  [Julia reaches Griffin while he's packing his stuff into the car along his dad] 

  Julia Salinger : Griffin?

  Major Chase W. Holbrook : [to Griffin]  We've got a few minutes. I'll wait in the car.

  [he gets inside the car] 

  Julia Salinger : Were you gonna call me?

  Griffin Holbrook : I didn't know if you'd wanna hear from me or not.

  Julia Salinger : How can you say that? I mean, how can you even think that?

  Griffin Holbrook : I just do.

  Julia Salinger : Griffin.

  Griffin Holbrook : You know what? You know, uh, you probably shouldn't write me. Well, 'cause, uh... 'Cause I probably won't write back. You kind of... You kind of need to know that. Just... Just forget about me, okay, Julia?

  Julia Salinger : [saddened]  Stop it, Griffin, don't...

  Griffin Holbrook : No, look at you. And look at me. I don't know. Sometimes I still can't believe that you were mine. Even for a little while.

  Griffin Holbrook : I got... I gotta go.

  [he turns around] 

  Griffin Holbrook : Oh, yeah. I love you. Okay?

  [he gets into the car, and they leave, while Julia sees]

  Major Chase W. Holbrook : Look, um... Why don't you go home, okay? What... is it Julie? I dont feel like talking to anybody right now.

  Julia Salinger : I know. Believe me, I know.

  Major Chase W. Holbrook : No, excuse me. You don't know.

  Julia Salinger : Has Griffin ever told you much about me? Probably not, huh? I mean, you don't even know my name. Major Holbrook, my parents were killed two years ago. So I know what it's like to lose people that you love. And I know what it's like to get mad about things that just happen. I mean, I said, "To hell with everything," you know, for a long time after. I think we're probably a lot alike that way.

  Major Chase W. Holbrook : Please...

  Julia Salinger : But I realize that being mad doesn't make anything better, and it doesn't change anything, and there are still people around that matter. You lost your daughter and there's nothing you can do about that. But now you might lose your son.

• [Claudia knocks the door of Julia's room, gets in, and sees her brushing her hair] 

  Claudia Salinger : Are you gonna see Griffin today?

  Julia Salinger : If they let me.

  [she turns around] 

  Claudia Salinger : So he could go to jail, huh?

  Julia Salinger : I hope not. Maybe.

  Claudia Salinger : I really don't get it, Jule. I mean, why would he do this? Why would he steal from us?

  Julia Salinger : I don't know.

  Claudia Salinger : But doesn't it make you mad? Why aren't you mad at him, Julia? I'm mad at him.

  Julia Salinger : I don't know. I'm not sure. Sometimes people do stupid things. You know, like, when they feel really bad about themselves, and you just... You have to try and understand.

  Claudia Salinger : Okay. There's no way I can go with you. Right?

  Julia Salinger : I'm sorry.
