call or text. She wakes up super early to apply make-up and style her hair to Simon’s preference. “Great actors fall into darkness backwards,” Bill Duke likes to say, quoting an early teacher of his who suggested that the leap of faith required for someone to become the person they imagine in their mind requires a sense of self-belief powerful enough to overcome their fear of the unknown. Not only has Duke consistently done that over the course of the actor-director’s 40-plus-year career, he’s done it with an unparalleled degree of excellence and grace.
While cinephiles and casual fans alike may be familiar with Duke’s performances in films like “Predator” and “Menace II Society,” few recognize the full impact of his contributions behind the camera during the ’90s, when he hit his stride with a series of major and enduring work that range from “A Rage in Harlem” and the masterful neo-noir “Deep Cover” to the beloved crowdpleaser “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.

Jack Reacher is famously a drifter, a hobo. He doesnt stay in one place for long. Having righted wrongs in sleepy Margrave, Ga. with its freshman run, where will Prime Video’s Reacher travel to next? Which of Lee Child’s 25 other novels will it use as a road map?
Season 1 of Prime Video’s already-renewed hit adapted Child’s first Jack Reacher, The Killing Floor. Child’s dozens of subsequent novels about the mountain of a former military man sent him to other small towns, but also big cities. He has dealt with local, intimate threats, but he has also protected a Vice President-Elect.

Yes, sure, all the new films are exciting and sure to dominate discourse from here to January, but every year (i.e. when a pandemic doesn’t kneecap them) the Cannes Film Festival provides an equal-if-not-greater service: Cannes Classics, their mix of favorite and soon-to-be-discovered films from yesteryear.
2021’s lineup is representative of that variety, offering as it does Orson Welles and David Lynch alongside an early Raoul Peck feature (restored by Scorsese’s World Cinema Project), Tilda Swinton’s screen debut, a lesser-seen Masahiro Shinoda, and (frankly!) names that don’t ring a bell.
Take a look at the list below, with hope that these will make their way to American shores.

With Jack Ryan still awaiting its third season, Amazon’s supply of action heroes named Jack R. was running perilously low. Thankfully, the streamer announced today that it has cast the titular hero in its upcoming Jack Reacher TV series.
Alan Ritchson (Titans) will play the enormous lead in Amazon’s upcoming show based on Lee Child’s bestselling series of books.
We say “enormous lead” because, in addition to being an ex-Army major in the military police, Jack Reacher’s whole deal is being an absolute unit. Child’s beefy creation is said to be 6’5 and top the scales around 250 pounds. A popular pastime on social media is finding passages from Child’s books that describe Reacher’s mass and configurations in increasingly hyperbolic ways. The protagonist has been described as having fists the size of supermarket chickens, Thanksgiving turkeys, and dinner plates.

Alan Ritchson has lined up his next TV role, and it's a big one.
He's landed the title role on Amazon's Jack Reacher.
Ritchson is currently starring on DC Universe drama series Titans in the role of Hank Hall, aka Hawk.
He recurred on Titans Season 1, but was promoted to series regular for Titans Season 2, and is expected to appear on the forthcoming Titans Season 3.
There's no word yet on whether his role will be scaled back on the superhero drama's third season due to his new role.
Ritchson is also well-known for his one season run on Blood Drive, as well as playing superhero Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman on The CW's Smallville.
Jack Reacher nabbed a series order at the streamer earlier this year at Amazon's turn at the Television Critics Association.
Based on Lee Child's novels, the freshman season will follow The Killing Floor, the first Jack Reacher novel.

In today’s film news roundup, a Bella Thorne crime drama is shooting, Cinepolis is expanding in the Us and Bill Duke’s “The Killing Floor” is acquired.
Production Start
Bella Thorne’s crime drama “Southland” has begun production in Oklahoma with Joshua Caldwell directing from his own script.
The story follows two young lovers who rob their way across the southland, posting their exploits to social media and gaining fame and followers along the way. The film also stars Jake Manley (“The Order”), Amber Riley (“Glee”) and Michael Sirow.
“I could not have shot ‘Southland’ anywhere but in Oklahoma,” said Caldwell. “Its geographical diversity allows it to stand in for a multitude of other locations, including Florida and Texas, and the land on which this state rests is both haunting and beautiful.”
“Southland” began principal photography in Guthrie and will continue throughout the month filming in multiple communities in the central Oklahoma region.

Having carved out a successful career on television, co-creating Homeland and Tyrant, Gideon Raff is now setting his sights on getting back to the movies. He's already attached to adapt Alice Laplante's novel Turn Of Mind for Fox, and he's now also sold his treatment for Operation Brothers to the same studio. Raff will write, produce and direct the film, based on the true story of the evacuation of Jewish Ethiopian Civil War refugees from from Sudan to Israel in the late 1970s and early '80s. On the orders of then-Prime Minister Menachem Begin, Mossad set up a secret base in a deserted Sudanese holiday camp, and orchestrated the mass extraction by sea and air. It's Argo meets Exodus, is no doubt the pitch somewhere. Alexandra Milchan (The Wolf Of Wall Street) is producing.Raff was an assistant to Doug Liman on Mr. & Mrs Smith before going on...

