Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: [to young woman wearing hot pants and skimpy top] Excuse me, are you Anne Bishop?
Anne Bishop: Depends.
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: [takes off her sunglasses] I'm Sergeant St. John of Palm Beach Police.
Anne Bishop: You don't look like a cop.
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: Well, you don't look like a dive shop owner.
Anne Bishop: This is Palm Beach.
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: I'm sure.
Anne Bishop: Hey, I've got a bone to pick with you.
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: Yeah, what's up?
Anne Bishop: Yeah, I got all my stuff back from your evidence guys, except my econo scuba knife. Serated blade about a foot long, not cheap.
[shakes her head]
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: I'll have the station check it out.
Anne Bishop: I'd appreciate it. So, I thought you homicide detectives worked in teams?
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: We do. My partner's on his way back to Miami now.
Anne Bishop: So what's he like?
[smiles]
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: Ryan? He's okay. Actually, he's more than okay.
Anne Bishop: Is he... single?
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: Beg your pardon?
Anne Bishop: Hey, most of the male customers I get around here can double for Moby Dick.
[Cassy chuckles]
Anne Bishop: Any chance I get to meet a good-looking guy, I... I grab it.
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: Well, I'll tell you what. I'll have him come over and ask you some questions.
Anne Bishop: [smiles] I'd appreciate that.
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: Hey, what do you know about Madelein Kidd?
Anne Bishop: Nothing more than what I got off the driver's license when she rented the gear.
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: Did you know she was alone when you rented to her?
Anne Bishop: I always try to buddy people up, but... she was adamant about going solo. She had a sea card, she knew the risk.
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: Did she ever mention the Santa Marta?
Anne Bishop: She didn't mention much about anything. But... divers are like that. One of the reasons they love the sport. Divine silence. So, uh, do you dive?
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: I took a weekend course in Cayman last year. But I just don't have much of a chance to dive around here.
Anne Bishop: Well, what about your partner?
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: Well, Sergeant Ryan and the ocean aren't the best friends. He was caught in a riptide when he was five.
Anne Bishop: Mm. Too bad. Diving is like total freedom. No rules, no regulations. You can do anything you want down there. You know what the best way to dive is?
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: [shakes her head] What's that?
Anne Bishop: Totally nude. Not a stitch. The water on your skin is just like a... all-body massage. Shame you won't reconsider.
[shakes her head]
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: Well, I'll tell you what, you broach it to him like that, and, uh...
Anne Bishop: Yeah, worth a shot.
[on her way]
Det. Sgt. Cassandra 'Cassy' St. John: [chuckles skeptically] Yeah...
[follows]
This time, the main female characters are a cop, a diving equipment provider (dibs!), a salvage valuation expert and, unfortunately only briefly to kick off the story, a private detective. Each is super hot. Each is also highly implausible in her role. But who cares? Here in my room in cold, wet, grey London, I can only gawk at these sun-kissed, perfectly formed examples of the fairer sex and say, "God bless America!"
PS - There's a plot, things happen, and people do stuff. But that's a discussion for another time.
