Could have been weirder
TheLittleSongbird2 November 2020
Any episode that has a healthy dose of Buster and Babs is already at least watchable, have always loved those two characters and consider them my two favourite characters of 'Tiny Toon Adventures'. It is always great when famous stories are riffed in animation and classic Looney Tunes particularly did that well. Elmyra is one of those characters that is inconsistently characterised (character writing-wise that is), there are instances where she's fine but other times where she's annoying.

"Weirdest Story Ever Told" is another one of the segment structured episodes of 'Tiny Toon Adventures' that is mostly successful. Not every one of the three segments work, well one doesn't, but one in particular is extremely well done. The title is a bit on the misleading side as there is actually not an awful lot here that struck me as weird in the episode and in "Robin Hare" and "To Babs or Not to Babs" ("Elmyra's Round the World" applies though).

"Elmyra's Round the World" fared the least of the three segments. Thank goodness for Buster, who is good fun as ever, though there is not much that is funny, it can be too cute and it takes an odd premise and executes it just as strangely. While liking Elmyra in other episodes, she is annoying here.

The other segments fare a lot better. My personal favourite is "Robin Hare", all the Tiny Toon Adventures are in roles absolutely perfect for them and their personalities (with Buster absolutely born for the title character and Montana Max a fun antagonist. It is also the closest the episode comes to being true to the spirit of classic Looney Tunes with the razor sharp wit and wackiness and is vintage 'Tiny Toon Adventures'.

Something that can be said too for "To Babs or Not to Babs". That is also very witty and full of energy with some very funny and affectionate Shakespeare references. It shows off too what is so great about Babs' character and has every single one of her character traits to often hilarious effect.

Did enjoy the wraparound story and it was great to see Foghorn Leghorn. The animation is rich in detail and vibrant, while the music is characterful and full of infectious energy and dynamic orchestration. The theme song is one of early 90s animation's catchiest. The writing is mostly very sharp and witty.

Most of the characters are very well handled, especially Buster and Babs. My only reservation was with Elmyra. The voice acting is great, Tress MacNeille brilliantly showing off her versatility in "To Babs or Not to Babs" and Clive Revill is inspired casting as Shakespeare (yes you saw right).

Overall, very enjoyable segment apart from one segment that didn't quite work. 8/10
