- Lister volunteers himself, Rimmer and the rest of the crew for the Canaries, believing it to be the prison choir. They are instead sent on a suicide mission to an ocean moon where they find Cassandra, an AI computer who can see the future.
- Sentenced to 2 years for stealing the confidential reports in 'The Tank' on Floor 13. Lister signs up for the 'Canaries', unaware the 'Canaries' is a convict army and he has also signed up Rimmer, Cat, Kryten and Kochanski. Their first assignment is to investigate a abandoned spaceship on a ocean planet, where they discover Cassandra, a computer that can predict the future. But it spells bad news for Rimmer, when Cassandra predicts that he is going to die.—Daniel Williamson
- Lister has enlisted for a group called the Canaries, hoping to capitalize on the perks available, however he's under the impression that the Canaries are a close-harmony choir, Rimmer informs him that they are actually a convict army, disposable mercenaries. Lister, in his misunderstanding, signed up his companions, including Rimmer. The canaries are debriefed to investigate a shipwreck on an ocean planet with no bodies on board, once on board Kochanski locates the main frame computer.
The computer is named Cassandra, she has the ability to predict the future, Kryten discovers a mission directive that states the ship was sent without a crew on autopilot to dispose of Cassandra as her perfect clairvoyance was dangerous. Cassandra warns that the ship's bulkhead has breached and water is filling up, only Lister, Cat, Kochanski and Kryten survive. Rimmer is to die with the other Canaries.
During a coffee break Rimmer schemes up methods to avoid his death, it occurs to him that Cassandra said Rimmer dies, but not necessarily himself, he has to find someone else he can introduce to Cassandra as Rimmer and they will die. Mr Knot the guard walks in, Rimmer "accidentally" spills coffee on him, swapping jackets with their name tags, then takes him to Cassandra, she predicts he'll die from a heart attack and he does.
Cassandra tells Rimmer he'll still die, she's seen it. Kryten has a suggestion, if they are to survive they are invulnerable to all harm, he tests a gun on all of them, it jams on the intended survivors, Rimmer is warned to duck and a bullet is fired into the wall behind him. Kryten's plan is they'll use their invulnerability to surround Rimmer as lead him back to the diving bell, once they arrive they find Rimmer has vanished, having fallen down an open manhole.
Kochanski rappels down to retrieve him, however the sound of rushing water forces them all into safety, Lister, Kryten and Cat go into the diving bell, Rimmer and Kochanski are back down in the bowels. Rimmer goes to Cassandra to learn how he'll die, according to her, he's making love to Kochanski when Lister spots them and shoots him in the head with a harpoon gun, Rimmer is both astonished and jubilant.
Rimmer sets up a mattress in a utility room, Kochanski is even more astonished but not happy about it, she refuses to partake until Rimmer activates a tap and water sprays on Kochanski. Lister is preparing to go back save Kochanski taking a harpoon gun and finds them before they've started. Lister is not going to kill Rimmer, Kryten figured out why this happened, Cassandra made up the events to get Lister to commit murder, something he wouldn't recover from as a punishment for eventually killing Cassandra, which she always knew how it would happen.
Lister leaves them to see Cassandra, he tells her he has no reason to kill her and he can decide his own future, but she says he will. Tragically, she's proven true, Lister takes gum out of his mouth and sticks it to the wall, it falls onto a fan's on button which blows the gum toward a glass of whiskey which smashes onto her power cables and destroys her, Lister leaves in embarrassment.
