Quotes

Charlie Salinger : [to Claudia] You eat way too much sugar. That's the whole problem.
Claudia Salinger : I do not!
Charlie Salinger : Yes, you do! Why don't you have a nice piece of fruit when you get home from school?
Claudia Salinger : Why don't you get a haircut?
Charlie Salinger : I'm serious, Claud. When was the last time you had a vegetable?
Claudia Salinger : When was the last time you put down the toilet seat?
-
Charlie Salinger : [about the party Claudia threw at the house] I thought I said...
Claudia Salinger : You said I was grounded, that I couldn't go out. Well, I didn't go out. I brought everyone in.
-
Charlie Salinger : [to Claudia] You are not doing this to me anymore, have you got that? When I tell you to do something, you say "Yes, Charlie," "Thank you, Charlie" and you do it! You obey me and you treat me with respect or I swear to God...
Claudia Salinger : What? What are you gonna do? What are you gonna take away from me next?
Charlie Salinger : That is not what's going on!
Claudia Salinger : And in front of all my friends? Forget it! Why do you get to boss me around?
Charlie Salinger : Cut it out, Claudia!
Claudia Salinger : You never listen to a thing I say!
Charlie Salinger : I don't wanna hear this...
Claudia Salinger : Why do I have to listen to you?
Charlie Salinger : Because I am the father around here!
Claudia Salinger : I don't care!
Charlie Salinger : God!
[raises his hand to hit Claudia, but he quickly stops himself]
Claudia Salinger : Some father.
[Claudia quits the room while Charlie remains distressed and scared]
-
Claudia Salinger : [to Charlie] I'm eating an apple.
Charlie Salinger : [doesn't look up] Yeah, well, good for you.
Claudia Salinger : It's really delicious. I'm really enjoying it. I'm going to be eating lots of them from now on. Broccoli too.
Charlie Salinger : Have you seen the checkbook?
Claudia Salinger : I'm sorry, Charlie.
Charlie Salinger : Yeah, well, just help me look for it.
Claudia Salinger : No, I mean... I'm sorry about before. You know, with the sleepover. You got so mad, I didn't think it would make you that mad. You almost hit me...
Charlie Salinger : I don't want to talk about that, OK?
Claudia Salinger : But I...
Charlie Salinger : OK?

[last lines]
[Charlie enters the house]
Kirsten Bennett : Hey, sweetie. We're just going to read Owen a bedtime story.
[Owen gurgling]
Kirsten Bennett : Charlie?
Bailey Salinger : What's with you, man?
Claudia Salinger : Are you okay?
Julia Salinger : Did something happen?
Charlie Salinger : I just... I can't do this anymore.
Claudia Salinger : Do what?
Bailey Salinger : What are you talking about?
Charlie Salinger : [to Bailey] You gave Bill his raise, huh? Even though I told you
Bailey Salinger : Yeah, yeah, I just figured
Charlie Salinger : Well, I don't want to hear about it, okay? I'm just... Bottom line, I am just sick of being second-guessed. And I am sick of being undercut, like it's just assumed whatever I do is wrong.
[to Bailey]
Charlie Salinger : Like you never made a bad choice.
Bailey Salinger : Okay, I'm sorry. I didn't... Look, if that's it
Charlie Salinger : That's not it. That's not even close to being it. It's like I don't even have the authority to make a single decision and have everyone say, "Okay. That's the way it's gonna be because Charlie said so."
Claudia Salinger : Is this all because of the sleepover?
Charlie Salinger : No. It's like... What's yours is yours, and what's mine is yours. I don't have anything that is just mine. Not the money that I make, not the right to take a job.
Julia Salinger : This is about Seattle.
Charlie Salinger : [sighs] It's all of it. It's everything. Everything is a fight. Nothing's easy. You won't let me make decisions, and you won't let me make the rules. You... You won't even let me make mistakes. And I... I... I can't keep doing this, and then know that you don't even appreciate it. You don't even respect me.
Julia Salinger : Charlie, I swear we do.
Charlie Salinger : [sighs] And then I get angry and... I do things, Claud... that... I don't mean to do. And that really scares me. I mean, that makes me think I got to get away.
[to Kirsten]
Charlie Salinger : And not just for a four-day weekend or a week. I mean, really away.
[to Claudia]
Charlie Salinger : 'Cause if I ever actually hit you...
Claudia Salinger : Charlie, you didn't hit me. Just forget about it.
Charlie Salinger : No.
Julia Salinger : Charlie...
Charlie Salinger : You need me to be a man, but... You won't let me be one. And... I have to have something that's just mine, something that I don't have to fight for... or beg for.
[sighs]
Charlie Salinger : And I... I can't breathe here anymore. So... I'm getting my own place. I'm moving out.