Rick Alverson's not-comedy, The Comedy, is currently one of my favorite films of the year. It haunts me. It is, and I quote myself, "hilarious, transgressive, brilliant, and most people will find it unwatchable." But that doesn't mean you shouldn't give it a shot. For the unaware, it is a character study about an aging hipster douche named Swanson, played with unnerving commitment by comedian Tim Heidecker. I am a fan of Heidecker's work, and let me assure you-- The Comedy is some of his best. So I made a quick foray to the reRun theater in Brooklyn to meet the man and his director for a chat. I'm led up a dark stairwell with the other writers, like cattle. The killing floor is an open...

Gideon Raff grew up in Israel but studied film in Los Angeles, a stay that was intended to be for two years but turned into nine after he got a job as Doug Liman’s assistant on "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." He made two features in the Us -- 2007's "The Killing Floor" and the 2008 Thora Birch-led thriller "Train" -- before making his way back to his native country, where he created a TV series called "Prisoners of War" (in Hebrew, "Hatufim") about Israeli soldiers returning home from 17 years of captivity about being caught while on an intelligence mission in Lebanon. It caught the attention of "24" producers Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon -- "and that show immediately drew me back here with 'Homeland,'" Raff points out. In keeping with Raff's continent- and culture-spanning career, the writer/director/producer has been simultaenously working on the second seasons of both the Israeli.

*full disclosure: an e-book of this novel was provided by Permuted Press. Writer: Craig Dilouie. Craig Dilouie's The Killing Floor is a sequel to his earlier novel, The Infection. This latest showing was released April 9th by Permuted Press, withThe Infection released late in 2011. This reviewer has read both books. The transition from the first novel into this second outing is fairly seamless. The recurrence of characters such as Anne, Ray, Todd and a few others brought back memories of The Infection quickly. Unfortunately, some of the characters will not find themselves in the final chapters of this 278 page thriller. And this really is an exciting novel. The American Army does their best to fight off and win against an infection. That infection created 'the scream' with about a 1/5 of the world's population falling asleep temporarily. They awaken murderous. They are also looking to spread the germ in their bloodstream to others.

Twisted Metal and its soundtrack are coming on Valentine's Day, 2012. The game takes a new approach to the series, relying much more on delivering a well-thought-out story for each protagonist. In addition the four main characters' themes are composed by musician Michael Wandmacher.
The Twisted Metal soundtrack (review here) will feature 35 songs. 15 Will be comprised of classic and more modern songs from various genres, while the other 20 will be all-new tracks composed specifically for the game.
Twisted Metal combines ultimate destruction, dark humor, vehicles, and weapons that act as extensions of each character. The game follows four characters who participate in the Twisted Metal Tournament hosted by Calypso. The tournament results in one lone player, the survivor, to whom Calypso awards one wish- often money or power. However, this time Calypso has much more to offer. At the same time one player is trying to bring Calypso Industries down.

I started working with Dp Martina Radwan about a year ago on the feature documentary, Mentor (addressing bullying and teen suicide in Mentor, Ohio) I further had the pleasure of working with her on a recent music video for the band Shearwater. It is a gift, as a director, to find a Dp who you can quickly fall into a shorthand with, creating your own visual language, and trusting in the collaborative process. Radwan and I found this with each other.

Last week we passed along the Showtime announcement of Homeland a new psychological thriller hour-long drama starring Claire Danes (Temple Grandin) as a CIA officer who is convinced the rescue of a Us soldier (Damien Lewis, Life) is part of a bigger plot to an attack on American soil. Get a sample of the show in this three and a half-minute clip:
Homeland looks like something that would pique the interest of the ‘Rubicon‘ and ‘24‘ fan base. In fact it’s being written and produced by Howard Gordon (24, X-Files), Alex Gansa (24, Entourage, Numb3rs, The X-Files) and Gideon Raff (The Killing Floor, Hatufim). Danes almost always choose interesting and provocative projects so this has the making of another winner. Did this interest you? Share with us your thoughts and whether or not you’re going to watch Homeland later this year.

Warner Bros. has acquired Odysseus, written by Ann Peacock (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), in what the trades are calling “a major spec script bidding war”. Jonathan Liebesman, director of Darkness Falls and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, is attached to direct. The story centers on the legendary hero Odysseus, famed king of Ithaca, who returns to his island after 20 years of fighting the Trojan Wars, only to find his kingdom under the brutal occupation of an invading force. Odysseus single-handedly defeats every last man and takes back his wife, his son and his kingdom. The intent is to make not a sleepy swords-and-sandals epic but a bloody relentless revenge movie, something akin to 300 meets Taken. Gianni Nunnari is producing via his Hollywood Gang Productions. The company also produced Zack Snyder’s 300. Liebesman is also attached to helm Columbia Pictures' apocalyptic thriller Battle: Los Angeles,...
