- Remington and Laura disagree on whether to provide security for a cursed painting. A woman from Remington's past appears. Laura's interfering mother comes for a visit.
- Remington () is approached by an Edward Coxworth () and curator Ahmed Kalil () to investigate the attempted theft of a famous painting. He refuses, however, claiming that there is a curse on the piece, and Laura () is frustrated that he is turning down work. He begs her to trust him, but she remains irritated and pursues the case, and matters are soon made worse by the sudden arrival of her mother, Abigail (). She meets Laura's "boss," Remington, and Laura explains to him that they "dont communicate very well." When they head to the museum, they inquire about the alarm systems and meet Ahmed's assistant, Catherine (), who explains about the alleged curse on the painting, saying that the last five owners died mysteriously. When they are alone, however, she plants a romantic kiss on Remington, saying they are "back together" and that he is the one who will steal the painting.
As Abigail offers her criticisms of Laura's life, Murphy () arrives with background on the artwork, saying it was previously stolen by a Michael OLeary, and Laura recalls that that was one of Remington's former aliases. Not wanting to suspect him, she tells Murphy to look into the museum employees. Laura then goes to Remington's apartment and tries to indirectly ask him about his past, but they are both surprised when Catherine exits the bedroom as though she has been there all along, and Laura leaves in a huff and is grabbed by a mysterious man in the elevator. Catherine, whose real name is revealed to be Felicia, argues with Remington and suggests that they take the painting once and for all and disappear together, threatening to expose him if he refuses and accusing him of being "smitten" with Laura. Laura is taken to a man named Sherman (), who berates the kidnapper, Gutman (), for snatching the wrong woman, as they were after Felicia, but Laura manages to get away. At the office, Abigail admits that she lies to the family about what Laura does for a living, and Laura suddenly bursts in, amazed that she escaped. As she and Remington argue about the situation, Ahmed appears and drops dead on their doorstep.
After managing to distract Abigail, Laura sets Murphy and Bernice () to investigate and then demands answers from Remington about the painting theft, but he evades her questions. Murphy still believes in his guilt, especially when Remington hatches a plan to steal the painting first so that the real criminals will come to them. He and Laura sneak into the museum after hours and carefully evade the sensors and alarms, and when they separate, he cuts the painting from its frame and escapes by dressing as a guard, but Laura is arrested. Abigail bails her out and Remington seems to have vanished, proving his guilt, and Coxworth arrives, frustrated at Laura's poor investigation. Felicia arrives at Laura's office and says she needed him to protect herself from Gutman, but concludes that he chose to team up with Laura to steal the painting instead. Elsewhere, Remington is captured by Gutman and Sherman, who are revealed to have killed Ahmed because he knew about Felicia's past. Tied up, Remington is allowed to call Laura, but Abigail answers and he only manages to communicate an address to her before she hangs up. Laura and Felicia hurry to the warehouse where Remington is being held and Laura calls Abigail to bring the painting along, although it is soon revealed not to be the painting at all. They overpower the criminals together, and Remington says that the real painting is stashed safely at the museum; he had to pretend to have it to capture the true thieves. Laura apologizes for doubting Remington and asks why he didn't run away with the priceless art, but he merely repeats his claim of a curse.
