Even if he had never mentioned having a brother, that's history I buy it.

No brother of mine

Warning: Spoilers
When Starsky's little brother comes for a visit, it's obvious very quickly that he is involved with shady activities. Starsky has to confront his brother about his actions and ultimately save him from being killed by his criminal associates.

This episode spends far too much time on the family drama between Starsky and his brother. Almost the whole first half of the story is just dancing and drinking and hanging out. And conflict developing between brothers. Then we have the typical scene where Starsky confronts the brother for his bad actions, and the brother defends his bad choices by blaming Starsky for deserting him. Guilt, guilt.

The second half puts the brother in harm's way because he didn't listen to his big brother's warnings. There is no clear story here to understand why the criminal uses Starsky's brother the way he does. This part of the story might have had more time to develop and been more clear if most of the first half hadn't been a waste of time.

I agree with Hutch's line in the middle of the story when he says to the brother, I don't really care about you, but I do care about Starsky. I care so little about the brother that I can't even remember his first name.

I have read somewhere that the introduction of another character named Starsky was a potential concept to continue the show without PMG. If those involved with the show didn't realize that this was a pipe dream before, they had to know it by the time this episode was in the can.
