The title is based on Matthew 16:8 - "Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?"
The song that Homer sings while flossing his teeth is a parody of Devo's "Whip It" from their "Freedom Of Choice album.
One of the businesses adverting in the church is called "Let's Get Fiscal" Financial planning. This is a reference to Olivia Newton-John's "Let's Get Physical". The song itself would later be heard in Homer and Ned's Hail Mary Pass (2005).
After the church is rebuilt as a commercial, money-making enterprise, someone in the church is calling out, "Get your money changed here!" This refers to the "Cleansing of the Temple", when Jesus threw the merchants and money-changers out of the Temple, a story reported in all four Gospels of the New Testament. Jesus objected to turning a holy place of worship into a "house of trade" and a "den of thieves."
Couch: The couch is a slot machine that shows Homer, Marge, Bart, and Lisa in the windows. Maggie, however, is replaced by lucky number "7" as a jackpot siren wails and a pile of gold coins spill out.
