- The boys are back. Every status is quo. Except: Summer won't kiss and make up. Ryan catches Marissa in a clinch, the DA busts Caleb, Hailey bails and the re-modelers are like a wrecking crew. Home sweet chaos.
- Ryan and Seth return to Newport and have their first day back at Harbor High School. Seth runs into Summer, who will not forgive him for running way and not calling her, and she shows off her new boyfriend Zach; a WASP-version of Seth whom they first meet at Seth's new comic book club. Ryan catches Marissa in a clinch and her tryst with the new gardener D.J. Meanwhile, Caleb calls upon Sandy for help when he's arrested for bribery charges. Sandy and Kirsten deal with their re-modelers whom are like a wrecking crew. Also, Hailey decides to leave town for a job offer in Japan and has an emotional goodbye with Jimmy, now living aboard a sailboat in the Newport marina.—The OC, Season 2 boxset
- Seth tries to convince Ryan to stay home from the first day of school, so as to avoid having to see Summer, the person, who he has yet to talk to since being back in Newport. Ryan tells Seth just to apologize, before Seth drags it out that he has yet to talk to Marissa either. The re-modeling continues to invade the Cohen household, and the re-modelers continue to get in everyone's way. Archie, the head re-modeler, agrees to take Seth and Ryan to school via the back of his truck, as Sandy and Kirsten both have to leave early to get to work. Upon hopping out of the back of Archie's truck, Seth and Ryan immediately lay their eyes upon Marissa and Summer. Marissa runs up to Ryan to hug him, as Summer walks away, completely avoiding Seth. Seth catches up with Summer, she talks to him just long enough to tell him she has a ew "boyfriend." Hailey, Kirsten's sister and Jimmy's new girlfriend, learns of a great job opportunity-in Japan. She jumps at the chance to take the job, as it may lead to a new, amazing career for her, despite her having to leave Jimmy to live on his yacht alone. Ryan gets his new schedule from the guidance counselor at Harbor High, but she pushes him to choose classes more suitable for him, and classes that will best prepare him for college. She gives him an assignment, to take a small notebook and write down everything he likes about his classes, everything he doesn't like, and why. Still at school, Seth decides to start a Comic Book Club at school, and asks Ryan to pass out fliers for him. Summer takes Marissa back to her house to pick up her car, and they see DJ, the Cooper-Nichol household's yard guy doing some hedge work along the driveway. It is then revealed that DJ and Marissa have been an item all summer, as the two kiss and make-out in her bedroom. Marissa spikes her Latte at school, and Summer learns about her summer-long tryst with DJ. Elsewhere, Seth and Ryan commence the first Comic Book Club meeting, only to be joined by Zack, a water polo player. Seth immediately strikes up a friendship with Zack over there shared love of comic books, up until Seth finds out that it is Zack that is Summer's new boyfriend. Seth is outraged that Summer is dating the water-polo-playing version of him. Later, Caleb tells Sandy that the D.A. has finally come up with enough evidence to charge him with bribing certain city officials. Sandy has to tell Julie that Caleb will be indicted, and she warns Sandy that he had better figure out a way to save Cal, or it won't be just her kids that will be left with nothing. Back in the Cohen household, Ryan gets bored and begins drawing architecture sketches of the Cohen's family room and kitchen, and realizes why it is that Archie and his crew are taking so long to finish the job. It's the sketches Ryan drew that help his guidance counselor to realize that being in some advanced math and science classes are what are going to help him be excepted to a college where he can major in architecture. Harbor's annual Kick Off Carnival is just around the corner, and Seth is dateless, Summer is going with Zack, and Ryan has asked Marissa to go. That was until he sees her kissing DJ in her driveway as he was pulling in. He confronts her at the carnival, but she feels she has done nothing wrong. Meanwhile at the carnival, Seth tries to climb on top of a hot dog stand as another grand romantic gesture to win Summer back. His plan fails, and in a later confrontation Summer tells Seth he doesn't like her, he likes the chase, and says at that point, there's nothing he can do to win her. He had his chance, he sailed away, and he lost her. But Seth is determined, and he refuses to let go. The lads return back to the Cohen house, where Kirsten, Caleb, and Sandy are eating Chinese takeout, just as the D.A. shows up to finally arrest Caleb.—Manda Clark
