We Gather Together (#6.7)
ComedyFan201012 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Julia meets the son of Evan whom he has trouble with. Charlie works out his problem with Myra's mother. Claudia decides not to report the guy who attacked her. And they have a Thanksgiving dinner.

Charlie's story continued really well. I liked all the interactions, conflicts and him wondering if he should resign. And it ended the way it should.

The story about Evan's son also started pretty good. But I didn't like how it ended. I don't believe he would be in any way happy or impressed that some student his age was coaching his dad on how to act against him.

It was also interesting to see Claudia struggle with the attack. I somehow feel the story isn't over even if for now she understandably decided not to report.

Troubles to Overcome
tomasmmc-771983 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Troubles follow Claudia, Charlie and Kirsten. Claudia, after Derek reaches her in school to apologize (he heard that she has been calling in sick, being absent from school several days), decides to reveal the assault to Julia and Alexa. The scene with Julia was sad, and she says that Claudia should accuse Derek to the school and his parents. But Alexa says the opposite, because she will be the target and famous in the school, and not for good reasons. Finally, Claudia takes Alexa's advice, she doesn't want to be the center of attention, with the school talking about her. This story was really good, despite some mistake in Alexa's lines ("you would ruin his life"), Claudia took a decision, probably not popular in these modern times, but is how she feels. She wants to be invisible, there's no problem with that. She is a good person, who prefers suffer in solitude than debate openly about her feelings. Anyway, Derek deserved some punishment or retaliation, if Charlie or Bailey ever learned what he did to Claudia, they could have done something.

In the other great story of the day, Charlie considers resigning from school after the accusation, as the principal, Mary Ann (surely the sucessor of Stickley), doesn't want the case to be public, and asks him to take the deal Mrs Wringler is offering. At home, while cooking some salad, an upset Kirsten says he must fight because he is innocent (his first natural reaction too), even though he could use the severance money and the hours to work more in the factory. She doesn't care about the money, and is upset also because the school is not defending him, so he says the stress might not be good for her if she is pregnant (the doctor said), they can't risk the baby. Then, Charlie arrives 20 minutes late to the meeting at the school, saying that he drop off his wife at work (he said they share the truck). With a lawyer present, Mrs Wringler forces him to apologize in the deal, so he yells at her for lying in the accusation and for ignoring Myra in the last 10 years. Mary Ann intervenes and tells him that he should have handled things different with Myra when he learned her hard situation in late october. He reluctantly accepts it, but refuses to sign a deal yet. In their second scene, Kirsten arrives home, goes saddened to sit on the bed and tells him that she felt cramping, so she went to the doctor and the tests showed a low positive for pregnancy. He holds her while she is saddened and in tears, because she was pregnant, but not now. She says that in part she feels bad and wants to blame Myra's mother for what she did to him, but in part she would like to be happy because for a minute she was actually pregnant. This means that the embryo was implanted correctly, but it couldn't progress. The IVF is not easy and there are risks, stressful situations and the turn outs can have a negative influence. And probably that's why Charlie thought it would be hard for Kirsten, he doesn't want to see her suffering, but at the same time, she will suffer if she never gets to have a child of her own. After Daphne's return in Haunted, it's like she lost the connection, the maternal feeling she had with Diana. She can take care of her, but with Daphne present, it's not the same than before. So that's why Kirsten is trying so hard to get pregnant, she needs to hold her own baby and feel, know she's the real mother. Back to the story, after buying food and groceries, Charlie talks to Claudia about Myra's issue because it's her school too, and she is surprised that now he wants to fight the case in court, even if the people learn the accusations. He says that the truth has to mean something, in other words, the truth shall prevail. Later, while having Thanksgiving in the house with the rest of the family, Myra visits and asks Charlie help one last time because if the case goes to court, her mother would obviously lose and they might be split up, considering the neglect. She also said that she told the truth to her mother but she didn't listen. Charlie returns to the table and sits next to his beloved wife. The next day, he tells Mrs Wringler that Myra visited him one more time for help and convinces her to listen and take care of her daughter. Finally, she drops out the charges, and Charlie and his wife go to have dinner to "celebrate" that she got pregnant for a time, meaning that she will be again. He wants to try again IVF, but given that was hard, she wants to wait, and have their normal life, "practice the old fashion way" without the IVF stuff for a few weeks. He laughs, she smiles and they happily kiss. That scene, which was great and nice, ends with them waiting to enter a restaurant he likes, with that true happiness in their faces absent in the last seasons. They are happily married and are enjoying every moment together. This story was great because it ended well, with justice, and showed their deep happiness, despite the first unsuccesful try of IVF. After the past three seasons, each scene of them together and happy is kind of a blessing. Besides, once again was showed how much they love each other, she supporting him at the point of taking risks for the IVF, only to fight for his innocence, and he comforting her in sorrow for not being pregnant, and prioritizing her/their dreams of their baby, instead of the problems the school. Also, the themes treated can be common for people their age. A happy married couple dealing with IVF and accusations of abuse, it's hard for both of them, but they are good persons who suffered a lot, and they came out alright. To finish this part, I have to praise Matthew's job here, he seemed really compromised with the storyline of the accusation. Paula was great too, portraying the supportive and loving wife Charlie has. Frankly, they are being the best of season 6.

As for the other stories, are less interesting. Bailey decides to stop seeing Tracy, because she is married, even when she tells him that her husband is cheating on her and spending Thanksgiving in London with his secretary. But Will gives Bailey the wrong advice of living wild like a 20 year old guy, so he finally goes to Tracy's place after Thanksgiving dinner and the next day, goes in a double date with Will and ring girls. Also, he schedules another encounter with Tracy the same night. About this, Bailey is lost, without doubt, and Will can't stop himself from giving him wrong advices. Poor Owen, all what Bailey did in season 5 for him, and now he abandons him. I keep thinking, he should be living with his adoptive parents, the two persons who raised him since he was 1 year old. Meanwhile, Julia meets Brian, Evan's son, who puts her in line, she is half Evan's age, and can't pretend that they are a family by wanting them to spend Thanksgiving with the Salingers. At one moment, Charlie almost meets Evan, and is surprised to see that he has a son, but keeps his words for himself, probably resigned to Julia's wrong choices for guys. Fortunately, Brian runs away from the house, so Evan must chase him, and both of them are absent at dinner. In the last scene, Brian executes his plan of breaking up Julia and Evan, so he kisses her. On the other hand, Griffin and Daphne get drunk and become a couple, with Victor's help (what a waste from the writers, it can't and won't last). This part was totally pointless and to skip. Diana had a brief appearance in the dinner, so if Daphne is busy with Griffin, her caring for now it's up to Charlie, Kirsten and some babysitter they hired for the occasion. The Thanksgiving dinner was a happy moment overall, but it's also true that there were too many persons there. According to season 5 finale, Griffin shouldn't be there (I still don't know why he was a regular this season), Will was pretty absent last seasons, so it's a little strange his presence (he has his own family), Victor was kind of a guest (I don't remember Bill, the 4th nanny of season 1, in family dinners). I don't want to be rude, but the true Salingers are the seven family members, Joe as the "uncle" and Daphne for now, as she is alone with no other family, and is Diana's mother.
