Manipulation
claudio_carvalho28 May 2006
The student from the Balkans and bookmaker Mikhail Mxyzptlk (Trent Ford) has the power of manipulation, using his abilities to gamble. Chloe Sullivan is writing an article about the underworld of bets, and gets closer to Mikhail. The bookie stakes with Lex Luthor against The Crows, threatening Chloe and Clark to win the bet. Lex discloses the relationship of Lana Lang, and Jason Teague is fired, in spite of winning the championship.

"Jinx" is a great episode of "Smallville", apparently giving new directions to the show. The friendship of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor is very unstable; Jason Teague is no longer the coach of The Crows; Lana Lang is upset again with Clark Kent; and Clark is following a career of successful football player and idol and leader of his team. My vote is nine.

Pretty solid... jinx

If it wasn't for the horrible acting and voice of Trent Ford this would be a 9 vote. I really like how the series re-imagines the origins of Superman's characters but a Russian exchange student is the worst idea they could have had. I wish they could have built the character of Mxyzptlk be more of an arc for the season and not just an episode. Then again, with such a lame duck for an actor with an even lamer accent I am glad.

And the resolution of the Jason and Lana relationship coming to an end at the end of the show was a little rushed and out of nowhere in my opinion.

Mr. Mxyzptlk

A famous Superman villain takes a whole different form in this great episode of the fourth season.

Mikhail Mxyzptlk is a foreign student attending Smallville High on a prestigious Luthor scholarship. As an average student in the Balkans, Lex is suspicious as to why Lionel awarded the scholarship to Mxyzptlk. As it turns out, Mxyzptlk can control other's physical actions through the power of suggestion. He tries to throw the high school football semifinal game to make Smallville High lose, which causes Clark to brutally injure an opposing player, who breaks his collarbone in two places. As a result, the issue comes up between Clark and his father over whether it is safe, and right, to play football. Jonathan doesn't want Clark to play in the championship game with the concern that a similar thing could happen, especially with Mxyzptlk around. In the championship game, Clark must not only worry about leading his team to the winning drive, but also saving Chloe's life from Mxyzptlk at the same time. Also, Lana's boyfriend Jason Teague is fired from the school after the game, and Lana blames it on Clark.

In addition, at the end of the episode Lex takes Mxyzptlk to an interesting LuthorCorp level called 33.1 to show Mikhail "people who are just like him." This episode is awesome because it involves a Superman character from the comics, has a great save scene at the end during the football game, and because of the 33.1 revelation at the end of the episode.

Watch out for black cats!

This episode was a finely crafted sports 'centric chapter with a number of great features.

A Romanian foreign exchange student is a slimy bookie with a supernatural ancestry that aids him in his bets. He is as dangerous as he is lucky.

There are a number of things that happen with Lex in this episode which reveal a number of very dark parts of his personality, it is really quite intriguing.

CIark has a fair challenge on his hands and the end game is really quite an entertaining result/watch.

I would give this one a 9 but I give it 8 instead because this show keeps on playing terrible music(in this one it is Green Day's worst song). Every now and then there will be a great tune in this series, but nearly always it is just awful.

Game on!
