- Joel is examining Shelly for the progress of her pregnancy. Part of the exam is the drawing of a blood sample. Shelly, back at her waitress duties, is floored when Wayne, a boy out of her past, walks into the restaurant. He casually explains his presence: He wants to marry Cindy, but he cannot do it until he and Shelly are divorced. It seems an old judge performed a wedding in Saskatchewan for Wayne and Shelly after a hockey game following a couple of beers. Now it is Holling's turn to be flabbergasted. He is so shocked that he declares he's moving out until the divorce is final. He does not want to be living with a married woman. Meanwhile, Joel finds a suspicious growth on Rick's chest. He advises a biopsy to rule out that it is malignant. This sets Rick off thinking that he will be the next in the series of Maggie boyfriends who die of the O'Connell Curse. He runs off to Fairbanks to distance himself from her. Shelly's blood test results indicate that she is not actually pregnant; it is a "hysterical" pregnancy. Now, Wayne starts thinking about how it wouldn't be so bad to stay married to Shelly and have a baby with her. After all, she is prettier than Cindy. Now Shelly is confused. While she and Wayne dance closely, Holling gets a severe crick in his neck. As Joel treats Holling, he advises that he take Shelly back. Shelly finally decides to send Wayne away and apologizes to Holling. He accepts. Ed suffers from writer's block in attempting to write a screenplay for a movie he hopes to make. He fantasizes various scenarios as he watches his friends interact. For example, Joel and Maurice mimic a scene from "Midnight Cowboy". Joel tells him to take inspiration from everyday life, not blockbusters. Rick's biopsy comes back negative, so he and Maggie can continue their relationship. Joel asks Maggie to the Indian talent show where they watch Marilyn dance.—Garon Smith
- Holling learns his waitress and soon-to-be fiancée, Shelly, is married already. Her Canadian husband, ice hockey-player Wayne Jones (20), turns up, eager for a divorce so he can wed another - or make their own marriage work. She has a hysterical 'pregnancy'. Joel finds a probably benign melanoma on Maggie's friend, Rick Pederson, who fears he will become the next of her dying spouses. Joel encourages Ed to keep working on his Hollywood script, taking inspiration from real life rather then blockbusters. Female love proves even scarcer then previously appeared.—KGF Vissers
