Joe Mantegna appears in the commentary for this episode, despite not voicing Fat Tony or having any type of involvement with Jaws Wired Shut
The last scene, in which Homer rescues Marge from the demolition derby, is a takeoff on classic Popeye cartoons, with Homer using beer instead of spinach.
The desert island float with the lesbians in the gay pride parade was called "Lesbians Of The Caribbean". This is a reference to the Pirates Of The Caribbean ride at Disneyland in California. The island itself resembles a scene at the end of the first waterfall drop, and the lesbians chasing other women around trees is reminiscent of the Spanish Villa scene that showed pirates chasing women around in circles. The song sung goes "yo ho ho it's an alternative lifestyle for me", is a spoof of the song on the ride: "Yo ho ho it's a pirate's life for me".
This episode is referenced on page 13 of the novelization of the 2004 global warming disaster movie "The Day After Tomorrow", by Whitley Streiber based on the script for that film by writer/director Roland Emmerich. The scene in the book describes main character Sam Hall enjoying watching this episode's climax on TV in his dad's apartment before he turns off the TV before studying with his two schoolmates Laura and Brian. This scene was filmed but cut from the film; it's included as a deleted scene on the Blu-Ray of "The Day After Tomorrow", and given the title "Kids Study", but only a brief blurred clip of the main opening sequence of "The Simpsons" is shown on the TV, with its famous theme song playing for a few seconds.
