Quotes

  • Ishka : Oh, it's good to see you, son. You look well.

Rom : And you look... dressed!

Brunt : Your mother... is wearing clothes.

Quark : Mother! Get undressed this instant!

  • Ishka : Quark, sometimes you can be so thick-headed!

Rom : Now, Moogie, there's no need to be insulting...

Ishka : Of course there is!

  • Quark : She may have dragged father down, but she's not doing the same to me. It's time someone put her in her place.

Ishka : [from behind]  Have anyone in mind for the job?

  • Ishka : Since when does a Ferengi have to make excuses for making profit?

    Quark : You're a female!

Ishka : And when it comes to profit, this female is a better Ferengi than you'll ever be!

  • Quark : Females are not allowed to earn profit!

    Ishka : Why not?

Quark : Because it's the law, and without law, society would descend into chaos.

Ishka : If you ask me, this society could use a little chaos.

  • Ishka : Rom's a lot like his father. And you... I suppose are a lot like me.

Quark : I never knew you felt like that.

Ishka : Your father might have bought you your first copy of the Rules of Acquisition. But who helped you memorize them?

    Quark : You did.

Ishka : I don't think I've ever been prouder... than the first time you made it through all 285 rules without a mistake!

Quark : [humbly]  Rom knows them just as well as I do.

Ishka : But *you* understand them. Rom never did, and neither did his father. But even if Keldar didn't know the first thing about profit, he knew everything about family. He was a good husband, and a wonderful father, and I loved him for that. The way I love Rom. And the way I love you.

  • [Rom is forcing Quark and Ishka to talk to one another and Quark and Ishka are not happy]

Quark : [angrily turning away]  There's nothing to discuss!

Ishka : [also angrily turning away]  Don't let your lobes get caught on the way out!

Rom : [losing his patience; shouting angrily]  That's enough bickering! You're both acting like children!

[Ishka and Quark round at him to protest, but Rom cuts them off before either one can say anything]

Rom : I will NOT stand by and watch this family fall apart! Quark, You should be ashamed of yourself! I have seen you treat Cardassians with more respect than you show your mother! And Moogie, if Quark can uncover your investments, the FCA will too! And then all that profit will be lost! Think about THAT for a moment!

[Quark and Ishka stare at Rom, both ashamed of themselves and shocked by Rom's outburst]

Rom : Now... *Neither of you* is going to *leave* this room until you have settle things! *Is that clear?*

[Quark and Ishka silently obey as they sit on the couch, still staring at Rom like shamefaced children]

Rom : [shouts]  AND NO SHOUTING!

    [calmly]

Rom : I'm going to take a nap.

[Rom leaves the room. Quark and Ishka watch him go, both shaken and amazed by Rom's advocating]

  • Ishka : [to Quark; about Rom]  He takes after his father.

Quark : You enjoy insulting Father, don't you?

Ishka : [gently]  I'm not insulting anyone; I'm just being honest. Rom's a lot like his father, and you... I suppose you're a lot like me.

Quark : [genuinely surprised]  I never knew you felt that way.

Ishka : Your father may have bought you your first copy of the Rules of Acquisition, but who helped you memorize them?

    Quark : [softly]  You did.

Ishka : [proudly; as Quark smiles at the memory as well]  I don;t think I've ever been prouder than the first time you made it through all two hundred rules without making a mistake.

Quark : [humbly]  Rom knows them just as well as I do.

Ishka : But *you* understand them. Rom never did. And neither did his father. But even if Keldar didn't know the first thing about profit... he knew *everything* about family.

    [warmly and wholeheartedly]

Ishka : He was a good husband and a wonderful father. And I loved him for that. The same way I love Rom. The same way I love you.

Quark : [very genuinely surprised and deeply touched]  You mean that?

Ishka : [nods]  Yes. I suppose I do.

    [pause]

Ishka : If it'll make you happy, I'll give back the money.

Quark : [very, very surprised]  You'll imprint the confession?

Ishka : [lovingly]  You're my son Quark, how can I ever refuse you?

Quark : You don't know how much this means to me!

Ishka : *I* know *exactly* how much it means to you.

[Quark and Ishka exchange a laugh; the animosity they have felt towards each other finally gone]

Quark : [full of genuine love for the first time]  Oh, Moogie... I love you.

[Mother and son embrace; with Quark lying down on his mother's lap and Ishka lovingly caresses him. Their reconciliation complete]
