Early twenty-something Ann Marie has recently arrived in New York City from the small town of Brewster, New York to become an actress. Ann is excited to learn from her boyfriend and agent, part native American Don Blue Sky, that she has gotten her first acting role, a small part in a television drama. This job brings up an issue that has been previously discussed between the two: assuming a stage name, as the name "Ann Marie" always brings up the question "Ann-Marie what?" That new name has to be for this job so that the public will know her solely by that new name from the get-go. The problem is that she knows her parents, especially her father, Lew Marie, will not like the idea of her abandoning the name she was given by them. Even though Ann and her friends come up with what they believe is a good compromise stage name - Marie Brewster - Lew threatens to disown Ann if she uses any name besides Ann Marie. Ann has to decide if her parent's blessing is more important than a memorable stage name.
